Chapter 13: The Betrayal Hidden Behind the Woman Who Saved Me
The silence after my father’s call was unbearable.
Not because nobody had anything to say.
Because everyone did.
Everyone had questions.
Everyone had theories.
Everyone had reasons why I should trust them.
And after everything I had learned, I no longer knew who deserved that trust.
Rebecca was the first to speak.
“Laura.””
I looked at her.
The woman who had stood beside me when Richard locked me out.
The woman who found the trust documents.
The woman who helped me uncover the truth.
The woman my father had just warned me about.
“Don’t.””
The word surprised her.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t explain yet.””
Her expression changed.
Not anger.
Hurt.
“I understand.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“You don’t.””
I held the phone tighter.
“I spent my entire life believing secrets were something other people kept from me.””
My voice shook.
“My husband kept secrets. My father kept secrets. Richard kept secrets.””
I looked at her.
“And now I’m being told you might be one too.””
Rebecca didn't defend herself.
That frightened me.
A guilty person would argue.
A liar would rush to control the story.
But Rebecca simply stood there.
Waiting.
“I want the truth,” I said.
“You deserve it.””
“Then give it to me.””
She took a slow breath.
“I knew your father was alive.””
The room froze.
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Before Mark died.””
I stared at her.
Another betrayal.
Another hidden piece of my own life.
“Why?””
“Because Mark asked me to protect that information.””
“Everyone says that.””
“I know.””
“And every time someone says it, I lose another piece of trust.””
Rebecca looked down.
“I understand.””
“No, you don't.””
My voice broke.
“You knew my father was alive while I was grieving him.””
She swallowed.
“I knew how much pain you carried.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father believed Richard would use you to find him.””
I shook my head.
“So my father disappeared, my husband knew, and my lawyer knew.””
I laughed bitterly.
“What else don't I know?””
Rebecca didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
“One thing.””
I waited.
“The first time Mark came to me about Richard, he wasn't investigating the company.””
“What was he investigating?””
“You.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rebecca opened her briefcase.
She removed an old file.
“This was created eighteen years ago.””
My name wasn't on it.
My father's was.
Inside were financial records.
Consulting agreements.
Letters.
And one document that made my hands shake.
A birth certificate.
My birth certificate.
But attached to it was another document.
A legal custody agreement.
I stared at the names.
My father.
Richard Bennett.
And another name.
My mother.
“What is this?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Your father and Richard knew each other before you met Mark.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It does.””
She pointed to the documents.
“Your father helped Richard build the first version of Bennett Industrial Group.””
I looked at the pages.
“But why?””
“Because they were partners.””
My stomach dropped.
“And then they became enemies.””
“Why?””
Rebecca looked toward the window.
“Because your father discovered Richard was moving money even back then.””
I sat down.
My entire life was becoming a story I had never been told.
“My father didn't leave me.””
“No.””
“Richard forced him to disappear.””
“Yes.””
“Mark knew.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was overwhelming.
Not because of what I learned.
Because of what it meant.
Mark had carried my father's secret too.
He had spent years protecting the people he loved from the same man.
Rebecca placed another document in front of me.
“This is why Mark created Project Lighthouse.””
I looked up.
“What was it really?””
“An insurance plan.””
“For what?””
“For the possibility that Richard would win.””
The words were terrifying.
“Mark knew he might lose?””
“Yes.””
“He was dying.””
“Yes.””
“And he still planned all of this?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Because Mark knew Richard better than anyone.””
I looked at the documents.
Then I remembered my father's warning.
Don't trust Rebecca.
Something didn't fit.
“Why would my father tell me not to trust you?””
Rebecca looked away.
“I don't know.””
But I noticed something.
A hesitation.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But there.
“You do know.””
“No.””
“You do.””
Rebecca was silent.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I think I know.””
Everyone turned.
She had been quiet since the call.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Rebecca.
“Because I saw it.””
Rebecca's expression changed.
“What did you see?””
“Three months ago.””
Vanessa opened her bag.
She removed a photograph.
A photograph of Rebecca.
Standing outside Richard Bennett's office.
My chest tightened.
Rebecca looked at the image.
Then closed her eyes.
“I can explain.””
The sentence was devastating.
Because it meant there was something to explain.
“You met Richard.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before Mark died.””
“Why?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because I was trying to find out what he knew.””
“That isn't the whole truth.””
“No.””
The honesty hurt.
“I met Richard because he contacted me.””
“About what?””
Rebecca took a breath.
“About Mark's estate.””
I stared.
“He wanted to know what Mark had prepared.””
“And you told him?””
“No.””
“Then why meet him?””
“Because I needed him to believe I was cooperating.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
There was more.
“Rebecca.””
She finally said:
“I made one mistake.””
“What?””
“I underestimated how dangerous Richard was.””
The room became silent.
“What did he do?””
“He recorded our conversations.””
My blood went cold.
“Does he have something against you?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“The first time I met Richard, he asked me a question.””
“What question?””
She looked at the floor.
“Whether I would choose my career over protecting Mark’s family.””
I waited.
“And?””
“I told him no.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because he knew something about me.””
“What?””
“That I had once helped him.””
The room went quiet.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
Rebecca’s voice lowered.
“Before I knew who he really was.””
I looked at the woman who had saved me.
The woman who had hidden things from me.
The woman who might have been connected to the beginning of all of this.
“How deep does this go?””
Rebecca answered softly.
“Deeper than Mark ever wanted you to know.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
From my father.
*I know you are with Rebecca. Leave before she tells you the rest.*
I looked at the screen.
Then at Rebecca.
Because now I had two people I loved telling me opposite things.
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered if the truth wasn't hidden from me.
Maybe the truth was being fought over.
