Chapter 3: The Part She Didn’t Want Anyone To See

The next morning, Patricia arrived at our house like she owned it.

She didn’t knock.

She never knocked.

She walked in carrying a small handbag and wearing the same calm expression she had worn the day before.

The expression of someone who believed she had already won.

Michael was sitting at the kitchen table.

He hadn’t slept.

Neither had I.

Noah was upstairs in his crib, finally resting after a restless night.

Patricia looked between us.

“So,” she said, “are we ready to talk like adults?””

I almost laughed.

“Adults don’t pour milk on babies.””

Her lips tightened.

“I knew you would exaggerate.””

Michael stood up.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“You said the video showed everything.””

“It did.””

“No. It didn’t.””

The confidence on her face disappeared.

Just for a second.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael placed his phone on the table.

“I checked the file information.””

Patricia went quiet.

“What file information?””

“The original recording.””

My heartbeat quickened.

Michael looked at her.

“The video you sent me wasn’t the original.””

She crossed her arms.

“Of course it was.””

“No.””

His voice was different.

Cold.

“I recovered the first version from your phone backup.””

Patricia’s face changed.

And suddenly, I knew.

She had been caught.

“What was in it?”” I asked.

Michael looked at me.

Then at his mother.

“The part before Sarah came downstairs.””

Nobody spoke.

The kitchen felt frozen.

Michael continued.

“The part where you were shaking the bottle at Noah.””

Patricia’s eyes narrowed.

“He wouldn’t stop crying.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Her voice rose.

“I was trying to calm him down!””

“You screamed at him.””

“I was frustrated.””

“You told him to shut up.””

Patricia looked away.

Michael unlocked his phone.

Then he played the audio.

Her own voice filled the room.

“SHUT UP! I’M SICK OF LISTENING TO YOU!””

Patricia immediately reached for the phone.

“Turn that off.””

Michael stepped back.

“No.””

For the first time, she looked scared.

I watched the woman who had tried to destroy me with a fake story finally realize something.

She wasn’t controlling the room anymore.

“You manipulated me,” Michael said.

Patricia scoffed.

“I was protecting myself.””

“From what?””

She didn’t answer.

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“From everyone seeing who you really are?””

Her eyes flashed.

“You always choose her.””

I felt a chill.

There it was.

The real reason.

This was never only about Noah.

It was about me.

About the fact that Michael had built a life with someone else.

Patricia grabbed her purse.

“You’ll regret this.””

I looked at her.

“No. You will.””

She stopped at the door.

Then she turned around.

“You think this recording changes everything?””

Michael frowned.

“What else is there?””

Patricia smiled.

Not the confident smile from yesterday.

Something colder.

Something desperate.

“You should ask your wife why she never told you the truth about what happened before Noah was born.””

My entire body went still.

Michael looked at me.

“Sarah?””

May you like

I felt the past I had buried for years suddenly open its eyes.

And I knew Patricia had just found a new way to hurt me.
