Chapter 28: The Mother Who Never Left Me
I thought I was prepared.
I thought after everything we had discovered, there was nothing left that could surprise me.
I was wrong.
Nothing prepared me for seeing my mother sitting by the window.
Alive.
Real.
Breathing.
For years, I had imagined this moment.
I imagined what I would say if I ever saw her again.
I imagined running into her arms.
I imagined crying.
I imagined asking why she left me.
But standing there...
I couldn't move.
Because the woman in front of me wasn't a memory.
She wasn't a photograph.
She wasn't a story.
She was my mother.
The nurse quietly stepped away.
Giving us privacy.
My father stood frozen beside me.
His entire body was shaking.
"Is that...""
He couldn't finish.
My mother turned.
Her eyes found him.
And for a moment, the entire world disappeared.
"Thomas.""
My father's face broke.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Just pain.
Seven years of pain.
He walked toward her slowly.
Like he was afraid she would disappear.
Like she was something impossible.
"I thought you were gone.""
My mother started crying.
"I know.""
The words were simple.
But they carried years of suffering.
My father stopped in front of her.
"Why?""
That was the question.
The question that had haunted him.
The question that had followed all of us.
My mother looked down.
"Because I thought coming back would put you in more danger.""
My father shook his head.
"You should have trusted me.""
A tear fell from her face.
"I wanted to.""
"Then why didn't you?""
She looked at me.
And everything changed.
"Because they were watching.""
My heart stopped.
"They?""
My mother looked at the door.
Then back at us.
"Richard.""
The name made my father go still.
My mother nodded.
"He wasn't just trying to control the family.""
She looked at me.
"He was trying to control you.""
I felt cold.
"Me?""
She reached for my hand.
The first touch from my mother in years.
I almost broke.
"I knew what you represented.""
I frowned.
"What I represented?""
She nodded.
"Your grandfather left something for you.""
"The inheritance.""
"More than that.""
She looked at my father.
"Your grandfather discovered what Richard was doing before he died.""
My father listened carefully.
"He created a safeguard.""
"What kind?""
My mother looked at me.
"You.""
I didn't understand.
"He knew Richard would try to take control. So he created a legal protection.""
She paused.
"Your inheritance could only be controlled by you once you became an adult.""
I stared.
"So Richard couldn't take it.""
"Exactly.""
My mother held my hand.
"And that made you the biggest obstacle.""
Everything suddenly made sense.
The sabotage.
The lies.
The attempts to make me fail.
They weren't just jealousy.
They weren't just cruelty.
They were strategy.
If I was weak...
If I doubted myself...
If I never reached independence...
they could control my future.
My father looked devastated.
"How did you survive?""
My mother looked away.
"After the accident, I woke up.""
The room became silent.
"I knew something was wrong.""
"What happened?""
"I tried to contact you.""
She looked at my father.
"But every attempt failed.""
"Why?""
"Because someone intercepted my messages.""
My father clenched his fists.
"Who?""
"Dr. Collins.""
The name hurt because we already knew.
"He convinced everyone I was unstable.""
My mother looked down.
"He said the accident affected my memory.""
I felt sick.
"They made people believe you couldn't come home.""
She nodded.
"I was placed under protection.""
"Protection?""
She gave a sad smile.
"That was the official word.""
My father understood.
"What was the truth?""
My mother looked at him.
"I was hidden.""
Silence.
"For years?""
She nodded.
"Because Richard knew if I returned, everything would fall apart.""
My eyes filled with tears.
"Mom...""
She looked at me.
"I'm sorry.""
The words I had wanted to hear for years.
But now that I heard them...
they hurt.
"Why didn't you fight harder?""
My voice cracked.
My father looked at me.
But my mother didn't get angry.
She accepted it.
"You're right to ask.""
She held my hand tighter.
"I spent years trying to find a way back.""
"Then why didn't you?""
"Because every time I got close, something happened.""
"What?""
"Someone would threaten me.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
She looked at me.
"Someone inside the system.""
The system.
Not just one person.
A network.
My mother continued.
"But I never stopped looking for a way to protect you.""
She reached beside her chair.
She pulled out a small box.
"I kept this for you.""
Inside was a necklace.
The one I remembered from childhood.
My mother smiled through tears.
"I wanted you to have something from me.""
I touched it.
And finally...
after years of feeling abandoned...
I understood.
She hadn't left me.
She had been fighting to return.
Then my mother said something that changed everything.
"There is one more thing you need to know.""
My father looked at her.
"What?""
She looked at me.
"Richard wasn't the person who created the plan.""
My heart stopped.
"Then who?""
My mother took a deep breath.
"The person behind everything is someone we all trusted.""
The same words.
The same warning.
But this time, my mother knew.
"Who?""
She looked at my father.
And whispered:
"Your father.""
My blood went cold.
"My grandfather?""
May you like
She nodded.
"He started it.""
