Chapter 16: The Person We Never Suspected

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

The message stayed on my phone screen.

Three sentences.

Three lines that completely changed the way we looked at everything.

*You are looking in the wrong direction.*

*Your mother wasn't trying to expose Karen.*

*She was trying to expose someone else.*

I read them again and again, hoping they would somehow make more sense.

But they didn't.

Because every answer we thought we had suddenly became another question.

My father took the phone from my hand.

"Who sent this?""

"I don't know.""

He stared at the number.

"Call it.""

I did.

Nothing.

The call went straight to voicemail.

No name.

No recording.

Nothing.

My father placed the phone down.

"We need to stop reacting.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

"It means whoever is sending these messages wants us emotional.""

He looked at the hidden documents scattered across the table.

"They want us focused on certain things.""

I understood what he meant.

Karen.

Daniel.

The money.

The lies.

Maybe those were all pieces of the story.

But not the whole story.

Mia sat quietly.

For once, she wasn't trying to defend herself.

She wasn't angry.

She looked scared.

"Dad?""

He looked at her.

"What?""

"There is something else.""

My stomach tightened.

"Something else?""

She nodded.

"I didn't tell you because I thought it didn't matter.""

My father leaned forward.

"Mia.""

She looked down.

"Before Mom left the house the last time...""

She stopped.

"She gave me something.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What?""

Mia stood and walked upstairs.

Nobody spoke while she was gone.

When she came back, she was holding a small box.

Old.

Damaged.

She placed it on the table.

"I kept it hidden.""

My father opened it.

Inside was a bracelet.

My mother's bracelet.

I recognized it immediately.

She wore it every day.

My father touched it carefully.

"Where did you get this?""

Mia swallowed.

"She gave it to me.""

"When?""

"The day before the accident.""

The room became silent.

My father looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

"Because she told me not to.""

My father frowned.

"Why?""

Mia looked at the bracelet.

"She said if something happened, this would only be safe if nobody knew about it.""

My father picked it up.

"Did you open it?""

Mia shook her head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because I was scared.""

That answer surprised me.

Because Mia always seemed fearless.

But now I saw something different.

A scared child who had been carrying a secret for years.

My father examined the bracelet.

Then he noticed something.

A tiny opening.

He pressed it.

A small compartment appeared.

Inside was a piece of paper.

Folded carefully.

My hands shook as my father unfolded it.

There was only one sentence.

*"The person you trust most is the person you should question first.""*

Nobody breathed.

My father stared at the words.

Then slowly looked around the room.

I felt a chill.

Because that sentence didn't point to Karen.

It didn't point to Daniel.

It pointed closer.

Much closer.

My father stood.

"No.""

His voice was barely above a whisper.

I looked at him.

"Dad?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"What?""

He looked at the note again.

Then at the family photos on the wall.

"Your mother didn't mean Karen.""

My heart stopped.

"Then who?""

He didn't answer.

And that terrified me.

Because my father was afraid.

Not confused.

Afraid.

Mia noticed too.

"Dad...""

He sat down.

"There is someone else.""

"Who?""

He looked at me.

And for a moment, I thought he would say a name.

But instead, he said:

"Someone who has been helping us.""

My blood went cold.

Helping us?

Someone close enough to know everything.

Someone who had access.

Someone who knew where the hidden room was.

Someone who knew we found the evidence.

My father grabbed the old documents again.

"We need to find out who had access to your mother's files after she died.""

Mia looked confused.

"Why?""

"Because someone removed things.""

"What things?""

My father looked at the missing pages.

"The pages that could have exposed the truth.""

I stared.

"So someone has been hiding this all along?""

He nodded.

"And that person may have been right in front of us.""

That night, I couldn't sleep.

Too many memories came back.

Every person who had comforted me.

Every person who had told me they were helping.

What if one of them was lying?

May you like

What if the person I trusted most...

was the person my mother warned me about?
