Chapter 14: The Final Letter My Husband Left Behind

We didn't leave immediately.

That was the first decision I made without letting fear control me.

Everyone had spent weeks telling me what to do.

Richard.

Evelyn.

My father.

Rebecca.

Even Mark, in his final instructions.

But nobody had asked what I wanted.

So I asked myself.

And the answer was simple.

I wanted the truth.

All of it.

“Open everything,” I said.

Rebecca looked at me.

“What?””

“No more secrets.””

I placed the black document case on the table.

“No more protecting me.””

Her eyes softened.

“Laura.””

“I spent years believing protection meant keeping someone in the dark.””

I looked at the folders.

“But darkness is where fear grows.””

Nobody argued.

Rebecca opened the final compartment of the case.

A small envelope was inside.

Different from the others.

Older.

Worn.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Mark.

But this time, the envelope was labeled differently.

*For Laura. Read only when everyone has lied.*

My breath caught.

Rebecca stepped back.

I opened it.

Laura,

If you are reading this, then I was right.

Everyone around you believes they are protecting you.

They are not.

They are protecting themselves from the pain of telling you the truth.

I swallowed.

The truth is that I knew about your father before we married.

My hands shook.

I knew because I found him while investigating Richard.

I stopped.

Even after everything, that still hurt.

But I did not tell you because your father asked me not to.

He believed the only way to keep you safe was for you to remain disconnected from the fight.

I disagreed.

I almost smiled through tears.

That sounded like Mark.

We argued about it.

For the first time in our relationship, I was angry with him.

Because I realized something.

He was making the same mistake I was making.

He was trying to carry everything alone.

The words blurred.

Laura, you have spent your whole life surrounded by people who decided what you could handle.

Your father did it.

I did it.

Richard did it in the cruelest way.

But you are not fragile.

I pressed the letter to my chest.

You are the strongest person I have ever known.

I continued.

The reason I chose you as the final protector of Bennett Industrial Group was not because you understood business.

It was because you understood people.

Richard understands money.

He understands control.

He understands fear.

But he does not understand love.

My tears fell.

And that is why he will lose.

At the bottom was one final paragraph.

There is only one thing I need you to know.

The person who betrayed me was not Richard.

I stopped.

Everyone went silent.

I read the sentence again.

The person who betrayed me was someone I trusted completely.

My eyes lifted.

“Who?””

Rebecca looked away.

Vanessa looked terrified.

I continued.

I never discovered whether they betrayed me willingly.

But I know this.

They are the reason Richard moved faster than expected.

They are the reason Vanessa disappeared.

They are the reason my final plan had to activate.

My heart raced.

Mark knew.

He knew someone close to him was involved.

But he didn't know who.

The letter ended with one sentence.

Laura, trust actions, not promises.

I folded the paper.

No accusations.

No names.

Just a warning.

Rebecca sat down.

“I didn't betray him.””

I looked at her.

“I don't know.””

The words hurt both of us.

But they were honest.

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone froze.

The door opened.

No one had announced themselves.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

My father.

I couldn't move.

“Laura.””

The room disappeared.

For fourteen years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined anger.

I imagined questions.

I imagined forgiveness.

But I never imagined feeling like a child again.

“Why?””

That was all I could say.

My father looked broken.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid?””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let me grow up without you.””

“I know.””

“Mark knew.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why did you both decide my life was yours to control?””

The question made him cry.

And seeing my father cry was somehow worse than seeing him gone.

“Because Richard destroys everyone who gets close to exposing him.””

“You should have trusted me.””

“I should have.””

The honesty hurt.

My father stepped forward.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“I thought disappearing would protect you.””

He looked at the letter.

“Mark made the same mistake.””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

“That Mark didn't hide things because he didn't love you.””

A tear fell down his face.

“He hid them because he loved you too much.””

I wanted to hate that answer.

But I couldn't.

Because I knew Mark.

The problem was never a lack of love.

The problem was that everyone who loved me thought they had to save me from the truth.

My father looked at Rebecca.

“You need to know something.””

“What?””

“The person who betrayed Mark was not working for Richard.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

My father continued.

“They were working for someone else.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Someone who wanted Bennett Industrial Group.””

Rebecca stood.

“That makes no sense. Richard wanted the company.””

“No.””

My father shook his head.

“Richard wanted control.””

The distinction was terrifying.

“Then who wanted ownership?””

My father answered.

“The person who created the entire plan.””

The room became silent.

My father looked at the documents.

“Project Lighthouse wasn't Mark's idea.””

My heart stopped.

“Whose was it?””

May you like

My father looked at me.

“Mine.””
