Chapter 11: The Mother Who Hid the Truth

Matteo Varric did not remember walking back into the mansion.

He remembered the cold air outside.

He remembered Liana standing beside him in the garden.

He remembered Adrian’s voice through the phone.

But everything after that felt blurred.

Because there was one thought repeating in his mind.

Clara Varric.

His mother.

The woman who held him as a child.

The woman who taught him how to survive.

The woman who told him that family was the only thing in the world that could never be replaced.

The same woman who had spent months hiding pieces of the truth.

And now the evidence pointed toward her.

Matteo entered the security room without saying a word.

Adrian stood beside the monitors.

His expression was serious.

Not nervous.

Not uncertain.

Serious.

That was worse.

“Show me.””

Adrian nodded.

The screen turned on.

A security recording appeared.

The timestamp showed three weeks earlier.

The nursery.

The night Nico began changing.

The night Isabella’s fears returned.

Matteo watched.

The door opened.

A figure entered.

At first, the person’s face was hidden.

Then the camera angle shifted.

Matteo felt his chest tighten.

Clara.

His mother walked into the nursery.

Alone.

Carrying something.

She moved carefully.

Almost like she knew exactly where the cameras were.

Almost like she had done it before.

Matteo stared.

“Zoom in.””

The image enlarged.

Clara placed something inside the room.

A small box.

Then she stood beside Nico’s crib.

She did not look threatening.

She did not look like someone planning harm.

She looked devastated.

Like someone saying goodbye.

Matteo’s anger weakened slightly.

But not enough.

“What happened after this?””

Adrian switched to another camera.

The footage continued.

Clara stayed for almost twenty minutes.

Then another person entered.

Matteo leaned forward.

A man.

His face hidden.

The quality was poor.

“Enhance.””

“We tried.””

“Try again.””

The technician worked.

The image sharpened slightly.

Not enough.

But enough to see something.

A ring.

On the man’s hand.

Matteo froze.

A black ring.

With the Varric symbol.

His family crest.

“Who owns that ring?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Only family members.””

The room became silent.

“Who?””

Adrian hesitated.

“Matteo…”

“Who?””

“Your uncle’s branch.””

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

“My uncle is dead.””

“Yes.””

“Then how does someone wear his family ring?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Someone had inherited it.

Someone connected to the erased branch of the family.

Someone who should not exist.

“Find him.””

“We’re trying.””

“No.””

Matteo turned.

“Find him.””

The difference was clear.

There was no room for failure.

Clara sat in the library.

She looked tired.

Older.

Like the weight of decades had finally caught up with her.

When Matteo entered, she already knew why.

Mothers always knew when their children were hurt.

Even when those children were grown.

Even when they became men everyone feared.

“You saw the footage.””

Matteo stopped.

“You knew?””

Clara looked down.

“I knew this day would come.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“It’s not.””

Matteo placed the tablet on the table.

The footage played.

Clara watched herself enter the nursery.

She did not deny it.

She did not panic.

She simply closed her eyes.

“Why?””

The question came from Matteo.

Not as a mafia boss.

Not as a son.

Just as a man who needed to understand.

“Why were you there?””

Clara looked at the screen.

“Because Isabella asked me to.””

Matteo froze.

“What?””

“She knew she was in danger.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she made me promise.””

Matteo laughed softly.

Another promise.

Another secret.

“Everyone promised her something.””

Clara looked at him.

“She was trying to protect Nico.””

“And I wasn’t?””

“You were.””

“Then why?””

“Because you were looking in the wrong direction.””

Matteo’s expression hardened.

“Explain.””

Clara took a breath.

“After Isabella died, you blamed yourself.””

“Yes.””

“You searched for an enemy outside the family.””

Matteo said nothing.

Because it was true.

“And Isabella knew you would.””

“So?””

“So she needed someone to keep you from finding the truth too quickly.””

Matteo stared.

“Too quickly?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because the person responsible was watching you.””

Silence.

Matteo stepped closer.

“You knew someone was watching me.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“Yes.””

His jaw tightened.

“Do you understand what you did?””

Clara looked at him.

“I lost my son once.””

The answer surprised him.

“What?””

“I lost you when you became Matteo Varric.””

The words hurt.

Because they were not an accusation.

They were grief.

“I watched your father turn into someone who trusted power more than people.””

Clara looked away.

“And I watched you slowly become the same.””

Matteo’s face changed.

“I’m not him.””

“No.””

Her eyes met his.

“You’re not.””

A pause.

“But you were becoming him.””

The words stayed between them.

Matteo hated hearing them.

Because a part of him feared they were true.

Clara continued.

“Isabella saw it too.””

“Isabella?””

“She knew your anger protected you.””

Matteo looked away.

“But she also knew it could destroy you.””

The room was quiet.

Then Matteo asked:

“What was in the box?””

Clara looked at him.

“The nursery box?””

“Yes.””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why did you put it there?””

“I didn’t.””

Matteo frowned.

“But the footage…”

“I entered the nursery.””

“Yes.””

“And I placed something.””

“What?””

Clara reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small key.

Matteo stared.

“What is that?””

“Something Isabella gave me.””

“When?””

“The day before she died.””

“Why?””

“Because she said if she failed, you would need it.””

Matteo took the key.

“What does it open?””

Clara looked toward the window.

“Something your father hid.””

The old Varric family archive was located beneath the mansion.

A place Matteo had visited only once.

As a child.

His father called it the room where the family history slept.

But Matteo now understood.

It was not sleeping.

It was buried.

The key opened a hidden compartment behind a wall of old documents.

Inside was a small metal box.

No name.

No label.

Just the Varric crest.

Matteo opened it.

Inside were papers.

Photos.

Letters.

And one document placed carefully on top.

A birth certificate.

He picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The room went silent.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Matteo did not answer.

He handed the paper to him.

Adrian read.

His expression changed.

Because the name on the document was impossible.

The child’s name:

Isabella Elena Varric.

Mother:

Elena Graves.

Father:

Alexander Varric.

The same impossible truth.

The same hidden bloodline.

But beneath it was another document.

One Matteo recognized.

A second birth certificate.

For Liana.

And this one contained a detail that made his blood run cold.

Father:

Alexander Varric.

Mother:

Elena Graves.

Twins.

Two daughters.

One hidden.

One taken.

But then Matteo saw something else.

A handwritten note attached to the documents.

His father’s handwriting.

Only one sentence.

*The girls must never know they belong to the Varric bloodline.*

Matteo stared.

His father had erased them.

Not because they were dangerous.

Because they were proof.

Proof that the Varric legacy had never belonged only to his branch.

Proof that power could have passed to someone else.

Someone like Isabella.

Someone like Liana.

The room suddenly felt too small.

“Matteo.””

Adrian’s voice pulled him back.

But Matteo was already looking at the final item in the box.

A photograph.

Old.

Faded.

Three people standing together.

Alexander Varric.

Elena Graves.

And a baby.

A baby Matteo recognized.

Not because he had seen the child.

Because he had seen the face.

The same eyes.

The same expression.

The same impossible connection.

The baby was him.

Matteo dropped the photograph.

His entire world stopped.

“No.””

Adrian picked it up.

“Boss…”

“No.””

His voice broke.

Because the truth was no longer about Isabella.

Not about Liana.

Not about Nico.

It was about him.

A secret hidden before he was old enough to understand it.

A secret his father had buried.

A secret his mother had protected.

A secret that explained why everyone had been afraid.

Matteo Varric had spent his entire life believing he was the rightful heir of the family.

But the photograph proved something else.

He had never been the beginning of the story.

He had been part of the secret.

And somewhere in the shadows of the mansion, someone knew Matteo had finally discovered the truth.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

*Now you understand why Isabella had to die.*
