Chapter 12: The Secret That Almost Destroyed Our Marriage

The message on Nick’s phone changed everything.

I could feel it.

The atmosphere shifted.

Until that moment, the night had been about what Martha had done to me.

The wedding.

The haircut.

The humiliation.

The lies.

But now, everyone was looking at Nick.

And I immediately felt afraid.

“What does it say?””

Nick didn’t answer.

He kept staring at the screen.

“Nick?””

He finally looked up.

His face was filled with confusion.

Then guilt.

That scared me more than anger.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“It’s about Dad.””

Nobody moved.

Nick’s father had passed away several years earlier.

He rarely talked about it.

I knew it was painful for him.

“What about your dad?””

His grandmother looked worried.

“Let me see.””

Nick handed her the phone.

She read the message.

Then closed her eyes.

“Oh, Martha.””

Martha looked terrified.

“I didn’t think anyone would find that.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

Nick turned toward his mother.

“You knew?””

Martha immediately looked regretful.

“No, not like that.””

“Then explain.””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation said everything.

Nick’s voice became quieter.

“What did you hide from me?””

Martha sat down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

That sentence again.

The same excuse.

The same shield.

Nick shook his head.

“No.””

This time, his voice broke.

“Every time you hurt someone, you say you’re protecting them.””

Martha looked devastated.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your father wasn’t exactly who you thought he was.””

My heart stopped.

Nick stared.

“What does that mean?””

His grandmother looked away.

Like she already knew.

Martha continued:

“Before your father died, there were financial problems.””

Nick frowned.

“I know he had business difficulties.””

“No.””

Martha shook her head.

“You don’t know everything.””

The room became cold.

“What happened?””

She took a deep breath.

“Your father made a decision that affected our family.””

Nick waited.

“He trusted the wrong person.””

“And?””

Martha looked at him.

“That person was your mother.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Nick’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

Martha’s eyes filled with tears.

“I covered for him.””

Silence.

“You covered for Dad?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I loved him.””

That answer was painful.

Because it sounded like the same excuse she used for everything.

Love.

Protection.

Family.

But sometimes those words were used to hide the truth.

His grandmother interrupted.

“Martha, tell him the entire truth.””

Martha looked at her.

“I was trying to.””

“No.””

The older woman shook her head.

“You were trying to control the outcome.””

Nick looked between them.

“What happened?””

His grandmother sighed.

“Your father made a financial mistake.””

Nick waited.

“But Martha hid the evidence.””

My eyes widened.

“Why?””

His grandmother looked at Martha.

“Because she believed if the truth came out, she would lose everything.””

Nick looked hurt.

“Mom.””

Martha cried.

“I was scared.””

The confession was quiet.

Real.

“I had built this life. This family. This image.””

She looked at Nick.

“I couldn’t lose it.””

Nick stepped back.

“So you lied?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

Martha didn’t answer.

And that silence was the answer.

“Years?””

She nodded.

I watched Nick.

The pain on his face was heartbreaking.

Because this wasn’t just another lie.

This was about his entire childhood.

His understanding of his family.

His memories.

Everything.

“I spent my whole life thinking I knew my family.””

Martha whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Nick laughed sadly.

“You always say that after the damage is done.””

Nobody spoke.

Then his grandmother said something unexpected.

“There is one more person who needs to hear this.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Who?””

She looked toward the entrance.

And my heart dropped.

Because standing there…

Was someone none of us expected.

Someone connected to Martha’s biggest secret.

Someone who had been silent for years.

Nick’s father’s old business partner.

And he was holding a file.

A file that could finally reveal the entire truth.
