Chapter 14: The Child Who Came Before Maya

The address led to a residential property outside the city.

Laura refused to let me drive there alone.

She contacted the appropriate authorities and explained the information we had discovered.

By midnight, we had confirmation that the address was associated with a former private care provider.

The business had closed eight months earlier.

But the property was still registered to a company connected to Bright Path.

At 7:15 the next morning, Laura called.

"Daniel, I have something.""

I sat up.

"What?""

"MW-16.""

My heart began pounding.

"Who is it?""

"A child whose placement was previously arranged through the same network.""

"Where is the child now?""

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

I rubbed my face.

"Was the child removed from their parents?""

Laura hesitated.

"According to the records, the placement was described as voluntary.""

I closed my eyes.

The same word.

Voluntary.

The same word Vanessa had used in my documents.

"Can we speak to the family?""

"Possibly. There's a woman named Karen Mitchell who appears in the records as the child's mother. I've made contact.""

"What's she saying?""

"She wants to speak with you.""

An hour later, I was sitting in Laura's office.

Karen Mitchell arrived carrying a large handbag and wearing a worn brown jacket.

She looked exhausted.

Her hands trembled as she sat down.

"You're Daniel?""

"Yes.""

She looked at Laura.

"Is this about Vanessa Carter?""

I nodded.

Karen closed her eyes.

"I knew it.""

I leaned forward.

"What happened?""

She took a photograph from her handbag.

It showed a little boy, perhaps eight years old, standing beside a Christmas tree.

"His name is Noah.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Is he MW-16?""

Karen nodded.

"That's what they called him.""

I felt sick.

"They gave him a case number?""

"Yes. Everything was a case number. Nobody used his name when they thought I wasn't listening.""

She placed the photograph on the desk.

"Noah was living with me after his father died. I was working two jobs, and I was struggling. A woman from Bright Path contacted me.""

Laura listened carefully.

"What did she offer?""

"Help. Counseling. Financial assistance. A temporary family arrangement while I got back on my feet.""

Karen laughed bitterly.

"They told me it would be three months.""

I looked at her.

"What happened?""

"They took him to stay with a family who could provide better opportunities.""

"Did you sign?""

She nodded.

"They told me it was temporary.""

Her voice broke.

"Then they stopped answering my calls.""

I stared at her.

"How long was he gone?""

"Seven months.""

"Seven months?""

She wiped her eyes.

"I called the police. I contacted lawyers. I went to their office. Everyone told me it was a private family arrangement.""

Laura leaned forward.

"Did you eventually get him back?""

Karen nodded slowly.

"After I found out the paperwork wasn't what they'd told me.""

She opened her handbag and removed several documents.

One was a copy of her original agreement.

Another was a letter from Bright Path.

The letter stated that Noah's placement had been extended because his mother had allegedly failed to demonstrate sufficient stability.

I read the paragraph twice.

It was almost identical to the language in Maya's application.

"Who was the family?"" I asked.

Karen looked at me.

"The Whitmores.""

My stomach dropped.

"Greg and Patricia?""

She nodded.

"Patricia told everyone she was helping a child in need.""

Karen took another breath.

"But she never intended to return him.""

Laura examined the documents.

"How did you eventually get Noah back?""

"I found a woman who used to work for them. She gave me copies of internal emails. They showed that Bright Path had been discussing permanent guardianship before I signed the temporary agreement.""

I leaned forward.

"Do you still have those emails?""

Karen nodded.

"I gave copies to my lawyer.""

"Can we get them?""

"Yes.""

She looked directly at me.

"Daniel, don't let them take your little girl.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"I won't.""

Karen reached across the table and held my hand.

"They'll tell you it's for her own good. They'll tell you you're selfish. They'll say you're unstable. They'll make you feel like you're the problem.""

She paused.

"That's exactly what they did to me.""

Laura asked whether Karen would be willing to provide a formal statement.

Karen nodded.

"Absolutely.""

Then she looked at me again.

"There's something else.""

I waited.

"Patricia didn't want Noah because she couldn't have children.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

Karen glanced at Laura.

"She told me she wanted to raise a child who would eventually become part of her family's charitable foundation.""

I stared at her.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Karen opened another document.

It was an email from Patricia to someone at Bright Path.

The subject line read:

*Long-Term Family Integration.*

The message discussed selecting children whose family circumstances made temporary placements easier to arrange.

There was a reference to financial planning, education trusts, and future guardianship.

Laura read it carefully.

"Do you know whether this email was authenticated?""

"My lawyer obtained it from a former employee.""

Laura nodded.

"We'll need to verify the original records.""

Karen looked at me.

"Your daughter's trust makes her especially valuable to them.""

I felt cold.

"How do you know about the trust?""

"Because Noah's case involved money too. They wanted access to funds held in his grandmother's name.""

I looked at Laura.

She had gone completely still.

Then Karen said:

"They called it a transition contribution.""

Laura closed the folder.

"Daniel, we need to preserve this information and provide it to the appropriate investigators.""

I nodded.

Before Karen left, she gave me a number.

"That's the former employee who helped me.""

I called it from the parking lot.

A man answered.

"Hello?""

"My name is Daniel Carter. Karen Mitchell gave me your number.""

He was silent.

Then he asked:

"Is this about the little girl?""

I looked at Laura.

"Yes.""

He lowered his voice.

"Then you need to know that Vanessa wasn't the person who started this.""

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?""

"The Whitmores had been looking for another child before Vanessa ever contacted them.""

"Who contacted her?""

The man hesitated.

Then he said:

"Someone from your own family.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Who?""

He took a breath.

"Your wife's mother.""

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa's mother, Margaret, had visited our house countless times.

She had brought birthday presents.

She had babysat Maya.

She had even told me once that she considered Maya her own granddaughter.

"Why would Margaret be involved?""

The man replied:

"Because she's connected to the company that funds the placements.""

I stared at Laura.

She mouthed one word.

"Proof?""

I asked the man.

"Do you have evidence?""

"Yes. But I need to meet you somewhere safe.""

"Where?""

He gave me an address.

Then he added:

"Bring your lawyer. And don't tell Vanessa.""

The call ended.

I sat in the car, unable to move.

For months, I'd believed Vanessa was acting alone.

Now it appeared her mother had helped build the entire arrangement.

May you like

And if that was true, there was another question I couldn't ignore.

How much had Margaret known about what was happening to Maya?
