Chapter 12: The Father I Thought I Lost
I stared at the photograph until my eyes hurt.
The man standing beside Mark wasn't a stranger.
He wasn't someone who simply resembled my father.
It was him.
The same eyes.
The same scar near his eyebrow.
The same slight tilt of his head.
The man I had buried fourteen years earlier.
My father.
“I don't understand.””
My voice barely worked.
Dr. Hart sat down slowly.
“Mark told me your father was alive.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He died.””
“Laura—”
“I was there.””
My voice rose.
“I saw the funeral.””
Rebecca looked at me carefully.
“Are you sure?””
The question hurt.
“Yes.””
But suddenly...
I wasn't.
Because grief changes memories.
And childhood grief changes everything.
I had been twelve.
My mother had handled the funeral arrangements.
I remembered flowers.
I remembered adults whispering.
I remembered being told my father was gone.
But I didn't remember seeing his body.
I didn't remember saying goodbye.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What is happening?””
Dr. Hart looked at Rebecca.
“I think Mark knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That Laura's father was alive.””
The room went silent.
“Why would he hide that from me?””
Dr. Hart looked at the photograph.
“Because your father asked him to.””
My heart broke.
Another secret.
Another person who chose silence.
“Where is he?””
Dr. Hart hesitated.
“I don't know.””
“But you knew him.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because he helped Mark.””
“With what?””
Dr. Hart looked at the folder.
“The original investigation.””
Rebecca stood.
“Wait.””
She looked at the photograph.
“Are you saying Laura's father was involved with Project Lighthouse?””
“Yes.””
The name sounded different now.
Bigger.
Older.
Not just something Mark created.
Something that existed before him.
I sat down.
My entire life had shifted.
My husband had hidden my father's survival.
My father had hidden his own survival.
And Richard Bennett had been connected to all of it.
“Why?””
I asked.
“Why would my father disappear?””
Dr. Hart answered quietly.
“Because he discovered something about Richard.””
The room felt smaller.
“What?””
“Years ago, before Mark became CEO, your father worked as an outside financial consultant.””
I stared.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“He knew Richard?””
“They worked together.””
My stomach turned.
“And then?””
“Your father found evidence that money was being diverted.””
The same story.
The same pattern.
Decades earlier.
“Did Richard hurt him?””
Dr. Hart didn't answer.
That was enough.
Rebecca immediately started making notes.
“This changes everything.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
“Because this may not have started with Mark.””
She looked at the photograph.
“It may have started with your father.””
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
“Laura.””
My entire body went still.
Because I knew that voice.
I hadn't heard it in fourteen years.
“Dad?””
Silence.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
I couldn't speak.
“You shouldn't have found out this way.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“You're alive.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The word came out broken.
“Why did you leave me?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Because Richard Bennett was going to kill me.””
Nobody moved.
Not Rebecca.
Not Dr. Hart.
Not Vanessa.
No one.
“What?””
“He knew I had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“Everything.””
My hands shook.
“Dad, where are you?””
“I can't tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because if you know, Richard will know.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She motioned for me to keep him talking.
“Dad, Mark knew?””
“Yes.””
My heart broke.
“How long?””
“Three years.””
Three years.
Mark knew my father was alive for three years.
“Why didn't he tell me?””
“Because I asked him not to.””
My eyes closed.
Of course.
Another promise.
Another secret.
“Your husband saved my life.””
The words destroyed my anger.
“Mark knew Richard would come after anyone who challenged him.””
My father continued.
“He protected me because he knew I was the last person who could expose everything.””
“Where are you?””
“Laura, listen carefully.””
His voice changed.
Urgent.
“Richard doesn't know everything.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means the person helping him is not who you think.””
A chill went through me.
“What person?””
My father whispered:
“The person who has been feeding Richard information.””
The line crackled.
“Dad?””
Then he said one final sentence.
“Laura, don't trust Rebecca.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Because the impossible had just happened.
My dead father had called me.
May you like
And the final words he left me with were the one thing I never expected to hear.
Don't trust the woman who had been protecting me since the beginning.
