Chapter 23: The Truth About How We Met

After my sister left, I couldn’t stop thinking about one sentence.

Since before you met Daniel.

Those words changed everything.

Because I had always believed my marriage began with a chance meeting.

A simple moment.

A normal connection.

Two people finding each other at the right time.

But what if it wasn’t chance?

What if someone had created the opportunity?

I called Rebecca immediately.

“We need to look into how Daniel and I met.””

She understood immediately.

“You think it was planned?””

“I don’t know.””

But deep down, I already suspected.

The next day, we started digging.

Old emails.

Old messages.

Old records.

Everything from before my relationship with Daniel.

At first, nothing appeared.

Then Rebecca found something.

“Emily.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She turned her laptop.

An old message.

From someone connected to Daniel.

The date was years earlier.

Before our first meeting.

The message was simple.

“Everything is arranged.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca kept searching.

Then we found more.

A conversation about introducing Daniel to someone.

A description.

A location.

A timeline.

My timeline.

I sat back.

“This can’t be real.””

Rebecca looked serious.

“It appears to be.””

I covered my face.

Because the hardest part wasn’t discovering Daniel lied.

It was realizing some of my happiest memories might have been built on a foundation of deception.

The first date.

The first time he said he loved me.

The proposal.

The wedding.

How much of it was real?

How much was strategy?

That evening, Daniel came to my apartment.

I almost didn’t open the door.

But I wanted answers.

Real answers.

Not from documents.

Not from recordings.

From him.

When he saw my expression, he knew.

“What did you find?””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

His face changed.

“Knew what?””

“How we met.””

Silence.

That was enough.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

“Emily.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

He looked broken.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“At first?””

He looked away.

“That’s not a denial.””

He sighed.

“I met you because someone introduced us.””

I felt numb.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Finally:

“The person behind everything.””

I stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because they believed you were the answer to my problems.””

I stared at him.

“So I was a solution.””

“No.””

“You just said that.””

“I mean it wasn’t only that.””

I laughed sadly.

“Daniel, you don’t get to tell me what it was and wasn’t.””

He looked down.

“I did care about you.””

“But?””

“But I also knew what being with you could change.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not the whole truth.

But enough.

I looked at him.

“How long did you know?””

“Months.””

“Months?””

“Before we got married.””

I felt sick.

“You married me knowing this?””

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But devastating.

I turned away.

“Leave.””

“Emily.””

“Leave.””

This time, he listened.

After he left, I sat alone.

I cried.

Not because I missed him.

Because I was grieving the person I thought he was.

The next morning, I received a package.

No name.

No address.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

One sentence stood out.

“You are closer than you think.””

I read the letter again.

Then I found something else inside.

A photograph.

An old photograph.

Daniel.

My sister.

And the person behind everything.

Together.

Before I ever met Daniel.

I stared at the image.

May you like

Because the truth was no longer hidden.

It was staring back at me.
