Chapter 9: The Stranger Who Knew Everything
The message came from a number neither of us recognized.
My father tried calling immediately.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
The silence after each failed attempt felt unbearable.
Because whoever sent that message knew exactly what they were doing.
They weren't trying to scare us.
They were trying to reveal something.
Slowly.
Piece by piece.
"Dad, who could this be?""
He didn't answer.
His eyes stayed on the photograph.
Karen standing outside my school counselor's office.
The date was visible.
Three years ago.
The same year I applied for the scholarship.
The same year everything started falling apart.
My father stood up.
"We need to talk to Karen.""
I followed him.
But before we reached the living room, we heard voices.
Mia and Karen.
They were arguing.
"You promised me this would never come out.""
Mia's voice.
My father stopped.
I stopped too.
Karen lowered her voice.
"You need to calm down.""
"No.""
Mia sounded terrified.
"You said nobody would find out.""
My heart started pounding.
Nobody would find out?
About what?
My father opened the door.
Both of them immediately went silent.
Karen looked shocked.
Mia looked guilty.
My father held up his phone.
"Explain.""
Karen's face changed.
"I don't know what this is.""
He stepped forward.
"Don't lie to me.""
"I am not lying.""
Mia looked between us.
"Dad...""
My father looked at her.
"How much do you know?""
She didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I felt something break inside me.
Because even after everything...
she still knew more than she admitted.
"Mia.""
She looked at me.
"I'm sorry.""
Those words meant nothing anymore.
Not because I didn't want forgiveness.
Because I wanted honesty first.
"Tell me.""
She looked at Karen.
Karen shook her head.
"Mia.""
"No.""
My stepsister wiped her eyes.
"I'm tired.""
Everyone became silent.
"I'm tired of pretending.""
Karen looked angry.
"Don't do this.""
Mia ignored her.
"I knew.""
My heart sank.
"Knew what?""
She looked at me.
"About the scholarship.""
I felt dizzy.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"I knew Mom talked to your counselor.""
My father stared.
"Why?""
Mia started crying.
"Because she wanted me to have a better chance.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"By ruining mine?""
Mia looked down.
"She said you already had Dad.""
That sentence destroyed something inside me.
Because it explained everything.
This wasn't about my achievements.
This wasn't about my dress.
This was about a belief that had been planted years ago.
That if I succeeded, Mia lost.
My father looked at Karen.
"Is this true?""
Karen remained silent.
Then she said something unexpected.
"Yes.""
The room froze.
I almost couldn't breathe.
She admitted it.
After all the lies.
After all the excuses.
She admitted it.
"I thought I was protecting my daughter.""
My father looked disgusted.
"You sabotaged a child.""
"I made one mistake.""
I shook my head.
"One?""
My voice cracked.
"How many things did you ruin?""
Karen looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw something.
Not guilt.
Regret.
But it came too late.
"I was afraid.""
I stared at her.
"Afraid of what?""
She whispered:
"That Mia would always come second.""
My father stepped closer.
"And you decided my daughter should suffer instead?""
Karen had no answer.
Mia started crying harder.
"I didn't know it would become this bad.""
I looked at her.
"You cut my dress.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
"You deleted my email.""
"I know.""
"You watched me blame myself.""
Her tears fell.
"I know.""
The room became silent.
Then my father said:
"Both of you need to understand something.""
His voice was calm.
But final.
"You are not being punished because you made mistakes.""
He looked at Karen.
"You are facing consequences because you chose cruelty.""
Then he looked at Mia.
"And because you chose silence.""
Nobody spoke.
That night, everything changed.
Karen packed a bag.
Mia locked herself in her room.
And I sat downstairs with my father, staring at a family photo on the wall.
A photo taken years ago.
A photo where everyone was smiling.
Back then, I thought it represented happiness.
Now I realized something.
A picture could capture a moment.
But it couldn't reveal the truth behind it.
And somewhere in this house...
there were still secrets we hadn't uncovered.
Because the next morning, my father received a letter.
May you like
A letter that would reveal the one thing Karen had been hiding from everyone.
Including Mia.
