Chapter 2: The Husband Who Believed the Video
I sat in the emergency room waiting area with Noah sleeping against my shoulder.
The doctors had checked him.
Thankfully, he was breathing normally.
No serious injury.
But I still couldn’t stop shaking.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Patricia tipping that bottle.
I saw my son’s terrified face.
And I heard her say, “Maybe now you’ll finally shut your mouth.””
Michael arrived twenty minutes later.
He didn’t run to Noah.
He didn’t ask if our son was okay.
He walked straight toward me.
His face was pale.
His first words were not “Are you okay?””
They were:
“Mom says you attacked her.””
I stared at him.
“Your mother poured milk over our baby’s face.””
His jaw tightened.
“She said you hit her.””
“Because she hurt Noah!””
“Sarah, she sent me the video.””
My heart sank.
Of course she did.
Patricia had moved fast.
She had built the story before I even left the house.
“Did you watch the whole thing?”” I asked.
Michael hesitated.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
“I saw you slap her.””
“You saw me react after she hurt our son.””
“She’s my mother.””
“And Noah is your son.””
The words came out louder than I intended.
People in the waiting room looked over.
Michael lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand what this looks like.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
“What this looks like?””
“Yes.””
“No. You don’t understand what this feels like.””
I looked down at Noah.
His tiny eyelashes rested against his cheeks.
“He was crying because he needed someone,” I whispered.
“And she decided to punish him.””
Michael rubbed his forehead.
“My mother said he had been screaming for hours.””
“He’s six months old.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
That question hurt him.
I could see it.
But instead of answering, he looked away.
The silence between us felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.
A nurse walked over.
“Is this Noah’s father?””
Michael nodded.
She gave him a serious look.
“Your son is fine now, but he was extremely distressed when he arrived.””
Michael swallowed.
“Can I see him?””
I stepped back.
For a moment, I wanted to say no.
I wanted him to feel even a fraction of the helplessness I felt.
But Noah needed his father.
So I let him hold him.
Michael looked down at our son.
And for the first time that night, his anger disappeared.
“He’s so small,” he whispered.
I didn’t answer.
Because he should have known that before.
A few minutes later, Patricia called.
Michael looked at his phone.
My chest tightened.
“Don’t,” I said.
He looked at me.
“She’s my mother.””
“And I’m your wife.””
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, he answered.
“Mom?””
I watched his face change as she spoke.
Concern.
Confusion.
Then anger.
He turned toward me.
“What do you mean she was recording?””
I froze.
Michael looked at the phone.
“Wait. You said the video was already saved?””
Patricia said something else.
His eyebrows pulled together.
“What do you mean you edited it?””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
Edited?
After a long pause, Michael lowered the phone.
His face had changed.
“What did she do?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer immediately.
May you like
Then he looked at me and said:
“Sarah… my mother just admitted she cut something out of the video.””
