Chapter 18: The Truth My Mother Took to Her Grave

Rebecca invited us inside.

But she didn't sit down.

She paced.

Like someone who had spent years waiting for this moment.

"I should have told you sooner.""

My father looked at her.

"Then why didn't you?""

Rebecca looked at me.

"Because your mother made me promise.""

I almost laughed.

Another promise.

Another secret.

Another person deciding what I could handle.

But before I could speak, Rebecca continued.

"She thought keeping you safe mattered more than being honest.""

I looked away.

"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.""

Rebecca's face softened.

"I know.""

"Do you?""

She nodded.

"Because your mother hated that.""

That surprised me.

"What?""

"She told me that one day you would grow up and everyone would realize they made decisions for you instead of trusting you.""

My throat tightened.

Because that sounded exactly like my life.

Rebecca sat down.

"Your mother discovered something before she died.""

My father leaned forward.

"What?""

"Karen wasn't acting alone.""

The room became silent.

I looked at my father.

"So who was helping her?""

Rebecca hesitated.

Then she said:

"Someone in your father's family.""

My heart stopped.

"My father's family?""

She nodded.

"Someone who benefited if your father lost control of everything.""

My father looked confused.

"I don't understand.""

Rebecca opened her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

Inside were documents.

"I kept these because I promised your mother.""

My father opened them.

His face changed.

I looked over his shoulder.

The documents were about inheritance.

Money.

Ownership.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

My father's older brother.

Richard.

I had heard of him.

But barely.

He lived far away.

Rarely visited.

Always busy.

"Richard?""

My father whispered.

Rebecca nodded.

"Your mother believed he was working with Karen.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard wanted access to the family assets.""

My father looked shocked.

"But he never showed interest.""

Rebecca gave a sad smile.

"That's because people don't always show their true intentions when they are waiting.""

I felt sick.

All these years, we thought the enemy was outside.

But the danger had been closer than anyone realized.

My father kept reading.

Then he stopped.

"What is this?""

Rebecca looked at him.

"The final piece.""

He held up a document.

A transfer agreement.

A signature.

My father's face went pale.

"That's impossible.""

"What?""

He looked at me.

"This signature...""

He couldn't finish.

Rebecca said quietly:

"It was signed the night before your mother's accident.""

My heart pounded.

"Signed by who?""

My father looked at the paper.

Then whispered:

"Me.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

He looked horrified.

"I never signed this.""

Rebecca nodded.

"Your mother knew.""

I stared.

"Someone forged his signature?""

Rebecca looked at me.

"Yes.""

My father stood suddenly.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Rebecca's eyes filled with sadness.

"Because she was trying to find proof.""

"And then?""

Rebecca looked down.

"Then she never got the chance.""

Nobody spoke.

The truth was becoming clearer.

Karen.

Daniel.

Richard.

A plan that had started years ago.

A plan that almost destroyed my family.

Then Rebecca reached into the folder and pulled out one final item.

A photograph.

She placed it on the table.

I looked at it.

And my blood ran cold.

Because the photograph showed three people.

Karen.

Daniel.

And someone else.

Someone I never expected.

Someone who had been pretending to help us from the beginning.

My father stared at the picture.

Then whispered:

"No...""

May you like

Because the person standing beside them...

was someone we trusted completely.
