Chapter 13: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead
For one impossible second, Matteo Varric forgot how to breathe.
Isabella.
The name itself was enough to break the world around him.
Because names belonged to memories.
To photographs.
To graves.
Not to whispered reports from guards standing outside a nursery.
Not to the present.
Not to now.
“Say it again.””
His voice was barely recognizable.
The guard looked confused.
“Sir?””
“Say exactly what you saw.””
The guard swallowed.
“A woman was inside the nursery.””
“Who?””
“I thought it was Mrs. Varric.””
Matteo stepped forward.
“You thought?””
The guard lowered his eyes.
“I saw her from behind. The hair. The clothes. The way she was standing.””
“Where is she now?””
The guard hesitated.
“She left.””
Matteo’s expression changed.
“Left?””
“Yes.””
“Through where?””
“Nobody saw her exit.””
The room went silent.
Nobody saw her leave.
A person appeared in a locked mansion.
Stood beside his son.
Then disappeared.
The same mansion where someone had been hiding secrets for years.
The same mansion where his dead wife had left messages from beyond the grave.
Matteo turned toward Adrian.
“Show me.””
They moved quickly.
No one spoke.
Liana followed behind them.
She looked pale.
Not because she believed Isabella was alive.
Because some part of her knew this was connected.
Everything was connected.
The nursery cameras were displayed on the security monitor.
Adrian rewound the footage.
“Time?””
“Twenty-three minutes ago.””
The screen showed an empty nursery.
Then static.
Matteo frowned.
“Why is there interference?””
“We’re checking.””
The screen flickered.
Then returned.
A figure appeared.
A woman.
Standing beside Nico’s crib.
Matteo stopped moving.
Even through the poor quality.
Even through the darkness.
He knew.
The way she stood.
The way she tilted her head.
The way one hand rested gently on the crib.
It was Isabella.
His Isabella.
The woman who had held his son.
The woman who had laughed in his kitchen.
The woman who had promised they would grow old together.
The woman he buried.
“Enhance.””
Adrian did.
The image became clearer.
Matteo stared.
Then his expression changed.
Something was wrong.
Something about the image.
Liana noticed.
“What?””
He did not answer.
“Matteo?””
He stepped closer.
“That’s not possible.””
“What?””
He pointed at the screen.
“The necklace.””
Liana looked.
The woman wore a necklace.
A small silver pendant.
Her face was hidden.
But the necklace was visible.
Liana covered her mouth.
“What?””
Matteo looked at her.
“You recognize it.””
She nodded slowly.
“My mother had one.””
The room became silent.
“The same one?””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Boss?””
Matteo stared at the screen.
The necklace.
The connection.
The impossible return.
“This isn’t Isabella.””
Liana looked shocked.
“Then who is it?””
Matteo did not answer.
Because he already knew.
Or at least he feared he knew.
“Find out where Isabella’s body was buried.””
Adrian looked surprised.
“Sir?””
“Now.””
The cemetery was quiet before sunrise.
A place where secrets should have stayed buried.
Matteo stood in front of Isabella’s grave.
Liana beside him.
Adrian several steps behind.
The air was cold.
The world felt unreal.
Matteo stared at the stone.
The name.
The dates.
The proof everyone accepted.
Isabella Varric.
Beloved wife.
Mother.
Gone.
But now he wondered.
What exactly had they buried?
“Open it.””
Liana looked at him.
“Matteo…”
“I need to know.””
Adrian nodded to the workers.
The process began.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood what this meant.
If Isabella’s body was not there…
Then the entire story of her death changed.
Minutes passed.
Then one worker stepped back.
His face was confused.
“Sir…”
Matteo moved forward.
“What?””
The worker looked at the grave.
“There’s a problem.””
“What problem?””
The worker swallowed.
“The coffin is empty.””
Silence.
No one reacted.
Not immediately.
Because the human mind needed time to accept certain things.
An empty grave.
A dead woman who appeared on camera.
A secret family history built on lies.
Everything Matteo believed had collapsed.
Again.
Liana whispered:
“She was alive.””
Matteo looked at her.
“No.””
“Then what?””
He stared at the empty grave.
“I don’t know.””
And that was the first time in his life Matteo Varric admitted those words without anger.
He truly did not know.
Back at the mansion, Clara was waiting.
When Matteo entered, she saw his face.
And she knew.
“You found out.””
Matteo stopped.
“You knew.””
Clara looked down.
“Not everything.””
“But enough.””
“Yes.””
His anger returned.
“You let me bury an empty coffin.””
Clara closed her eyes.
“I had no choice.””
“There it is again.””
His voice shook.
“That sentence.””
“Matteo…”
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You watched me break.””
Clara’s eyes filled.
“You watched me lose my wife.””
“I watched you survive.””
“I survived because I believed she was gone.””
Clara whispered:
“She wanted you to.””
Matteo froze.
“What?””
Clara looked toward the window.
“Isabella wasn’t supposed to disappear.””
“What does that mean?””
“She was supposed to run.””
“Run from who?””
“From the people trying to take Nico.””
“Then why did she die?””
Clara hesitated.
“Because someone betrayed her.””
The answer was quiet.
“Who?””
Clara looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
For once, Matteo believed her.
Because Clara looked genuinely afraid.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
“Where is she?””
“I don’t know.””
“Mother.””
“I swear.””
Matteo studied her.
Then:
“Who was in the nursery?””
Clara went still.
“I don’t know.””
“But you know who it could be.””
Clara did not answer.
And Matteo saw it.
Fear.
Recognition.
“Tell me.””
Clara whispered:
“Her sister.””
Liana froze.
“What?””
Clara looked at her.
“Isabella’s twin.””
The words changed everything.
Again.
Liana stepped back.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“But I thought…”
“We were wrong.””
Matteo looked at Clara.
“Wrong about what?””
Clara’s voice trembled.
“About which daughter Elena lost.””
Nobody spoke.
The room felt colder.
“The records were changed.””
“By who?””
Clara looked at the floor.
“Your grandfather.””
Matteo closed his eyes.
The same name.
The same source.
Every secret led back generations.
“Explain.””
Clara took a breath.
“When Elena gave birth, there were two girls.””
“Yes.””
“Your grandfather believed one child would strengthen the family.””
“And the other?””
“She was supposed to disappear.””
Liana’s face went pale.
“Me?””
Clara shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone stopped.
“No?””
Clara looked at her.
“You were not the child who disappeared.””
Matteo frowned.
“Then who?””
Clara looked toward the staircase.
Toward the nursery.
Toward the child sleeping upstairs.
“The child everyone thought was dead.””
The answer came slowly.
Then suddenly.
Matteo understood.
“No.””
Clara nodded.
“Isabella.””
Silence.
Liana stared.
“If Isabella wasn’t Elena’s daughter…”
“She was.””
“Then what?””
Clara looked at Matteo.
“She wasn’t the twin who stayed.””
The room went still.
Matteo felt something terrible approaching.
A truth worse than all the others.
“Then who was raised as Isabella?””
Clara whispered:
“A replacement.””
Nobody moved.
The woman he loved.
The woman he married.
The mother of his child.
A woman who carried secrets even she might not have known.
Matteo’s voice became almost empty.
“Where is the real Isabella?””
Clara looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“But someone does.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Before Clara could answer, every light in the mansion suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Security alarms began screaming.
Adrian reached for his weapon.
Then came a sound from upstairs.
A baby crying.
Nico.
Matteo ran.
Everyone followed.
The nursery door was open.
The room was empty.
Except for one thing.
A letter placed beside Nico’s crib.
Matteo picked it up.
The handwriting made his heart stop.
Isabella’s.
The letter contained only one sentence.
*Matteo, if you are reading this, then the woman you buried was never me.*
His hands trembled.
Below it was another line.
*The real Isabella is coming home.*
And beneath that…
A name.
A name Matteo had never heard before.
May you like
A name that would change everything.
*Elena Varric.*
