Chapter 2: The Secret Tradition That Never Existed
The reception was everything I dreamed it would be.
The restaurant was decorated with candles, flowers, and soft lights that made everything look magical.
Everyone was laughing.
Everyone was dancing.
Everyone was celebrating.
At least, that was what I thought.
Nick and I spent the first hour greeting guests, taking pictures, and thanking everyone who came.
I remember feeling exhausted but unbelievably happy.
There was something incredible about looking around the room and realizing all those people were there because they supported us.
Because they believed in our love.
After dinner, the music became louder.
The dance floor filled with people.
Nick grabbed my hand and smiled.
“Come on, Mrs. Carter.””
I laughed.
“I still have trouble getting used to that.””
“You better get used to it,” he teased.
We walked onto the dance floor.
The song was slow.
Romantic.
The kind of song that makes you forget everything else.
I rested my head against his shoulder.
For those few minutes, I felt completely safe.
Then something happened.
Something I still remember every time I close my eyes.
A strange feeling.
A slight pull.
At first, I thought someone had accidentally stepped on my braid.
Then I heard it.
A sharp sound.
Snip.
My body froze.
I pulled away from Nick.
“What was that?””
Before he could answer, I felt something heavy fall away from the back of my neck.
I turned around.
And my entire world stopped.
Martha was standing behind me.
Smiling.
Holding a pair of scissors.
And in her other hand…
Was my braid.
My beautiful wedding braid.
The braid I spent months planning.
The braid my grandmother would have loved.
Gone.
Cut off.
Right at the base of my neck.
For a second, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
It was like the entire room had forgotten how to breathe.
I stared at Martha.
I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
“What did you do?””
My voice came out broken.
Martha looked at the braid in her hand like she had just completed some important ceremony.
“Honey, relax.””
Relax.
That word made something inside me break.
“You cut my hair.””
She smiled.
“Yes.””
A few guests gasped.
Nick stepped forward.
“Mom…”
But Martha raised her hand.
“Don’t make this dramatic.””
I touched the back of my head.
My fingers shook.
My hair that had reached my waist was now barely touching my shoulders.
I looked at the pieces on the floor.
My wedding hair.
My memory.
My moment.
Destroyed.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Martha laughed softly.
“It’s a family tradition.””
The room became silent.
A family tradition?
What was she talking about?
Nobody knew.
Nobody reacted like this was normal.
Because it wasn’t.
Martha looked around proudly.
“In our family, the bride gets her hair cut at the wedding reception. It symbolizes becoming part of the family.””
I looked around the room.
People exchanged confused looks.
Even members of Nick’s family looked shocked.
His aunt frowned.
“I’ve never heard of that.””
Martha’s smile disappeared for half a second.
Then she recovered.
“Well, not everyone remembers every tradition.””
I stared at her.
“You made this up.””
The words slipped out before I could stop them.
Her eyes narrowed.
“How dare you accuse me.””
“You just cut my hair without asking me.””
“It’s only hair.””
That sentence.
That cruel, careless sentence.
I will never forget it.
“It’ll grow back.””
I felt tears filling my eyes.
It wasn’t just hair.
It was my wedding day.
It was a choice she stole from me.
It was a message.
A message that she could do whatever she wanted and expect everyone to accept it.
Nick looked completely devastated.
“Mom, what were you thinking?””
Martha shrugged.
“I was welcoming my new daughter.””
Nobody believed her.
Not even her.
Because her face didn’t show kindness.
It showed satisfaction.
She wanted me humiliated.
She wanted everyone to see that she still had power.
I walked away from the dance floor, trying desperately not to cry in front of everyone.
Nick followed me.
“Emily…”
I turned around.
“Did you know?””
His face changed.
“What?””
“Did you know she was going to do this?””
“No.””
The pain in his voice told me he was telling the truth.
“I swear I didn’t.””
I looked at him.
The man I loved.
The man who had promised to protect me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Pure anger.
Not at me.
At his mother.
Nick took my hands.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t need an apology from you.””
“I know.””
He looked toward the reception hall.
“I need to fix this.””
Then he walked away.
At first, I thought he was going to confront Martha.
But he didn’t.
He disappeared.
For ten minutes.
Ten minutes where everyone whispered.
Ten minutes where I stood there trying to understand how my wedding had turned into a nightmare.
Then the doors opened.
Nick walked back into the restaurant.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was a woman I had never seen before.
An older woman.
Elegant.
Confident.
And the moment Martha saw her…
The color drained from her face.
Because unlike everyone else in that room…
This woman knew exactly what Martha had done before.
And she knew the truth about the “family tradition.””
Nick took the microphone.
“Everyone, can I have your attention?””
The room became quiet.
He reached for my hand.
Then he looked directly at his mother.
“Mom, there’s something I forgot to mention.””
Martha looked nervous.
Nick continued.
“I invited a special guest to our wedding.””
The woman stepped forward.
Everyone watched.
And then Martha whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“No…”
Nick held up the microphone.
“I would like everyone to meet someone who can explain exactly what our family traditions really are.””
The woman looked at Martha.
And smiled.
“Hello, Martha.””
Martha took a step backward.
Because she recognized her.

And whatever secret existed between them…
Was about to destroy everything.
