Chapter 3: The Necklace That Held Isabella’s Last Warning
Matteo Varric had faced men who pointed weapons at his head without blinking.
He had sat across from enemies who promised to destroy everything he built.
He had watched people he trusted turn against him.
None of those moments had shaken him the way a small silver necklace resting in Liana Graves’s palm did.
Because Matteo knew that necklace.
He knew every detail.
The thin chain.
The small pendant shaped like a crescent moon.
The tiny scratch on the side that Isabella always said gave it character.
He had bought it for her on their first anniversary.
A simple gift.
Nothing like the diamonds and expensive jewelry people expected a woman married to Matteo Varric to wear.
Isabella had loved it because it came from him before he became the man everyone feared.
Before the empire.
Before the danger.
Before every room they entered became filled with people watching their every move.
“You kept it,” Matteo said quietly.
Liana looked down at the necklace.
“She gave it to me.””
“When?””
“The last time I saw her.””
“When was that?””
Her fingers closed around the pendant.
“Two days before she died.””
Matteo’s jaw tightened.
Two days.
Two days before Isabella’s car crashed.
Two days before doctors told him there was nothing they could do.
Two days before his world became a place he no longer recognized.
“You’re telling me my wife met with you before she died, gave you this necklace, and asked you to protect my son.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
Liana lowered her eyes.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After the funeral.””
Matteo’s expression hardened.
“Explain.””
“I came here.””
The answer surprised him.
“You came to this house?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night after Isabella was buried.””
Matteo stared at her.
That night.
The night he had locked himself in his office.
The night he had refused to see anyone.
The night he had ignored every call, every message, every person who tried to tell him how to grieve.
“You were here?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“And your security team wouldn’t let me inside.””
Matteo looked toward the guards standing behind him.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
But their faces changed.
They remembered.
Of course they remembered.
Every person who tried to approach Matteo after Isabella’s death had been turned away.
At the time, Matteo had ordered it himself.
No visitors.
No meetings.
No exceptions.
He had wanted silence.
He had not realized silence could become a weapon.
“You should have tried again,” he said.
Liana looked at him.
A painful smile appeared.
“You lost your wife.””
The words were gentle.
Not accusing.
“That night, you looked like a man who didn’t want to be saved.””
Matteo went still.
Because she was right.
And he hated that she was right.
“I came back three times,” Liana continued.
“Why?””
“Because Isabella asked me to.””
“And you gave up?””
“No.””
Her eyes moved toward the nursery.
“I stayed close.””
Matteo’s gaze sharpened.
“You stayed close?””
“I found work here.””
The realization arrived slowly.
“You planned this.””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
“I didn’t plan anything.””
“Liana.””
“I didn’t know how else to keep my promise.””
Her voice became softer.
“I had no money. No power. No way to get near Nico. But I knew the Varric estate always needed workers.””
Matteo stared at her maid uniform.
The red fabric.
The simple design.
The disguise hiding someone who had a connection to his wife.
“You became a maid.””
“Yes.””
“To protect my son.””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me.””
“Yes.””
His anger rose.
Not because she wanted to protect Nico.
Because she had done it alone.
Because she had entered his home carrying a secret.
Because Isabella had trusted her with something Matteo never knew existed.
“You expect me to believe all of this?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
That stopped him.
“You don’t?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because if I were you, I wouldn’t believe me either.””
Her honesty unsettled him.
People lied to Matteo constantly.
They begged.
They manipulated.
They tried to survive.
But Liana was not trying to convince him.
She was simply telling him what happened.
That made her more dangerous.
Or more trustworthy.
And Matteo hated not knowing which.
“Give me the necklace.””
Liana hesitated.
Only for a second.
Then she handed it over.
Matteo took it carefully.
The moment his fingers touched the pendant, something inside him cracked.
Not weakness.
Memory.
Isabella laughing.
Isabella standing barefoot in their kitchen.
Isabella telling him he was impossible because he remembered business meetings but forgot simple things like buying flowers.
Isabella wearing this necklace and smiling.
He closed his hand around it.
“What’s inside?””
Liana looked confused.
“What?””
“You said Isabella left this for me.””
“Yes.””
“Then there’s a reason.””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She didn’t explain.””
Matteo examined the pendant.
Small.
Metal.
Nothing unusual.
He looked at Adrian.
“Get a technician.””
Adrian nodded.
Immediately, one guard moved.
Liana watched Matteo.
“You think she hid something inside?””
“I think my wife knew she might not survive.””
The words were difficult.
Even now.
After seven months.
After everything.
Saying them aloud made them feel real.
Liana looked away.
“She was scared.””
“Of who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
Matteo stepped closer.
“Then tell me what you do know.””
Liana took a breath.
“She told me someone close to you was dangerous.””
The sentence hit harder than any accusation.
“Someone close to me?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“She didn’t say.””
“Why?””
“Because she thought knowing too much would put me in danger.””
Matteo laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
“Apparently she was right.””
Liana looked at him.
“Matteo.””
“What?””
“Be careful.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Are you warning me?””
“I’m telling you what Isabella told me.””
“And what was that?””
Her voice dropped.
“She said the person who hurt her wasn’t trying to kill her.””
Matteo froze.
“What?””
“She said death wasn’t the goal.””
The hallway felt colder.
“What was the goal?””
Liana looked toward the nursery.
“Nico.””
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The meaning settled slowly.
Someone had not wanted Isabella dead.
Someone had wanted something else.
Her son.
Matteo’s entire body went still.
A protective instinct older than logic took over.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“Who would want my son?””
“I don’t know.””
“Who knew?””
Liana looked at him.
“Everyone.””
Matteo’s expression darkened.
“What does that mean?””
“Everyone knew Isabella’s pregnancy was important.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“She was afraid someone would use Nico against you.””
Matteo looked away.
Because that was exactly what happened in his world.
Family was not only love.
Family was leverage.
A child was not just a child.
To enemies, a child was a weakness.
A way inside.
A way to control a man who believed he could not be controlled.
Footsteps echoed from the other end of the hallway.
The technician arrived carrying equipment.
Matteo took the necklace and handed it over.
“Open it.””
The technician examined the pendant carefully.
Minutes passed.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, the technician looked up.
“There’s something inside.””
Matteo’s heart tightened.
“What?””
“A memory chip.””
Liana covered her mouth.
Matteo stared.
“Can you access it?””
“I’ll try.””
The technician connected the chip to a device.
The hallway lights reflected against the screen.
A file appeared.
One file.
No name.
No date.
Just a single word.
“Matteo.””
Nobody spoke.
The file had been created specifically for him.
The technician looked uncertain.
“Do you want me to open it?””
Matteo stared at the screen.
A message from his dead wife.
A message created before she died.
A message she had hidden because she believed someone around him was dangerous.
“Yes.””
The file opened.
At first, there was only darkness.
Then a familiar voice filled the hallway.
“Matteo.””
Every muscle in his body froze.
Isabella.
Her voice.
Alive.
Close.
Real.
Liana started crying silently.
Matteo could not move.
The recording continued.
“If you are watching this, then something happened.””
A pause.
A shaky breath.
“I hope I’m wrong.””
Matteo closed his eyes.
Because Isabella sounded afraid.
Not slightly worried.
Terrified.
“I need you to listen carefully. Do not trust anyone until you know the truth.””
The recording paused.
Then Isabella whispered:
“Not even the people who have been protecting you for years.””
Matteo opened his eyes.
Slowly.
His gaze moved toward Adrian.
His oldest friend.
His most trusted man.
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Boss…”
But Matteo raised a hand.
Silence.
The recording continued.
“The person who betrayed me is someone you would never suspect.””
A pause.
Then:
“And the reason Nico recognizes Liana is because…”
The audio suddenly distorted.
Static filled the hallway.
Everyone stared at the screen.
The file glitched.
Then Isabella’s voice returned for one final sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
“Matteo… your son was never supposed to survive.””
The screen went black.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
And for the first time in seven months, Matteo Varric understood one terrifying truth.
Isabella had not left him a goodbye.
May you like
She had left him a warning.
And someone inside his own world had been waiting for Nico to disappear.
