Chapter 15: The Person Daniel Was Willing to Destroy
I thought I had reached the bottom.
I thought after discovering the money, the documents, and the hidden folder, there could not possibly be another secret.
I was wrong.
Daniel’s entire life seemed built like a house with hidden rooms.
Every time I opened one door, another appeared.
I looked at Ava.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“I don’t know if I should say.””
That immediately made me suspicious.
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, everything changes.””
I stared at her.
“Ava, everything already changed.””
She looked down.
“You’re right.””
She took a deep breath.
“The person he planned to blame…”
She stopped.
Then said the name.
I felt numb.
Because it was someone I never expected.
Someone who had spent years telling me Daniel was a good man.
Someone who had encouraged me to forgive him.
Someone who had watched me leave that backyard.
My mind immediately went back through every conversation.
Every moment.
Every warning I ignored.
They weren’t helping me.
They were managing me.
“Why?””
Ava shook her head.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know enough.””
She nodded.
“My dad said if everything went wrong, he needed someone else to take responsibility.””
I felt disgusted.
“Even someone who helped him?””
“Yes.””
That was Daniel.
That was the truth I had been avoiding.
Daniel didn’t have loyalty.
He had usefulness.
People mattered only when they served his needs.
When they became a problem, they became disposable.
I sat down.
Ava remained standing.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
“But I appreciate that you finally told me the truth.””
She looked surprised.
“Why?””
“Because the truth is the first honest thing you’ve given me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I really did love you.””
That sentence hurt.
Because I believed her.
I believed that somewhere beneath everything, Ava had cared.
She had just chosen fear over honesty.
And fear had consequences.
After she left, I called Rebecca.
“We need to move faster.””
“What happened?””
I explained.
When I finished, Rebecca was quiet.
“Emily.””
“What?””
“You understand what this means, right?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel may not just be protecting himself.””
“I know.””
“He may be preparing for everything to collapse.””
I looked at the documents.
The folder.
The evidence.
The timeline.
“What do we do?””
“We protect you.””
That night, I received another message from Daniel.
Not a call.
Not an apology.
A message.
“You don’t understand what you’re destroying.””
I stared at the words.
Then I replied:
“No, Daniel.””
I waited.
“I finally understand what you were willing to destroy.””
He didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
Then:
“You think you’re the victim.””
I read the sentence twice.
Because it revealed everything.
Even now.
After everything.
Daniel still believed the problem was my reaction.
Not his actions.
I typed one final response.
“I was your wife.””
Then:
“You treated me like a problem.””
I put my phone down.
The next morning, Rebecca called.
“We have a problem.””
My heart sank.
“What happened?””
“Daniel filed something.””
“What?””
“A legal claim.””
I stood still.
“What kind of claim?””
“He’s trying to argue that the documents you found were obtained improperly.””
I almost laughed.
Of course.
Instead of answering the truth, he was attacking the evidence.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he knows we have enough to hurt him.””
I looked out the window.
The city was waking up.
People were starting their normal days.
But my life had become a battle over truth.
“Can he win?””
Rebecca paused.
“Not if we move carefully.””
I nodded.
Then I saw something outside.
A black car parked across the street.
Someone sitting inside.
Watching my apartment.
My heart started beating faster.
“Rebecca.””
“What?””
“I think someone is watching me.””
There was silence.
Then her voice became serious.
“Emily, lock your doors.””
I looked at the car.
And for the first time since leaving Daniel...
I wondered if exposing the truth would be the hardest part.
Because now that Daniel knew I had found everything...
He was no longer trying to hide the past.
May you like
He was trying to protect his future.
And I had no idea what he was willing to do next.
