Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden in the Security Footage
The security room beneath the Varric estate had no windows.
No sunlight.
No distractions.
Only screens.
Rows of monitors covered the walls, each one showing a different corner of the mansion. The entrance gates. The gardens.
The corridors. The nursery.
Matteo Varric had designed the system himself.
Every person who entered his home was recorded.
Every movement was tracked.
Every possible threat was documented.
People called it paranoia.
Matteo called it survival.
A man like him did not get to live peacefully.
Peace was something other people earned.
Men like Matteo bought time.
They bought protection.
They bought silence.
But tonight, sitting in front of those screens, Matteo realized there was one thing his security system had failed to protect him from.
The truth.
Adrian Moretti stood beside the control desk, his arms crossed.
He had been Matteo’s most trusted security chief for almost fifteen years.
Adrian had seen Matteo survive betrayals that would have destroyed other men.
He had watched him build an empire from nothing.
He had watched enemies disappear.
Friends become enemies.
Alliances collapse.
But he had never seen Matteo look the way he looked now.
Confused.
Not angry.
Not calculating.
Confused.
And that bothered Adrian more than anything.
“Play it,” Matteo ordered.
The technician sitting at the desk nodded.
The footage appeared on the largest screen.
The timestamp showed three weeks earlier.
The night everything changed.
The nursery appeared empty.
The expensive room looked exactly as it always did.
Perfect.
Silent.
Almost lifeless.
Then the door opened.
Matteo leaned forward.
A woman entered.
His heart stopped.
Isabella.
His wife.
For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.
Even after seven months, seeing her face still felt impossible.
She walked into the nursery carrying something.
A small blanket.
A smile touched her lips.
A real smile.
Not the carefully controlled expression she wore at charity events or family dinners.
A mother’s smile.
Matteo stared.
He had watched thousands of videos in his life.
He had studied people.
Their habits.
Their lies.
Their weaknesses.
But he had never watched this one.
Because after Isabella died, he had buried everything connected to her.
Photos.
Clothes.
Memories.
He had convinced himself that looking backward would destroy him.
Now he wished he had looked sooner.
“Stop.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What?””
“Zoom in.””
The technician enlarged the image.
Isabella was standing beside the crib.
But she was not alone.
There was someone else.
A woman.
The quality was poor.
The person’s face was hidden.
Matteo’s jaw tightened.
“Who is that?””
“We don’t know.””
“You reviewed this footage?””
Adrian hesitated.
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“Because the woman disappears before we can identify her.””
Matteo looked back at the screen.
The mystery woman stood close to Isabella.
Too close.
Like someone trusted.
Like someone familiar.
Isabella turned toward her.
They spoke.
No audio.
But their expressions were clear.
This was not a stranger.
This was a conversation between two people who knew each other.
Then something happened.
The mystery woman stepped closer to the crib.
She looked down at Nico.
Even through the poor camera quality, Matteo could see emotion on her face.
Pain.
The same expression Liana had worn upstairs.
Matteo’s hands slowly curled into fists.
“Continue.””
The footage moved forward.
The mystery woman reached toward Nico.
Then the screen froze.
A warning appeared.
“Corrupted file.””
The room went silent.
Matteo slowly turned.
“What?””
“The file was damaged.””
“Damaged?””
“Yes.””
“Accidentally?””
No one answered.
Matteo didn’t need an answer.
He already knew.
Nothing in his world happened accidentally.
“Recover it.””
“We tried.””
“Try again.””
“Matteo—”
“Try again.””
His voice was quiet.
That was always more dangerous than shouting.
Adrian nodded.
The technician immediately began working.
Matteo stared at the frozen image.
Isabella.
Another woman.
His son.
A secret.
Three weeks ago.
The same time Nico began screaming.
The same time Liana Graves appeared at his estate.
A coincidence.
He did not believe in coincidences.
“Find out who she is.””
Adrian looked at him.
“The woman in the footage?””
“Yes.””
“And Liana?””
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
“Yes.””
“Do you think they’re connected?””
Matteo looked at the screen.
“I think I’ve been missing something for seven months.””
The words felt strange.
Because Matteo Varric hated admitting he missed anything.
His entire life depended on knowing more than everyone else.
Information was power.
But grief had made him blind.
He had spent seven months trying to survive losing Isabella.
Maybe during that time, someone had been moving pieces around him.
Someone had been hiding the truth.
Someone had been watching his son.
A sound came from the hallway.
Matteo turned.
The door opened.
One of the guards stepped inside.
“Sir.””
“What?””
“The maid.””
Matteo’s expression hardened.
“What about her?””
“She left the nursery.””
“Where is she?””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“She went to the east wing.””
Matteo immediately stood.
“The east wing is restricted.””
“Yes.””
“Why would she go there?””
The guard swallowed.
“That’s what we don’t know.””
The answer was enough.
Matteo walked out.
Fast.
The guards followed.
He moved through the mansion like a storm.
Every employee who saw him stepped aside.
Nobody wanted to be in his way.
Not because Matteo was cruel.
Because everyone knew something was wrong.
And when something threatened Matteo Varric’s family, there was no person alive who wanted to stand nearby.
The east wing was the oldest part of the mansion.
It had belonged to Matteo’s grandfather.
Most of it had been closed after Isabella’s death.
Too many memories.
Too much history.
Too many things Matteo refused to touch.
When he reached the hallway, he saw her.
Liana stood in front of an old wooden door.
Her hand was resting against the handle.
She looked like someone who had been caught between running away and opening a door she had spent months searching for.
Matteo stopped.
“Explain.””
Liana turned.
The color drained from her face.
“I…”
“Why are you here?””
“I was looking for something.””
“What?””
She said nothing.
Matteo stepped closer.
“Liana.””
Her eyes moved past him.
Toward the guards.
Toward the cameras.
Then back to him.
“I need to know if you still have it.””
His expression changed.
“Have what?””
She looked at the door.
“Something Isabella left behind.””
The name hit him like a physical blow.
“Why would my wife leave something for you?””
Liana closed her eyes.
A painful silence followed.
Then she whispered:
“Because she knew she was going to die.””
The hallway became completely still.
Even the guards seemed frozen.
Matteo stared at her.
“What did you say?””
Liana opened her eyes.
“I didn’t want to tell you like this.””
“Tell me what?””
“That Isabella wasn’t just your wife.””
His voice became colder.
“Choose your next words carefully.””
“She was my sister.””
For a moment, Matteo heard nothing.
Not the guards.
Not the cameras.
Not the sound of his own breathing.
Nothing.
The woman standing in front of him had just changed the entire meaning of his life.
“My wife had no sister.””
“She did.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
Matteo studied her face.
Searching.
Looking for the deception.
But he found something worse.
Pain.
Real pain.
“How?””
Liana looked down.
“My mother gave Isabella up when she was a baby.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know what you were told.””
“And what was I told?””
“That Isabella was an only child.””
Matteo’s expression darkened.
“Because she was.””
“No.””
Liana shook her head.
“Because someone wanted everyone to believe she was.””
The words echoed.
Someone.
Not an accident.
Not a mistake.
Someone.
Matteo took another step forward.
“Why didn’t Isabella tell me?””
Liana’s face broke slightly.
“Because she was scared.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“She was scared of what would happen if you knew the truth.””
Matteo looked away.
His mind moved faster than his emotions.
Every possibility.
Every hidden detail.
Every unexplained event.
Isabella’s death.
Nico’s behavior.
The damaged footage.
Liana’s arrival.
Everything connected.
But one thing bothered him.
“You said she was your sister.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you come here as a maid?””
Liana looked at him.
“Because I didn’t come here for money.””
“Then why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Isabella asked me to protect her son.””
The hallway went silent.
Matteo felt something cold settle inside him.
“When?””
“Two days before she died.””
“You spoke to her?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Liana hesitated.
And Matteo immediately noticed.
“Where?””
“She came to see me.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew someone was watching her.””
Matteo’s face changed.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Liana.””
“I don’t know!””
Her voice cracked.
For the first time, the calm mask disappeared.
“I don’t know who was following her. I don’t know who wanted her afraid. I don’t know why she trusted me with this.””
She wiped away a tear.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
“She loved Nico more than anything in the world.””
Matteo looked toward the nursery.
His son.
The child who had lost his mother.
The child who somehow recognized a woman connected to her.
“What did she ask you to do?””
Liana was silent.
Then she reached into the pocket of her maid uniform.
She pulled out a small object.
A necklace.
Matteo recognized it instantly.
His blood ran cold.
Because he had seen that necklace before.
Isabella wore it every day.
Until the night she died.
Liana held it carefully.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I had to give this to you.””
Matteo stared at the necklace.
“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””
Liana looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“Because I wasn’t sure you would believe me.””
“And now?””
She looked back toward the nursery.
“Now your son answered the question for me.””
Matteo said nothing.
Because for the first time in seven months, he realized his wife had left behind more than memories.
She had left behind a warning.

And somewhere inside that necklace was the truth about why Isabella died.
And why his nine-month-old son had recognized a woman he was never supposed to know.
