Chapter 21: My Mother's Final Recording

We watched the video that night.

Nobody spoke.

The flash drive sat on the table for almost an hour before my father finally opened it.

I understood why.

Because pressing play meant accepting that whatever came next could never be undone.

My mother's face appeared on the screen.

And everything stopped.

She looked tired.

Much thinner than I remembered.

But she was smiling.

That smile broke my heart.

Because it reminded me of what I had lost.

"Thomas.""

Her voice filled the room.

My father immediately looked away.

He couldn't watch.

Not yet.

"If you're seeing this, then I was right to be careful.""

My hands tightened.

She continued.

"I hope I am wrong.""

A pause.

"I hope everyone I trusted proved me wrong.""

She looked directly into the camera.

"But I don't think they did.""

My father covered his mouth.

My mother's voice continued.

"First, I need you to understand something.""

She took a breath.

"I did not leave because I wanted to.""

My eyes filled with tears.

She knew.

She knew people might believe she abandoned us.

"Someone has been manipulating things around us.""

The room became silent.

"Someone has been moving pieces slowly.""

My father looked at the screen.

"They made me question people I loved.""

My mother's eyes became sad.

"And they made the people I loved question me.""

I looked down.

Because that was exactly what happened.

My father continued watching.

Then my mother's next words changed everything.

"The person I fear most is not Karen.""

My heart stopped.

She looked directly into the camera.

"It's someone closer.""

A pause.

"Someone who has been part of our family longer.""

My father whispered:

"No.""

I looked at him.

Because I knew he understood before I did.

My mother continued.

"I don't know how deep this goes.""

"But I found evidence that someone has been controlling information for years.""

The video glitched.

Then returned.

She held up a document.

"Someone changed records.""

My father leaned forward.

"What records?""

My mother's voice became softer.

"Records connected to my death.""

Nobody moved.

The room went cold.

My father stared.

"What?""

My mother continued.

"I found inconsistencies.""

"Inconsistencies about the accident.""

My heart started racing.

"Thomas, if you are watching this, please don't trust the first explanation.""

My father looked devastated.

Because he had trusted it.

For years.

Then my mother's final sentence appeared.

The sentence that changed everything.

"I believe the person responsible for everything is someone we invited into our home.""

The screen froze.

Then went black.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Because suddenly...

the question was no longer who betrayed us.

The question was:

How long had they been living with us?

And when my father looked at the frozen screen...

I realized he already knew the answer.

May you like

Because the person my mother was warning us about...

was someone he had never suspected.
