Chapter 7: The Phone Call That Changed Everything

Martha stood frozen near the entrance of the restaurant.

The phone was still pressed against her ear, but she wasn’t speaking anymore.

She wasn’t arguing.

She wasn’t insulting anyone.

She wasn’t pretending she was the victim.

She was scared.

And that was something I had never seen before.

For years, Martha had walked into every room like she owned it.

She criticized people without hesitation.

She said whatever she wanted.

She acted like consequences were something that happened to other people.

But now, standing under the bright lights of the reception hall, she looked like someone who had just realized the world was finally catching up with her.

Nick stepped forward.

“Mom, who was that?””

Martha didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

She slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s nothing.””

Nobody believed her.

Not for a second.

His grandmother looked at her carefully.

“Martha.””

The warning in her voice made Martha tense.

“What?””

“You know exactly who that was.””

Martha’s jaw tightened.

“I said it’s nothing.””

Nick looked frustrated.

“You keep saying that every time you’re caught doing something wrong.””

Martha looked at him.

For a moment, I thought she might apologize.

I thought maybe seeing Nick finally stand against her had broken through.

I was wrong.

Instead, she looked at me.

And somehow, she found a way to blame me.

“This is because of you.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“You came into this family and caused all of this.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She still couldn’t accept responsibility.

Nick’s face turned cold.

“No.””

Martha ignored him.

“You changed my son.””

I looked at Nick.

Then back at her.

“No. I didn’t change him.””

My voice was calm.

“He finally stopped letting you control him.””

The guests became silent.

Martha looked like she wanted to respond, but she couldn’t.

Because deep down, she knew it was true.

Nick had spent years trying to keep everyone happy.

Trying to be the perfect son.

Trying to avoid conflict.

But tonight, something had finally broken.

He had chosen me.

Not because his mother was his enemy.

But because his wife was supposed to be his partner.

His grandmother walked toward the center of the room.

“There is something everyone needs to understand.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“Martha’s actions tonight were not random.””

She looked at me.

“She has been planning this for a long time.””

My stomach dropped.

Planning?

“What do you mean?””

The older woman sighed.

“Martha believed that if she embarrassed you enough tonight, you would leave.””

I looked at Nick.

He looked shocked.

“She wanted that?””

His grandmother nodded.

“She thought humiliating Emily would make her realize she didn’t belong.””

The room filled with whispers.

Martha crossed her arms.

“I was trying to save my son from making a mistake.””

Nick looked at her.

“Marrying Emily was never a mistake.””

Martha’s eyes filled with anger.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“No,” Nick replied.

“I finally do.””

That sentence seemed to hurt her more than anything else.

Because she had spent years convincing herself she knew what was best for him.

Now her own son was telling her she was wrong.

His grandmother reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a small folder.

“Martha.””

Martha’s face changed.

“No.””

“I think it’s time.””

“No.””

The older woman opened the folder.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Documents.

“What are those?”” Nick asked.

His grandmother looked at him.

“Messages between your mother and Caroline’s family.””

The room became completely silent.

Martha stepped forward.

“Those are private.””

“Privacy does not protect manipulation.””

Nick took the papers.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

The color slowly disappeared from his face.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at his mother.

“You told Caroline that my wedding was just a temporary phase?””

Martha said nothing.

Nick kept reading.

“You told her that after I realized Emily wasn’t suitable, I would come back to her?””

A few guests gasped.

My heart sank.

Because this wasn’t just about me anymore.

Martha had been disrespecting our marriage before it even started.

She had already decided it would fail.

Martha finally spoke.

“I was trying to keep my options open.””

Nick looked at her like he didn’t recognize her.

“Options?””

“You’re my son.””

Her voice became emotional.

“I know you better than anyone.””

“No, Mom.””

His voice cracked.

“You knew what you wanted me to be.””

The words hit harder than anger.

Because they were true.

Martha had never really seen Nick.

She had only seen her version of him.

The son she could control.

The son who followed her plans.

The son who never challenged her.

His grandmother looked at me.

“Emily, I know tonight has been horrible.””

I almost laughed.

Horrible wasn’t enough to describe it.

But I nodded.

“There is something you should know.””

“What?””

She looked at Martha.

“She didn’t just invite Caroline to meet Nick.””

My chest tightened.

“What else?””

“She invited Caroline to the wedding.””

The room exploded.

“What?””

I turned toward Martha.

“You invited her here?””

Martha’s face went pale.

“I wanted her to see reality.””

“What reality?””

“That you were not right for him.””

I felt numb.

She had been willing to bring another woman to my wedding.

My wedding.

The day I was supposed to begin my life with Nick.

Nick looked devastated.

“You invited someone who wanted to marry me to our wedding?””

Martha said nothing.

Because there was no excuse.

Then suddenly, the doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped inside.

And I immediately knew who she was.

Caroline.

The woman Martha had spent years calling perfect.

The woman she wanted Nick to marry.

Everyone expected a dramatic confrontation.

But what happened next shocked all of us.

Caroline looked directly at Martha.

And said:

“I can’t believe you thought I would help you do this.””

Martha froze.

May you like

Because Caroline wasn’t there to take Nick away.

She was there to destroy Martha’s last lie.
