Chapter 9: The Fall Of The Woman Who Thought She Was Untouchable
The words hung in the air.
“My employer.””
Nobody understood at first.
Neither did I.
Then Nick’s grandmother’s expression changed.
“Martha…”
Martha looked away.
The silence told us everything.
Nick stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Martha shook her head.
“It’s not what you think.””
Nobody believed that anymore.
Because every time Martha said those words, the truth turned out to be worse.
His grandmother looked concerned.
“What happened?””
Martha’s hands started shaking.
“They found out about the complaint.””
“What complaint?”” Nick asked.
Martha closed her eyes.
I could see her trying to decide whether to lie.
But she had run out of places to hide.
“There was an issue at work.””
Nick frowned.
“What kind of issue?””
She didn’t answer.
Caroline looked at her phone.
Then back at Martha.
“You lied about that too?””
Martha looked angry.
“Stay out of this.””
Caroline shook her head.
“You involved me in your lies. I’m already in this.””
Nick looked between them.
“What is going on?””
His grandmother sighed.
“Martha has always cared about appearances.””
She looked at Nick.
“Sometimes more than she cares about doing the right thing.””
Martha suddenly became defensive.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know enough.””
The older woman turned to Nick.
“Your mother has spent years building an image.””
She paused.
“An image that is beginning to collapse.””
I watched Martha’s face.
The confidence was gone.
The woman who had cut my hair in front of hundreds of people was now terrified of a phone call.
That told me everything.
Nick looked at his mother.
“Tell me.””
Martha whispered:
“I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She looked down.
“I used information I shouldn’t have used.””
The room became silent.
Her words were vague.
Too vague.
Nick noticed too.
“What does that mean?””
Martha didn’t answer.
His grandmother stepped forward.
“It means she crossed professional boundaries.””
Nick stared.
“Mom.””
“I didn’t hurt anyone.””
The way she said it made everyone uncomfortable.
Because people who haven’t done anything wrong usually don’t start with that sentence.
Caroline looked at me.
Then whispered:
“She’s been doing this for years.””
I turned.
“What?””
Caroline lowered her voice.
“She always finds ways to control situations.””
Nick heard her.
“What are you talking about?””
Caroline hesitated.
Then she said:
“She used personal information to pressure people.””
Nick looked horrified.
“What information?””
Caroline looked at Martha.
“Things people trusted her with.””
Martha’s face went pale.
“Stop.””
But Caroline continued.
“She told me once that secrets were the most powerful thing a person could have.””
My stomach twisted.
Because suddenly I understood.
Martha wasn’t just controlling family members.
She controlled people everywhere.
By making them afraid.
Nick looked at his mother.
“Is that true?””
Martha didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
He stepped back.
“I don’t know who you are anymore.””
Those words broke something in her.
Because she could handle anger.
She could handle disappointment.
But losing her son’s trust?
That was different.
“I did everything for you.””
Nick shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You did everything for yourself.””
Martha started crying.
Real tears.
But I didn’t know if they were tears of regret.
Or tears because she finally faced consequences.
Then her phone rang again.
She looked.
And this time, she answered.
Everyone watched her.
“Yes?””
A pause.
Then her face completely changed.
“What?””
She listened.
“No, please. You don’t understand.””
Another pause.
Then:
“I can explain.””
She looked desperate.
The call ended.
Martha slowly lowered the phone.
Nick asked quietly:
“What happened?””
She looked at him.
And whispered:
“I lost my job.””
Nobody spoke.
The woman who had spent years judging everyone else had finally fallen.
But somehow…
I didn’t feel victorious.
I just felt exhausted.
Because this night had started as my wedding.
A celebration of love.
And somehow it became the night an entire family’s secrets came pouring out.
Nick came to stand beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“For everything.””
This time, I believed him.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
But because for the first time, he wasn’t trying to protect his mother.
He was trying to protect us.
Then his grandmother said something that made everyone turn.
“There is still one more thing Martha has hidden.””
Martha looked up.
Her face went pale.
“No.””
The older woman stared at her.
“Yes.””
Nick frowned.
“What else?””
His grandmother looked at me.
And said:
“The reason Martha hated Emily from the beginning…”
She paused.
“Was not because of money.””
Everyone waited.
“Was not because of status.””
Martha closed her eyes.
Because she knew what was coming.
His grandmother finished:
“It was because Emily reminded her of someone from her past.””
And suddenly…
May you like
Martha wasn’t just hiding a plan.
She was hiding a secret.
