Chapter 7: The Woman Who Carried My Husband’s Last Message
The abandoned farmhouse sat twenty miles outside the city, surrounded by empty fields and tall grass bending under the weight of the wind.
It was the kind of place where people went when they wanted to disappear.
No neighbors.
No cameras.
No curious questions.
Just silence.
And after everything that had happened, silence terrified me more than noise.
Rebecca parked several yards away from the building.
“She chose this location,” she said.
“Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Why would she trust us?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because Mark trusted you.””
That answer should have comforted me.
Instead, it reminded me of everything I still didn't understand.
Mark trusted me enough to protect me.
But not enough to tell me the truth.
I followed Rebecca toward the farmhouse with the black document case pressed against my chest.
The front door opened before we reached it.
A woman stood inside.
She looked younger than I expected.
Maybe early thirties.
Dark hair pulled back.
Tired eyes.
A person who looked like she had spent too many nights sleeping with one ear open.
When she saw me, her expression changed.
“You're Laura.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
For a moment, she simply stared at me.
Then she whispered:
“He loved you.””
The words hit me unexpectedly.
I didn't know whether to be angry or grateful.
“You knew my husband.””
“Yes.””
“Were you close?””
Vanessa looked down.
“We were friends.””
The answer was careful.
Too careful.
I noticed Rebecca watching her.
“Can we come inside?””
Vanessa stepped aside.
The farmhouse was almost empty. A small table. Two chairs.
A mattress in the corner. A suitcase against the wall.
She hadn't been living there.
She had been surviving there.
Rebecca closed the door.
“Vanessa, we need answers.””
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“Mark told me this day might come.””
My chest tightened.
“He talked about me?””
“All the time.””
I almost laughed.
“He never told me about you.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
The honesty in her voice made it harder to be angry.
“Why?””
“Because he was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That if you knew everything, you would try to help him.””
I looked away.
“That sounds like him.””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
She walked to the table and picked up a small envelope.
“This is why I agreed to meet you.””
My name was written on it.
Again.
Mark's handwriting.
My hands shook.
“How long have you had this?””
“Since the week before he died.””
“Why didn't you give it to me?””
“Because Mark told me not to.””
I looked at Rebecca.
“He gave instructions to everyone.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He knew Richard would move quickly.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Laura,
If Vanessa is the one giving you this, then she survived.
That matters.
Trust her.
I stopped reading.
Trust her.
Those two words hurt.
Because they proved Mark had known Vanessa would become part of my life after he was gone.
He had prepared a future where I would have to rely on another woman.
I continued.
Vanessa discovered something I couldn't ignore. She risked her career to tell me the truth. She protected information that could have destroyed Dad's control over the company.
She is not your enemy.
She is one of the few people who understood what was happening.
I lowered the letter.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“I believe you.””
She looked surprised.
“Why?””
“Because Mark believed you.””
A silence followed.
Then she sat down.
“I found the first irregularity eight months ago.””
Rebecca opened her notebook.
“What kind?””
“Payments. Large payments. Companies receiving money for services they never provided.””
“Who approved them?””
“At first, I thought it was a mistake. Then I found authorization codes.””
“Mark's?””
Vanessa nodded.
“But they weren't his.””
“Someone copied his credentials.””
“Yes.””
My hands tightened.
“Richard?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I don't know if he personally did everything.””
“But he knew.””
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I confronted him.””
The room became still.
“You confronted Richard?””
“I asked him about one of the companies. He told me I should focus on my job and stop looking into things above my position.””
“And then?””
“Two days later, my computer was wiped.””
Rebecca looked up.
“Wiped?””
“All files gone. Emails deleted. Access revoked.””
“Did you report it?””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“To whom?””
No one answered.
Because we all knew.
Reporting a problem inside a company controlled by the person causing the problem was not protection.
It was a warning.
“Then you went to Mark.””
“Yes.””
“And he believed you.””
“At first, he didn't want to.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa looked down.
“He was his father's son. He wanted to believe there was another explanation.””
That sounded painfully familiar.
Mark had spent his whole life wanting Richard's approval.
Even when Richard hurt him.
Even when Richard disappointed him.
“He changed after he found the second set of records,” Vanessa continued.
“What records?””
“Personal accounts.””
She pulled out a small flash drive.
“Richard wasn't only moving company money.””
Rebecca took it carefully.
“What else?””
“Payments connected to people who were investigating him.””
A chill ran through me.
“Investigators?””
“Journalists. Auditors. Former employees.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard didn't want anyone looking too closely.””
I stared at the flash drive.
The world I thought I knew was disappearing piece by piece.
Mark had not simply left behind a legal battle.
He had left behind a war.
A war he fought alone.
“Why didn't you tell me before?”” I asked Vanessa.
She looked at me.
“Because Mark asked me not to.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone keeps telling me Mark wanted to protect me. But do you know what it feels like to discover that your husband had an entire life of secrets after he dies?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I do.””
That surprised me.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Mark didn't tell me everything either.””
For the first time, I saw something in her face besides fear.
Pain.
“He used people as shields.””
The words were harsh.
But they were true.
“He thought if he carried the danger alone, nobody else would get hurt.””
I closed my eyes.
That was Mark.
Completely.
Beautifully.
Frustratingly.
“Where is the rest of the evidence?”” Rebecca asked.
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“There is one more piece.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
“Of who?””
May you like
Vanessa looked at me.
“Richard.””
