Chapter 10: The Woman Behind the Evidence
I stared at the picture until my hands went numb.
Noah was sleeping.
My baby.
In his crib.
The photo had been taken from an angle that made my stomach twist.
It wasn’t from the doorway.
It wasn’t from the hallway.
It was close.
Too close.
“Michael.””
My voice barely came out.
He looked over.
Then he saw the screen.
Everything changed.
His face lost all color.
“When was this taken?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
He grabbed his phone and called Patricia.
She answered immediately.
Almost like she had been waiting.
“Did you get my message?””
Michael’s voice was cold.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then Patricia laughed softly.
“Why?””
“Where are you?””
“Does it matter?””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You took a picture of Noah.””
“I’m his grandmother.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Patricia sighed.
“You’re becoming very dramatic, Michael.””
He looked at me.
I could see his anger building.
Not the anger he had shown me before.
Something different.
Something deeper.
“You installed cameras in our house.””
“I wanted to make sure my grandson was safe.””
“You recorded us without permission.””
“You’re welcome.””
Michael’s jaw clenched.
“You think this is normal?””
“No.””
Her voice became sharp.
“I think what’s happening is that you’ve forgotten who actually cares about you.””
I stepped closer.
“Give me the phone.””
Michael looked at me.
I shook my head.
“No. Let me talk.””
He handed it over.
“Patricia.””
Silence.
Then:
“Sarah.””
The way she said my name made my skin crawl.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That I tried to help you.””
I almost laughed.
“You poured milk on my baby.””
“You hit me.””
“You manipulated a video.””
“You’re emotional.””
“You put cameras in my house.””
“You’re unstable.””
There it was.
The word she had been waiting to use.
The same weapon.
She wanted me to react.
She wanted me angry.
But this time, I stayed calm.
“You’ve been collecting evidence against me.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“I’ve been collecting evidence of your behavior.””
Michael looked at me.
I knew he understood now.
She always flipped the story.
She never admitted what she started.
She only documented the explosion afterward.
“Patricia,” I said, “why did you really do this?””
A pause.
Longer than before.
Then she answered:
“Because I knew this would happen.””
“What would happen?””
“That you would turn Michael against me.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“You did this because you were afraid?””
“No.””
Her voice hardened.
“I did this because I know women like you.””
The insult was quiet.
Controlled.
“You come into a family and slowly take everything.””
I froze.
Everything suddenly made sense.
This wasn’t about Noah.
It wasn’t about the recording.
It wasn’t even about me.
It was about losing control over Michael.
“I married your son,” I said.
“You changed him.””
“No.””
“You made him choose you.””
Michael took the phone from me.
“That’s enough.””
Patricia went silent.
Then she whispered:
“You’ll regret choosing her.””
The call ended.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Michael said something that shocked me.
“She’s scared.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She’s not confident anymore.””
I nodded slowly.
“Because she’s losing control.””
He looked at the picture again.
Then his expression changed.
“We need to find where this came from.””
“What do you mean?””
“If she sent this from a camera, there’s probably more.””
A cold feeling settled over me.
More cameras.
More recordings.
More secrets.
Michael grabbed his keys.
“We’re going to meet Laura.””
I looked upstairs at Noah.
“What about him?””
Michael looked toward the baby monitor.
“We don’t leave him alone with anyone.””
I nodded.
Because for the first time, we both understood the same thing.
The person we trusted most had become the person we needed to protect ourselves from.
But as we prepared to leave, another notification appeared on my phone.
A new video file.
No sender.
No number.
No explanation.
