Chapter 9: The Woman Before Me

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The only sound in the room was Noah’s baby monitor.

A soft breathing noise.

Normal.

Peaceful.

Completely different from the chaos surrounding us.

Michael lowered the phone.

“First daughter-in-law?””

I nodded slowly.

“I heard her.””

“You knew?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“But I’m not surprised.””

Michael stared at me.

“What does that mean?””

I sat down.

“Patricia always needed control.””

He walked toward the window.

“But this?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t have one.

Then the phone rang again.

Same number.

This time Michael answered immediately.

“Laura?””

“Yes.””

“Don’t hang up.””

“I won’t.””

Michael gripped the phone.

“Tell me everything.””

There was a long pause.

Then Laura spoke.

“My name was Laura Bennett. I was married to Patricia’s oldest son, Daniel.””

Michael looked confused.

“Your brother?””

“Yes.””

I had heard about Daniel.

Everyone in Michael’s family avoided talking about him.

He had died years before we met.

An accident.

That was all I knew.

“What happened?”” Michael asked.

Laura’s voice shook.

“Patricia made me believe I was a terrible mother.””

I looked at the hidden camera.

The pattern was becoming clear.

“She convinced Daniel that I was unstable,” Laura continued.

Michael closed his eyes.

“How?””

“She recorded arguments.””

My blood ran cold.

“She would provoke me until I cried or yelled. Then she showed Daniel only my reaction.””

Exactly like Patricia had done to me.

“She made everyone think I was the problem.””

Michael sat down slowly.

“What happened to your marriage?””

Laura was quiet.

“Daniel left me.””

I felt a pain in my chest.

“And then?””

“She got custody.””

Michael looked horrified.

“How?””

“She had recordings.””

The same weapon.

Again.

“After Daniel died,” Laura continued, “I tried to tell people the truth.””

“What happened?””

“Nobody believed me.””

The silence afterward felt heavy.

Then Laura said:

“Until I saw what happened to you.””

Michael looked at me.

“You saw the video?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Patricia accidentally uploaded a backup file.””

My eyes widened.

“She keeps copies.””

Laura continued.

“She doesn’t just record people. She collects moments.””

Michael looked disgusted.

“Why?””

“Because she believes whoever controls the evidence controls the truth.””

The words hit me.

Because they explained everything.

The fake video.

The hidden camera.

The threats.

All of it.

Michael stood.

“Where are you?””

Laura hesitated.

“I can meet you.””

“When?””

“Tomorrow.””

“No.””

Michael’s voice was firm.

“Today.””

There was a pause.

Then Laura agreed.

After the call ended, Michael looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

“Sorry won’t erase what happened.””

“I know.””

He stepped closer.

“But I need you to know something.””

I looked at him.

“I believe you.””

Those words should have made me feel better.

But instead, I felt exhausted.

Because this was bigger than Patricia hurting my feelings.

She had been building a story about me for months.

Maybe years.

And now I knew something terrifying.

Patricia didn’t just want to destroy my marriage.

She wanted to make sure nobody would ever believe me.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, from Patricia.

A photo.

I opened it.

My blood froze.

It was a picture of Noah.

Sleeping.

Taken from inside our house.

May you like

Underneath it were four words:

*You still don’t understand me.*
