Chapter 6: The Secret Mark Buried Beneath His Company

Finding Vanessa Reed became our priority.

But finding someone who didn't want to be found was not easy.

Rebecca contacted former employees. She searched public records. She reached out to professional contacts who might know where Vanessa had gone.

Nothing.

No recent address.

No social media activity.

No employment records.

It was as if Vanessa had vanished from the world.

Which, according to Rebecca, was impossible.

“People don't disappear completely,” she said while reviewing files in her office.

“They do if someone helps them.””

She looked at me.

“Exactly.””

The words sat heavily between us.

Someone had helped Vanessa disappear.

The question was whether they had protected her or silenced her.

By evening, we received another surprise.

Daniel Price agreed to meet us.

The company's chief financial officer arrived at a quiet coffee shop across town. He looked exhausted, like a man who hadn't slept in weeks.

The moment he saw me, he stood.

“Mrs. Bennett.””

“Daniel.””

“I am so sorry about Mark.””

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

He sat down.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, he looked at Rebecca.

“Did you find the cabinet?””

“Yes.””

His face tightened.

“Then you know.””

“Know what?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“That Mark was right.””

“About what?””

He lowered his voice.

“Everything.””

He pulled out a folder.

“I didn't want to get involved because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of Richard?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because Richard doesn't threaten people directly. He makes them feel like they have no choice.””

That sounded familiar.

Very familiar.

“What did Mark discover?””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Money was being moved through fake consulting companies.””

“By Richard?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Richard approved the transactions.””

“That's not the same thing.””

“No.””

“Then who was responsible?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That is why Mark was investigating.””

He slid a document across the table.

At the top was a company name.

*Lighthouse Advisory Group.*

My hands went cold.

“The same name.””

Daniel nodded.

“Project Lighthouse wasn't a project.””

“What was it?””

“A network.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Years ago, Richard created a system of outside companies that handled consulting, investments, and partnerships. At first, it was legitimate. Then money started moving in ways that didn't make sense.””

“How much?””

“Millions.””

I stared at the document.

“And Mark found this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't he expose it?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because he needed proof.””

“And because he was dying.””

Daniel nodded.

“He knew he didn't have much time.””

The thought hurt.

Mark had been fighting a battle while his body was failing.

And I had never known.

“What happened to Vanessa?””

Daniel became silent.

Then he said:

“She found something worse than the money.””

“What?””

“She found a signature.””

Rebecca frowned.

“Whose?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Mark's.””

I felt the room disappear.

“What?””

“There were documents showing transactions approved using Mark's authorization.””

“But he didn't approve them.””

Daniel nodded.

“That was the problem.””

Someone had used my husband's name.

Someone had made it look like Mark was involved.

Rebecca immediately understood.

“Identity fraud.””

“Possibly.””

I stared at the papers.

Richard wasn't just stealing.

He was building a shield.

If anyone investigated, the blame could fall on Mark.

A dead man couldn't defend himself.

“He wanted Mark to take the fall.””

Daniel didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

This time there was no threat.

Only a photograph.

Mark and Vanessa standing outside the hospital.

On the back of the image was handwritten text.

*Your husband trusted her because she knew the truth.*

Then another line.

*Find her before Richard does.*

I looked up.

Rebecca was already standing.

“We need to leave.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent this knows where we are.””

Daniel looked frightened.

“Someone followed me here.””

“What?””

“I noticed a black SUV outside.””

My heart started racing.

Rebecca grabbed the folder.

“We're leaving separately.””

As we walked outside, I looked across the street.

A black SUV sat near the curb.

The engine was running.

The driver's window was tinted.

For a moment, I thought I saw someone watching us.

Then the vehicle pulled away.

I stood there, frozen.

Mark had spent months trying to uncover the truth.

Now I understood why he hid the envelope.

Why he created instructions.

Why he told me not to open anything unless I had no other choice.

Because he knew the truth was dangerous.

But he had underestimated one thing.

He thought protecting me meant keeping me away from the fight.

He didn't realize I would eventually be forced into it anyway.

As we drove away, Rebecca received a call.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Her expression changed.

“Where?””

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Laura.””

“What?””

“They found Vanessa.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

Rebecca slowly lowered the phone.

“She was found outside the city.””

“Is she okay?””

Rebecca didn't answer immediately.

That was all the answer I needed.

“What happened?””

“She is alive.””

I exhaled.

“But?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“She has been hiding because someone tried to kill her.””

The road ahead blurred.

“And now?””

Rebecca tightened her grip on the phone.

“Now she wants to talk to you.””

“Why me?””

Rebecca looked at the sealed folder on my lap.

“Because Mark left something with her.””

I stared out the window.

Something else.

Another secret.

Another piece of the man I loved.

May you like

And this time, I wasn't sure if learning the truth would bring me closer to Mark...

Or show me how much of his final battle I had never known.
