Chapter 27: The Hidden Heir
I thought I had heard every possible surprise.
I was wrong.
When Daniel said I wasn’t the only person named in the trust, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time.
Confusion.
Not anger.
Not betrayal.
Confusion.
Because for years, I believed I understood my family history.
I knew my grandmother.
I knew my parents.
I knew where I came from.
Or at least, I thought I did.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“There was another person.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
“I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
He took a breath.
“But the person behind this plan knew.””
I stared.
“How?””
“Because they had access to old family records.””
My mind raced.
“Who else was named?””
Daniel looked down.
“Your grandmother had a reason.””
“A reason for what?””
“For protecting you.””
I waited.
Then he said:
“She included another beneficiary in case something happened.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your half-sibling.””
The words didn’t make sense.
I just stared.
“What?””
“You have a half-sibling.””
I laughed softly.
“No.””
“Emily.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My grandmother would have told me.””
“Maybe she was trying to protect you.””
I stood.
“From what?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was becoming the most frustrating thing.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone had pieces.
And I was always the last person to receive the truth.
I called Rebecca immediately.
When I told her, she was silent.
“Emily.””
“What?””
“This could explain a lot.””
“How?””
“If another beneficiary exists, then the person behind this may have been trying to manipulate the trust before the transfer.””
I sat down.
“So they weren’t just trying to take my share.””
“No.””
“What were they trying to do?””
Rebecca’s answer was quiet.
“Control everyone involved.””
That sounded exactly like the person I was dealing with.
Control.
Always control.
The next few days became a search for answers.
Family records.
Old documents.
Anything connected to my grandmother.
And eventually, we found a name.
A person I had never heard of.
Someone who had been hidden from me my entire life.
The shocking part wasn’t that this person existed.
It was why my grandmother hid the truth.
Because years earlier, there had been a family conflict.
A betrayal.
A secret.
And someone had tried to take advantage of it.
The person behind Daniel’s plan wasn’t randomly targeting me.
They knew my family.
They knew the weaknesses.
They knew the history.
They had been waiting.
That evening, I met Daniel again.
“You knew about this person.””
He looked guilty.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Before we married.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Again.
Another secret before marriage.
Another piece of information he kept from me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was told not to.””
I froze.
“Who told you?””
He looked at me.
“The person behind everything.””
My hands tightened.
“They controlled you.””
“Yes.””
“But you still listened.””
“Yes.””
At least he admitted it.
That mattered.
Not enough.
But it mattered.
“What is their goal now?””
Daniel looked worried.
“They know you have the evidence.””
“Yes.””
“They know you found the trust documents.””
“Yes.””
“What they don’t know…”
He stopped.
“What?””
“That I kept one copy.””
“Of what?””
“The original plan.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
“Somewhere safe.””
I stared at him.
“Daniel.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“I know you don’t trust me.””
“I don’t.””
“I deserve that.””
He swallowed.
“But if you want to stop them, you need it.””
For the first time, Daniel wasn’t asking me to forgive him.
He was asking me to believe information.
That was different.
I agreed to meet him the next day.
But before I could leave, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No voice.
Just silence.
Then a message appeared.
A picture.
A picture of my apartment.
Taken from outside.
My blood ran cold.
Under the picture were five words.
“Stop searching. Or else.””
I stared at the screen.
Because now the hidden war was no longer hidden.
They had stopped manipulating from the shadows.
They wanted me afraid.
But they forgot something.
Fear was what brought me here.
Fear made me investigate.
Fear made me uncover the truth.
And now...
Fear wasn’t enough to stop me.
Because I had finally discovered the biggest secret of all.
May you like
The person behind everything wasn’t just trying to steal my future.
They were terrified of what I would reveal about theirs.
