Chapter 9: The Person Pulling the Strings

I didn’t sleep after that phone call.

Not because I believed Daniel.

I had learned better than that.

But because one sentence stayed in my mind.

Ava wasn’t the person who started this.

I hated admitting it, but it made sense.

Ava was seventeen.

She was capable of making terrible choices.

She was capable of lying.

But the planning?

The financial documents?

The legal preparation?

Those were not things a teenager created alone.

Someone had guided her.

Someone had encouraged her.

Someone had convinced her that destroying my life was acceptable.

The next morning, Rebecca came to my apartment.

She brought coffee and a folder.

“You look exhausted.””

“I found something.””

She placed the folder down.

“What?””

“Information about the person connected to Daniel’s property documents.””

I opened it.

The first page showed a business record.

The second showed financial connections.

Then I saw the name.

I knew it immediately.

The person who had been smiling at the backyard party.

The person who watched Daniel tell me to leave.

The person who had hugged me afterward and said, “I hope things get better.””

My hands tightened around the papers.

“They knew.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Years.””

I looked away.

The betrayal felt endless.

Every time I thought I reached the bottom, there was another layer.

“Why?””

“That’s what we need to find out.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Rebecca pointed to the documents.

“This person didn’t just help Daniel.””

She tapped another page.

“They benefited.””

I stared.

Money.

There it was again.

Everything always came back to money.

But this time, it wasn’t just Daniel protecting himself.

Someone else had a reason to push me out.

Someone else wanted me gone.

That afternoon, I received another message from the unknown number.

“Meet me if you want the final piece.””

I showed Rebecca.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“I need answers.””

“You need safety.””

I understood her concern.

But I also understood something else.

The truth was already moving toward me.

Whether I wanted it or not.

“I’ll meet them in public.””

Rebecca didn’t like it.

But she knew I wasn’t going to stop.

The meeting location was a small park downtown.

Crowded.

Open.

Safe.

I arrived early.

Ten minutes later, someone approached.

And when I saw who it was, I stopped breathing.

Because the person standing in front of me was the last person I expected.

Not Daniel.

Not Ava.

Someone from Daniel’s past.

Someone who had known him longer than I had.

“I’m sorry,” they said.

Those were the first words out of their mouth.

I stared.

“Sorry for what?””

“For letting this happen.””

My anger rose.

“You watched my husband destroy my marriage.””

Their eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was scared.””

I almost walked away.

But then they handed me an envelope.

“I should have given this to you months ago.””

I didn’t take it immediately.

“What is it?””

“The reason Daniel needed you gone.””

I finally accepted it.

Inside was a document.

One page.

One signature.

One detail that made my entire world stop.

Because it revealed something Daniel had hidden from everyone.

Something that explained why he was willing to risk his marriage.

Why Ava was willing to lie.

Why others helped him.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

The person looked at me sadly.

“Daniel wasn’t trying to remove you because he stopped loving you.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

Their answer was barely a whisper.

“Because if you stayed, you would eventually discover what he had done.””

I looked back at the document.

And slowly, the truth became clear.

The secret Daniel was protecting wasn’t about our marriage.

It was much bigger.

Much darker.

And now that I knew...

There was no going back.
