Chapter 11: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much
After I learned the truth about Daniel’s financial problems, I expected to feel angry.
I did.
But beneath the anger was something else.
Disappointment.
Because I finally understood that the man I married wasn’t just hiding a mistake.
He was protecting a choice.
A mistake happens once.
A choice happens every day someone decides not to tell the truth.
Daniel had hundreds of opportunities.
Every dinner.
Every conversation.
Every night we went to sleep beside each other.
He could have told me.
He could have trusted me.
Instead, he created a story where I became the enemy.
And Ava became his reason.
The next morning, I received a message from Ava.
I stared at her name for a long time.
A part of me didn’t want to open it.
Because no matter what she had done, she had once been a child I cared about.
A child who called me when she had nightmares.
A child who asked me to help her pick out a dress for her first school dance.
A child I loved.
But that child was gone.
I opened the message.
“I need to talk to you.””
I almost ignored it.
Then another message appeared.
“Please.””
I showed Rebecca.
“What do you think?””
She looked thoughtful.
“Do you want to know what she has to say?””
“Yes.””
“Then meet her.””
“Do you think she’s telling the truth?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“I think she knows something you need to hear.””
That afternoon, Ava arrived at a small café.
She looked different.
Not like the confident girl from the backyard.
She looked nervous.
Young.
Almost lost.
She sat across from me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Finally, she whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“Are you?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
I wanted to believe her.
I really did.
But trust was something she had destroyed.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“My dad.””
That answer surprised me.
“Ava…”
“I know what you think.””
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
She wiped her eyes.
“My dad told me everything would be okay.””
“What did he tell you?””
“That you would leave.””
I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
“He wanted me to leave?””
She nodded.
“He said you were getting too close.””
“To what?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The money.””
I stayed silent.
Ava continued.
“He said if you found out, everything would fall apart.””
I looked at her.
“And you helped him.””
Her tears fell.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
But I respected it more than another lie.
“Why?””
“Because I thought I was protecting him.””
“And now?””
She looked away.
“Now I know I was helping him hurt you.””
I sat quietly.
The anger was still there.
But I also saw something I hadn’t expected.
Regret.
Real regret.
“Why accuse me?””
Ava’s face changed.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
“What does that mean?””
She took a shaky breath.
“My dad wanted a reason for you to leave.””
I stared.
“He told me if I said I felt uncomfortable around you, he could make you move out temporarily.””
My stomach turned.
“Temporarily?””
“Yes.””
“Until what?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I already knew.
Until he could complete whatever plan he had.
Until he could protect himself.
Until I was too far away to fight.
“But then why accuse me of pushing you?””
Ava looked ashamed.
“Because my dad said people believe things faster when there’s a victim.””
I felt numb.
The sentence was so cruel.
So calculated.
Ava looked at me.
“I didn’t think he would actually make you leave in front of everyone.””
I looked away.
“But he did.””
“I know.””
“And you smiled.””
Her face collapsed.
“I know.””
The silence between us was painful.
Finally, Ava said something I didn’t expect.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“My dad has another document.””
My heart stopped.
“What document?””
“The one he was most afraid you would find.””
“What is it?””
She looked around nervously.
“I don’t know exactly.””
“That’s not enough.””
“But I know where it is.””
I leaned forward.
“Where?””
Ava swallowed.
“In the house.””
The house.
The place I used to call home.
“The office?””
“No.””
“Then where?””
She lowered her voice.
“My dad keeps a safe.””
I stared at her.
A safe.
Of course.
Daniel had hidden the biggest secret somewhere only he could access.
“What’s inside?””
Ava looked at me.
“I think it’s proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Her answer made my heart race.
“Proof that my dad didn’t make the financial mistake by accident.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
May you like
Ava looked terrified.
“I think he planned it.””
