Chapter 20: The Friend Who Betrayed My Father

Finding Mark wasn't difficult.

That was the most frightening part.

Someone like him should have been difficult to locate.

Someone hiding a secret should have disappeared.

But Mark didn't.

He was still living the same life.

Still working.

Still attending events.

Still smiling in photographs.

Like nothing had happened.

Like he hadn't spent years standing beside my father while hiding the truth.

My father found him at a restaurant where he often met business partners.

We didn't confront him immediately.

We watched.

And that was when I understood something.

People who are guilty don't always look guilty.

Mark looked normal.

He laughed.

He shook hands.

He acted like a good person.

And maybe that was the most dangerous kind.

Someone who knew exactly how to appear innocent.

My father finally walked inside.

I followed.

Mark saw him.

His smile appeared instantly.

"Thomas.""

Then he saw me.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

"You brought your daughter.""

My father sat down.

"We need to talk.""

Mark laughed.

"That sounds serious.""

"It is.""

The smile disappeared.

My father placed the photograph on the table.

Mark looked at it.

And everything changed.

Not dramatically.

Not like in movies.

Just a small movement.

A pause.

A tiny moment where his confidence disappeared.

Then it returned.

"I don't know what this is.""

My father stared at him.

"You expect me to believe that?""

Mark sighed.

"Thomas, think carefully.""

That sentence bothered me.

Because it sounded like a warning.

Not a defense.

My father leaned forward.

"You worked with Karen.""

"No.""

"You knew Daniel.""

"No.""

"You helped hide information from me.""

Mark looked at me.

Then back at my father.

"Who told you this?""

Nobody answered.

His eyes narrowed.

That was enough.

He knew.

My father noticed too.

"You didn't ask what information.""

Silence.

"You already knew what we were talking about.""

Mark looked away.

For the first time, he looked old.

Tired.

"Thomas...""

"No.""

My father's voice was cold.

"I want the truth.""

Mark sighed.

"I was trying to protect you.""

I almost laughed.

Another person.

Another excuse.

Everyone who hurt us claimed they were protecting us.

"By lying?""

My voice made Mark look at me.

"You don't understand.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I pointed at him.

"You don't understand.""

He became quiet.

"Do you know what it feels like to spend years believing you weren't enough?""

My voice cracked.

"To think you were the reason people left?""

Mark looked uncomfortable.

I continued.

"While people around you were secretly destroying your life?""

My father touched my shoulder.

Not to stop me.

To support me.

Mark looked down.

"I made mistakes.""

My father laughed bitterly.

"Mistakes?""

"You don't know the whole story.""

"Then tell me.""

Mark stayed silent.

That silence was the answer.

Finally, he said:

"Karen came to me years ago.""

My father's expression hardened.

"Why?""

"She was desperate.""

"For what?""

Mark looked away.

"Security.""

I felt sick.

"Money.""

He didn't deny it.

"She said she wanted a better life for Mia.""

My father shook his head.

"So she destroyed mine?""

Mark closed his eyes.

"I didn't know how far she would go.""

"But you helped.""

Another silence.

Then Mark reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small object.

A flash drive.

My heart stopped.

"What is that?""

Mark looked at me.

"The video.""

Nobody moved.

"The one your mother recorded.""

My father's eyes widened.

"You had it?""

Mark nodded.

"For years.""

"Why?""

He looked ashamed.

"Because I was afraid.""

My father stood.

"You let me believe she died without knowing the truth.""

Mark looked broken.

"I thought I could fix it.""

My father stared.

"You don't fix betrayal by hiding it.""

Mark handed over the flash drive.

"I know.""

My father took it.

But before we left, Mark said one thing.

Something that made all of us stop.

"You're still missing something.""

My father turned.

"What?""

Mark looked at me.

"Your mother wasn't only investigating Karen.""

My heart tightened.

"Then who?""

Mark swallowed.

"She was investigating me.""

The room went silent.

"What does that mean?""

Mark looked terrified.

"It means Karen wasn't the first person who betrayed your family.""

My father stared.

"Who was?""

May you like

Mark whispered:

"Someone your mother trusted before anyone else.""
