Chapter 5: The Letter Written After Death

Matteo Varric had built his entire life around facts.

Facts were clean.

Facts were controllable.

Facts did not betray you.

A person could lie.

A person could pretend.

A person could smile while planning your destruction.

But facts remained.

Numbers.

Records.

Evidence.

Truth.

That was why the piece of paper in his hand felt impossible.

Because the fact was simple.

Isabella Varric was dead.

And dead people did not write letters.

The nursery was silent except for Nico’s soft breathing.

The baby had stopped crying the moment Matteo picked up the note.

Almost as if he understood that whatever was written on that paper mattered.

Matteo stared at the handwriting.

He knew it.

The slight curve of the letters.

The way Isabella crossed her t’s too high.

The way she pressed harder on certain words when she was emotional.

He had seen that handwriting thousands of times.

On grocery lists.

On birthday cards.

On notes she left beside his coffee when he worked too late.

This was hers.

Impossible.

But hers.

“Where did you find this?””

His voice was low.

Liana stood beside the crib, watching him carefully.

“It was under the crib.””

“Did you put it there?””

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Hurt.

“No.””

“Did anyone else enter this room?””

“I don’t know.””

Matteo looked at the cameras.

Then at the note.

Then back at Liana.

The problem was that everyone had become a possibility.

And Matteo hated that.

For years, he had trusted his instincts.

Tonight, his instincts were fighting each other.

One part of him wanted to believe Liana.

Another part reminded him that believing the wrong person could cost Nico his life.

“Adrian.””

His security chief stepped forward.

“Yes.””

“Find out when this room was accessed.””

Adrian nodded.

“Immediately.””

“And nobody touches anything.””

The guards moved.

Matteo carefully folded the paper.

Not because he wanted to protect the note.

Because he wanted to protect the evidence.

“Matteo.””

Liana’s voice stopped him.

He looked at her.

She hesitated.

“There’s something else.””

His expression hardened.

“What?””

“Isabella told me about this.””

The room froze.

“What do you mean?””

“The letter.””

“You knew about it?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Liana looked at Nico.

“She told me she had prepared something.””

Matteo stared.

“When?””

“Before she died.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know where it was.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You knew there was a letter hidden somewhere?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I didn’t know if it still existed.””

Matteo stepped closer.

“You’re giving me pieces of information one at a time.””

Liana looked down.

“I’m telling you what I remember.””

“Convenient.””

The word came out colder than he intended.

But Liana accepted it.

She nodded slowly.

“I understand why you don’t trust me.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes met his.

“You lost your wife because someone betrayed her.””

The words struck.

“She was afraid.””

Matteo went still.

“Afraid of what?””

“Of leaving you alone.””

A strange emotion crossed his face.

“What?””

“She told me you were strong when the world attacked you.””

Liana’s voice softened.

“But she was afraid you wouldn’t survive losing her.””

Matteo looked away.

Nobody knew that.

Nobody except Isabella.

Everyone saw Matteo Varric as untouchable.

A man without weaknesses.

A man who could walk through fire and never burn.

But Isabella knew the truth.

She knew there were parts of him that were not protected by money or power.

She knew losing her would destroy him.

And she had been right.

“You said she prepared the letter.””

“Yes.””

“What else did she say?””

Liana hesitated.

“Tell me.””

“She said if something happened to her, you would blame yourself.””

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

“She was wrong.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“She wasn’t.””

His eyes moved toward her.

Liana continued.

“She said you would think you failed her.””

Silence.

Because again, she was right.

Matteo had replayed that night thousands of times.

Every decision.

Every call.

Every moment.

What if he had gone with her?

What if he had noticed something?

What if he had protected her better?

The questions never stopped.

They only changed shape.

“She wanted you to know one thing.””

“What?””

“That she didn’t blame you.””

For a moment, Matteo said nothing.

Then he turned away.

Because hearing that hurt more than anger would have.

A sound came from the hallway.

Adrian returned.

His face was serious.

“Boss.””

Matteo immediately focused.

“What did you find?””

“The note wasn’t placed there tonight.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“Based on the dust pattern and the position under the crib, it was hidden there months ago.””

“How many months?””

“Approximately seven.””

Matteo felt the air leave his lungs.

Seven months.

The same amount of time since Isabella died.

The same amount of time since the accident.

The same amount of time since his life changed.

“Impossible,” Matteo whispered.

Adrian looked at him.

“I know.””

“No.””

Matteo shook his head.

“If she hid it seven months ago…”

He looked at the paper.

“Then someone moved it tonight.””

That was the only explanation.

Someone had known.

Someone had gone into the nursery.

Someone had removed the note from its hiding place.

And then someone had placed it where they knew Matteo would find it.

“Why?””

Liana whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

“Why would someone reveal it?””

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

That was the right question.

If someone wanted to hide the truth, they would hide the letter forever.

Unless…

“This wasn’t meant to be found.””

The room became silent.

“What do you mean?”” Adrian asked.

Matteo looked at the crib.

“They didn’t reveal it.””

His voice lowered.

“They were looking for it.””

A chill moved through the room.

Someone had entered the nursery searching for Isabella’s secret.

They had failed.

Because Matteo found it first.

“Search the room.””

The guards moved immediately.

Every corner.

Every shelf.

Every drawer.

Every piece of furniture.

Minutes passed.

Then one guard stopped.

“Sir.””

Matteo turned.

The guard held something small.

A tiny black device.

A listening transmitter.

Liana covered her mouth.

Matteo stared.

Someone had been listening.

Not just watching.

Listening.

“How long?””

The guard examined it.

“It was activated recently.””

“How recently?””

“Tonight.””

Matteo’s expression became dangerous.

Someone had heard everything.

The conversation with Liana.

The recording.

The letter.

Everything.

“Find who installed it.””

“We’re checking.””

“Now.””

The guard nodded.

Matteo walked toward the window.

Outside, the estate was dark.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

A perfect illusion.

Because behind those walls was someone who had been close enough to invade his home.

Close enough to watch his son.

Close enough to hear his wife’s final message.

And Matteo realized something terrifying.

The enemy was not trying to get inside.

The enemy was already inside.

“Matteo.””

Liana’s voice was quiet.

He turned.

She was holding Nico.

The baby was awake.

Looking at him.

Not crying.

Just watching.

For some reason, that hurt more.

Because Nico had lost Isabella.

And Matteo had spent months trying to become enough for both parents.

But tonight, he discovered something.

Nico had remembered something.

Someone.

Liana.

“Why does he know you?””

Liana looked at the baby.

Then at Matteo.

“I told you.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

Not with anger.

With exhaustion.

“You told me Isabella asked you to protect him.””

“Yes.””

“But that doesn’t explain this.””

He stepped closer.

“My son looked at you like he was waiting for you.””

Liana’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know why.””

“You do.””

“No.””

“Liana.””

She looked away.

That was enough.

Matteo saw the hesitation.

The secret.

“Tell me.””

Her lips trembled.

“I can’t.””

The answer shocked him.

“You can’t?””

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because Isabella made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

Liana looked at Nico.

Then whispered:

“To tell you only when you were ready to hear the truth.””

Matteo stared.

“And who decides when I’m ready?””

Liana looked at him.

“You will.””

Before Matteo could respond, every light in the nursery suddenly went out.

The cameras shut down.

The monitors outside the room went black.

For three seconds, there was only darkness.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Someone walking away.

Matteo moved instantly.

The guards rushed after him.

But when they reached the corridor, nobody was there.

Only one thing remained.

A photograph placed on the floor.

Matteo picked it up.

And his blood turned cold.

It was a picture of Isabella.

Holding newborn Nico.

Standing beside a woman.

A woman Matteo had never seen.

But Liana recognized her immediately.

Because the woman in the photograph was not a stranger.

She was Liana’s mother.

May you like

And written on the back of the photograph were five words:

*The truth died with her too.*
