Chapter 14: The Marriage That Was Planned
I left Daniel’s house that evening with the folder.
He didn’t stop me.
That surprised me.
For the first time, Daniel didn’t try to control what happened next.
Maybe because he knew there was nothing left to control.
The truth was no longer hidden.
It was sitting in my hands.
On the drive home, I kept thinking about the first day I met him.
The memory that once felt beautiful.
Now it felt complicated.
I remembered the restaurant.
The flowers.
The way he listened when I spoke.
I remembered thinking:
Finally.
Someone sees me.
But now I wondered.
Had he seen me?
Or had he studied me?
That question hurt more than any argument.
When I arrived home, I placed the folder on the table.
I didn’t open it again immediately.
Because sometimes the truth arrives faster than your heart can accept it.
I called Rebecca.
“I found more.””
“I assumed you did.””
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
I sat down.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because suspicion is not proof.””
She was right.
I knew that.
But emotionally, I wanted someone to warn me.
Someone to say:
Be careful.
Not everyone who loves you is protecting you.
The next morning, Rebecca and I reviewed everything.
The documents created a timeline.
Before we met, Daniel was already struggling.
His business was unstable.
His reputation was important.
And then he met me.
A person with the financial security he desperately needed.
But the most painful discovery was not that he had looked into my life.
It was what happened after.
Because once we married, Daniel’s behavior changed slowly.
Small things.
Things I ignored.
He encouraged me to combine accounts.
He convinced me it was easier if he managed everything.
He told me he was better with finances.
I trusted him.
Because that was what wives did.
They trusted their husbands.
At least, that was what I believed.
But trust without transparency becomes a trap.
By the afternoon, I had a complete picture.
Daniel hadn’t just hidden mistakes.
He had hidden a plan.
And I finally understood why Ava was involved.
She wasn’t just protecting her father.
She was protecting the life he promised her.
Because if I discovered everything, Daniel’s carefully built image would disappear.
And Ava’s future would change too.
That evening, someone knocked on my door.
I expected Daniel.
But it was Ava.
I stared at her.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you?””
She looked exhausted.
“Because I need to tell you something.””
I hesitated.
Then opened the door.
She stepped inside.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Finally, she said:
“My dad wasn’t the only one who knew.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What do you mean?””
“My grandmother knew.””
“I know that.””
“No.””
Ava shook her head.
“She didn’t just know about the money.””
I waited.
“She knew he married you because of what you had.””
The words hurt.
Even though I already suspected.
Hearing them from Ava made it real.
“Why are you telling me this?””
She looked down.
“Because I’m tired of lying.””
I believed that.
At least, I wanted to.
“My dad told me our family would fall apart if you found out.””
I looked at her.
“Our family?””
She nodded.
“He made me believe you were the reason everything was going wrong.””
I said nothing.
“He told me you would leave us when you discovered the truth.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“He was planning to leave me first.””
“I know.””
Ava wiped her eyes.
“I know that now.””
The room was quiet.
Then she said:
“There’s one thing you don’t know.””
“What?””
“My dad had a backup plan.””
I looked at her.
“A backup plan?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He already prepared someone else to blame.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Ava looked at me.
And the answer shocked me.

Because the person Daniel planned to sacrifice...
Was someone who had spent years defending him.
