Chapter 11: The Video That Was Never Meant to Be Seen
We didn’t open the video until we reached Laura’s house.
I couldn’t explain why.
Maybe because some part of me was afraid.
Maybe because I already knew Patricia had spent months creating a version of me that wasn’t real.
And I didn’t know what she had prepared next.
Laura opened the door before we even knocked.
She looked older than I expected.
Not old.
Just tired.
Like someone who had spent years carrying something heavy.
“Michael?””
He nodded.
“This is Sarah.””
Laura looked at me.
Then she said something unexpected.
“I’m sorry.””
I blinked.
“For what?””
“For what she did to you.””
That almost broke me.
Because she was the first person who didn’t ask what I had done wrong.
We sat at her kitchen table.
Noah slept in his carrier beside me.
Laura placed a folder on the table.
“She kept everything.””
Michael opened it.
Inside were printed screenshots.
Messages.
Dates.
Notes.
“She documented every argument,” Laura explained.
“But only after provoking them.””
Michael looked through the papers.
“She planned this?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
Laura looked down.
“Years.””
I felt a chill.
“She did this before?””
Laura nodded.
“She did it to me.””
Then she looked at Michael.
“And she tried to do it to every woman who became important to her sons.””
Michael stared.
“Why?””
Laura gave a sad smile.
“Because she doesn’t believe love means letting go.””
Silence.
“She believes love means ownership.””
The words stayed with me.
Then Michael pulled out his phone.
“The video.””
Laura looked at him.
“What video?””
“The one she sent Sarah.””
He showed her the title.
Laura’s face changed.
“Oh no.””
“What?””
“She has been waiting to use that.””
Michael frowned.
“You know what’s inside?””
“No.””
Laura looked terrified.
“But I know what she does.””
We opened the video.
The screen showed our living room.
It was recorded from one of Patricia’s hidden cameras.
I felt sick.
Then I saw myself.
Sitting on the couch.
Crying.
Patricia was standing in front of me.
“You know Michael will leave if he finds out.””
My heart stopped.
That wasn’t the same hospital conversation.
This was different.
A different day.
A different moment.
“What is she talking about?”” Michael whispered.
The video continued.
My younger self looked terrified.
“I didn’t do anything.””
Patricia leaned closer.
“You know what people will think.””
I watched myself shake my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Patricia smiled.
“Because I have proof.””
The video paused.
Michael looked at me.
“Sarah?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because I recognized the room.
I recognized the day.
It was the day before we found out I was pregnant with Noah.
The day Patricia accused me of something I never did.
Laura looked at me.
“What happened?””
I swallowed.
“She accused me of cheating.””
Michael froze.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“She said I was hiding something.””
“Why?””
“Because I had a male coworker help me move some boxes.””
Michael stared.
“That’s it?””
“Yes.””
The video continued.
Patricia’s voice filled the room.
“You should know, Sarah. Men leave when they realize they married the wrong woman.””
I felt tears forming.
Because I remembered how small she made me feel.
But then the video showed something I had never seen.
Something I never knew happened after I left the room.
Patricia turned off the camera.
And called someone.
The audio was still recording.
Her voice changed completely.
Calm.
Confident.
“She believes it.””
A man answered.
I couldn’t hear his voice clearly.
Patricia continued:
“Good.””
A pause.
“She’ll be easier to control now.””
Michael leaned closer.
“Who is she talking to?””
Then Patricia said a name.
A name that made my blood freeze.
Because I knew it.
Michael knew it too.
May you like
And when he heard it, he whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
