Chapter 6: The Plan Behind the Perfect Bride

Martha didn’t speak.

For the first time since I met her, she had nothing to say.

No insult.

No excuse.

No clever explanation.

Just silence.

And somehow, that was more powerful than anything.

Nick held the papers tightly.

“Mom.””

His voice was quiet.

“What did she mean?””

Martha looked at him.

“Your grandmother is confused.””

“No.””

The older woman interrupted.

“She is not.””

Martha glared at her.

“You always hated me.””

Her mother-in-law sighed.

“I spent years trying to help you.””

The statement shocked everyone.

“I gave you chances. I warned you. I told you that controlling people would only make them leave you.””

Martha’s eyes flashed.

“You never accepted me.””

“No,” the older woman said.

“I never accepted what you became.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because this wasn’t just about my wedding anymore.

This was about years of family history.

Nick looked at his mother.

“Tell me.””

Martha looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around.

At the guests.

At the woman who exposed her.

At me.

Then she finally said something.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Protect him?

By destroying his marriage?

By humiliating his wife?

“How?”” Nick asked.

Martha’s voice shook.

“Because Emily doesn’t belong in our world.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not a tradition.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a mistake.

She simply believed I was beneath her.

“She’s a nice girl,” Martha continued.

“But she’s not the right girl.””

Nick stared at her.

“You still don’t get it.””

“Get what?””

“That I never wanted the life you planned for me.””

Martha looked hurt.

“I wanted better for you.””

“No.””

Nick shook his head.

“You wanted control.””

The words hit her.

Hard.

His grandmother stepped forward.

“She was going to announce after the wedding that Emily’s family was not contributing enough financially.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

Nick looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

The older woman looked at Martha.

“She planned to embarrass Emily’s parents.””

My hands became cold.

“She wanted to tell everyone that they didn’t give enough for the wedding.””

Martha quickly defended herself.

“I was only being honest.””

Nobody could believe her.

“They didn’t have as much money as us,” she said.

“So what?”” Nick asked.

His voice was louder now.

“They gave what they could.””

“But it wasn’t enough.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

My parents had spent months saving.

They had sacrificed so much.

They weren’t wealthy.

But they loved me.

And that was worth more than anything.

Nick looked at his mother with disbelief.

“You were going to humiliate them too?””

Martha didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

She had gone too far.

His grandmother looked at me.

“Emily, I need you to know something.””

I looked at her.

“The hair cutting wasn’t a tradition.””

“I know.””

“No,” she said gently.

“You don’t understand.””

She glanced at Martha.

“It was something Martha witnessed years ago.””

Everyone looked confused.

Martha’s expression changed.

The older woman continued.

“When Martha was younger, she was jealous of another bride in the family.””

Martha whispered.

“Stop.””

“She destroyed that woman’s wedding veil.””

A wave of shock moved through the room.

“What?””

Nick looked horrified.

His grandmother continued.

“She has always believed that if she could ruin someone else’s happiness, she could feel powerful.””

Martha shook her head.

“That was years ago.””

“And you never changed.””

The words were devastating.

Because they were true.

Martha had not changed.

She had simply become better at hiding who she was.

Nick looked at me.

His eyes filled with regret.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to forgive him.

Part of me did.

Because I knew he loved me.

But love was not enough.

Not without trust.

Not without courage.

Not without standing beside someone when it mattered.

“I need time,” I whispered.

He nodded.

“I understand.””

For once, he didn’t argue.

He didn’t ask me to make it easier.

He didn’t ask me to forgive immediately.

He just accepted it.

Martha suddenly grabbed her purse.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at her.

“I am leaving.””

Nobody stopped her.

Not even Nick.

She walked toward the exit.

Then she turned around.

And looked at me.

“I hope you’re happy.””

The bitterness in her voice was chilling.

But this time…

I wasn’t afraid.

Because I finally understood something.

Martha had spent years trying to convince me I wasn’t good enough.

But the truth was…

She was the one who had never been enough for the family she claimed to protect.

She reached the door.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed instantly.

“What?””

Everyone noticed.

The confidence disappeared again.

She listened silently.

Then whispered:

“No. That’s impossible.””

Nick looked at his grandmother.

“What is it?””

The older woman looked toward Martha.

And said quietly:

“Someone else knows what she did.””

Martha lowered the phone.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

She looked truly terrified.
