Chapter 7: The Birth Records That Were Never Meant to Be Found

Matteo Varric had spent his entire life believing he knew where he came from.

The Varric name had always been a story told before he entered a room.

Power.

Money.

Influence.

Legacy.

People looked at the family and saw strength.

But Matteo had learned a long time ago that powerful families were built on more than success.

They were built on secrets.

And the most dangerous secrets were the ones nobody remembered hiding.

He stood in the private study on the third floor of the mansion, staring at the documents Adrian had placed on the desk.

Elena Graves.

Twenty-seven years ago.

Personal assistant to his father.

Accused of stealing original birth records.

Then dismissed.

The official story was simple.

Too simple.

Matteo had lived long enough to know that simple stories were often the ones created to hide complicated truths.

Behind him, Liana stood silently.

She had not spoken since Adrian revealed the connection.

She looked different now.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was searching through memories.

Trying to rebuild a past she thought she understood.

“My mother worked for your family?””

Her voice sounded distant.

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

“Family archives.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Matteo looked at her.

Because he knew the answer before anyone said it.

Because someone wanted the information buried.

But saying that aloud made everything feel more dangerous.

“I grew up in this house,” Matteo said.

“Then you must have known.””

“I didn’t.””

Liana looked surprised.

“You didn’t?””

“No.””

“How is that possible?””

Matteo’s expression darkened.

“Because my father controlled what people knew.””

The sentence carried more meaning than he wanted.

His father had been a complicated man.

A powerful man.

A man who believed information belonged only to those strong enough to control it.

Matteo had spent years separating himself from him.

Promising he would never become that kind of person.

But now he wondered how much of his father’s world had survived without him knowing.

“Find the original files,” Matteo ordered.

Adrian nodded.

“We already searched the archives.””

“And?””

“Nothing.””

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

“Nothing?””

“The files were removed years ago.””

“By who?””

“We’re investigating.””

“No.””

Matteo walked toward the desk.

“Not investigating.””

He opened the folder.

“Finding.””

The difference was clear.

Investigation took time.

Finding meant there was a person responsible.

And Matteo had no patience left.

Liana looked at the documents.

“My mother wasn’t a thief.””

Matteo glanced at her.

“I didn’t say she was.””

“But you thought it.””

He did not answer.

Because she was right.

For a moment, he had.

Not because he believed Elena was guilty.

Because that was what the records said.

And records were supposed to tell the truth.

But lately, everything he trusted had been questioned.

“My mother spent her whole life trying to prove she wasn’t what they called her.””

Her voice became quieter.

“She hated being accused of something she didn’t do.””

Matteo looked at her.

“Did she ever mention my father?””

Liana hesitated.

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

“That he was afraid.””

Matteo frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

“I don’t know.””

Again.

That answer.

But this time, Matteo understood.

Liana was not hiding information.

She was carrying incomplete pieces.

Just like him.

“She said your father was not the person people thought he was.””

Matteo leaned against the desk.

“Everyone says that after someone dies.””

“She didn’t mean he was secretly kind.””

The honesty surprised him.

“She said he made mistakes.””

Matteo looked away.

Because that sounded exactly like his father.

A man who believed the ends justified everything.

A man who protected the family name even when protecting it destroyed people.

“What mistake?””

Liana looked at the photograph.

“I think it involved Isabella.””

The room became silent.

A knock interrupted them.

A guard entered.

“Sir.””

Matteo looked up.

“What?””

“We found something in the east wing.””

“What?””

The guard held a small envelope.

“Hidden behind the wall panel.””

Matteo immediately took it.

The envelope was old.

Yellowed.

But there was something written on the front.

One name.

Isabella.

Liana inhaled sharply.

Matteo noticed.

“You recognize it?””

“No.””

“But?””

“She used that handwriting.””

Matteo opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

No date.

No explanation.

Only a message.

He read the first line.

And immediately felt his stomach tighten.

*If you are reading this, then Matteo finally knows the truth about Elena Graves.*

He stopped.

Liana looked at him.

“What does it say?””

Matteo continued.

*I wanted to tell you myself. I wanted to believe I had more time.*

His hand tightened around the paper.

*But if someone finds this before I can explain, remember one thing: Liana Graves is not the danger. She is the person who can save Nico.*

Matteo looked up.

Liana froze.

The message continued.

*You will wonder why I trusted her. You will wonder why our son knows her. You will wonder why your father erased her family from ours.*

Matteo stopped breathing.

Your father.

Not someone else.

Not a stranger.

His father.

The next sentence was shorter.

More frightening.

*The truth about Nico’s birth is the truth about the Varric family.*

The page ended there.

No signature.

No goodbye.

Nothing else.

Matteo stared at the empty space beneath the final sentence.

“She knew.””

His voice was barely audible.

“She knew everything.””

Liana stepped closer.

“What?””

“My father.””

The word felt heavy.

“My father was involved.””

Adrian remained silent.

Because he knew better than to interrupt.

Matteo had spent years believing his father’s biggest mistake was arrogance.

Maybe it was something else.

Maybe it was something much darker.

The study door suddenly opened.

A voice came from the entrance.

“Matteo.””

Everyone turned.

Matteo’s mother stood there.

Clara Varric.

Elegant.

Composed.

A woman who had survived decades beside powerful men by mastering the art of silence.

But tonight, silence was gone.

Because her face had changed.

She had seen the paper.

And she knew.

Matteo slowly turned.

“How long have you known?””

Clara said nothing.

That was answer enough.

“Mother.””

Her eyes moved toward Liana.

Then toward the photograph.

Then back to Matteo.

“You shouldn’t have found this.””

The words were quiet.

But they confirmed everything.

Matteo felt something inside him break.

Not because she knew.

Because she had known and let him suffer.

“For seven months,” he said.

Clara looked away.

“For seven months, I thought my wife’s death was an accident.””

“Matteo…”

“I thought I failed her.””

His voice grew colder.

“I blamed myself.””

Clara’s expression softened.

“Because that’s what Isabella wanted.””

The room froze.

“What?””

“She wanted you to blame yourself.””

Matteo stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if you hated yourself, you wouldn’t look for the truth.””

The answer made no sense.

Then suddenly, it did.

Isabella had not only been leaving clues.

She had been hiding them from someone.

Someone who was still alive.

“Who were you protecting?””

Clara’s eyes filled with sadness.

“My son.””

The answer stunned him.

“You?””

“No.””

She looked toward Nico’s photograph.

“I was protecting you.””

Matteo shook his head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“It does.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“You knew Elena Graves. You knew Isabella was afraid. You knew about Nico’s birth records.””

Clara closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

The words hung there.

Matteo laughed softly.

Not with amusement.

With disbelief.

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

“By letting me believe my wife died because of me?””

Clara looked broken.

“I had no choice.””

“Everyone says that.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

Finally, Clara whispered:

“Your father was not the only person hiding something.””

Matteo’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Clara looked at Liana.

And for the first time, Matteo saw fear in his mother’s eyes.

Real fear.

“She was never just Isabella’s sister.””

Everyone froze.

Liana looked confused.

“What?””

Clara took a breath.

“The truth about your son…”

Her voice trembled.

“Is that Nico is connected to a secret the Varric family has protected for almost thirty years.””

Matteo stepped forward.

“What secret?””

Clara looked at him.

Then at Liana.

Then at the sleeping child visible through the open nursery door.

“The secret of who was supposed to inherit everything.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the danger of that sentence.

This was not just about a hidden birth record.

Not just about Isabella.

Not just about Elena Graves.

It was about power.

Inheritance.

A legacy worth killing for.

And somewhere in the mansion, someone who had been listening already knew Matteo had finally opened the door.

The only question was whether Matteo would discover the truth before that person closed it forever.
