Chapter 5: The Woman Mark Hid From Me

“Who is she?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Rebecca didn't answer.

That scared me more than the message.

We were sitting in her office again, but everything felt different now.

Before, I had entered that room as a grieving widow looking for answers.

Now I was sitting across from my husband's lawyer holding a message that suggested there was a part of Mark’s life I knew nothing about.

A woman in photographs.

A secret.

A name I had never heard.

“Rebecca.””

She folded her hands.

“Laura, I need you to understand something.””

“That sounds like the beginning of a sentence where you tell me something I won't like.””

She looked down.

“You're right.””

My heart sank.

“Who is she?””

Rebecca stood and walked toward a locked cabinet.

“She was connected to Mark's investigation.””

“That's not an answer.””

“No. It isn't.””

She removed a small envelope.

“I hoped you would never need to see this.””

I stared at the envelope.

Another secret.

Another thing Mark had protected from me.

How many more were there?

Rebecca placed it on the table.

“Her name is Vanessa Reed.””

I waited.

Nothing.

The name meant nothing.

“Who is Vanessa Reed?””

“She worked for Bennett Industrial Group.””

“In what position?””

“Financial analyst.””

“Did Mark have an affair with her?””

The words were painful to say.

Rebecca immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I know Mark.””

The certainty in her voice surprised me.

“You knew him better than I did?””

“No,” she said quietly.

“But I knew what kind of man he was.””

I looked away.

Because that was the question haunting me.

Not whether Mark loved me.

I knew he did.

The question was whether he had hidden things from me because he didn't trust me.

Rebecca opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Not romantic photographs.

Documents.

Vanessa sitting across from Mark in a restaurant.

Vanessa entering an office building.

Vanessa handing Mark a folder.

“She was a source,” Rebecca explained.

“A source?””

“She discovered irregularities in company finances before Mark did.””

I looked closer at the photographs.

“She helped him investigate?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't he tell me?””

Rebecca was quiet.

Finally she said:

“Because he knew you would become involved.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

“Mark believed your greatest strength was also your greatest vulnerability.””

“My children?””

“Yes.””

I looked back at the photographs.

“He was trying to protect us.””

“Yes.””

“But he made me feel like a stranger in my own marriage.””

The words surprised me because I had not realized they were waiting inside me.

Rebecca softened.

“Laura...””

“I spent years telling him we were a team. I told him he didn't have to carry everything alone.””

My voice broke.

“And he still did.””

Rebecca didn't interrupt.

“He knew I was strong enough to fight. He knew I would never abandon him. But he also knew I would walk into danger if I thought he needed me.””

I touched the photograph.

“Who sent that message?””

“We need to find out.””

“Could it be Vanessa?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa disappeared three weeks ago.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

“She was scheduled to meet Mark the week before he died. She never showed.””

“Did Mark know?””

“Yes.””

“And he didn't tell me?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, anger replaced grief.

Not because Mark had betrayed me.

Because he had carried fear alone.

Because he had spent his final days believing silence was protection.

My phone rang.

This time it was Noah.

I answered immediately.

“Mom?””

His voice sounded frightened.

“What happened?””

“Grandpa came to the house.””

I stood.

“What?””

“He was outside the school.””

My blood turned cold.

“Did he talk to you?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Noah hesitated.

“He said Dad would want me to know the truth.””

I gripped the phone.

“What truth?””

“He said you were hiding things from us.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She already understood.

Richard was changing tactics.

He couldn't control the documents.

So he was attacking my family.

“What else did he say?””

“He said there was a woman named Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

“He told me Dad was keeping secrets from you.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Richard knew exactly what he was doing.

He wasn't trying to prove Mark was guilty.

He was trying to make us doubt each other.

“Where are you?””

“At the office.””

“Stay there. Don't leave until I arrive.””

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“I know you didn't do anything wrong.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“Thank you, sweetheart.””

After I hung up, Rebecca looked at me.

“We need to move quickly.””

“Because Richard knows about Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“And because he knows Noah will listen.””

“He knows Noah is grieving.””

I picked up the folder.

“Then he picked the wrong child.””

Rebecca smiled faintly.

“Your son is very much his father's son.””

I looked at the photographs again.

A woman named Vanessa had disappeared.

My husband had hidden an investigation from me.

My father-in-law was using my son's grief against him.

And somewhere in all of this was the truth Mark had died trying to protect.

Before leaving, Rebecca stopped me.

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

She handed me another photograph.

This one was different.

It showed Mark.

Not at work.

Not in a meeting.

At the hospital.

Sitting beside a woman.

Vanessa.

But they were not talking.

They were looking at a folder between them.

On the folder was a label.

*Project Lighthouse.*

My heart stopped.

The same word Mark had used in his final instructions.

The lighthouse was still standing.

“Rebecca.””

“Yes?””

“What was Project Lighthouse?””

She looked at me.

“I don't know.””

“Mark didn't tell you?””

“No.””

“Then who does?””

Rebecca picked up her phone.

“I know one person.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Vanessa Reed.””

I looked at the photograph.

“The woman who disappeared.””

May you like

Rebecca nodded.

“And the woman your father-in-law may be trying to find before we do.””
