Chapter 9: The Last Room Beneath the House
The gunshot echoed through the mansion.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The sound seemed to travel through every hidden hallway, every sealed room, every secret buried beneath the walls.
Then people started screaming.
“Get down!””
“Everyone move!””
“Find cover!””
The police officers rushed toward the entrance hall.
Guests ran toward the exits.
Firefighters shouted outside.
But Emily only saw one thing.
Daniel Cross disappearing down the basement stairs.
And Lily was still in her arms.
“Where is he going?”” Emily asked.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
The basement.
The place where Daniel had hidden everything.
Clara stepped forward.
Her eyes remained fixed on the dark staircase.
“He's going to destroy it.””
Mara looked at her.
“Destroy what?””
“The proof.””
Vanessa wiped tears from her face.
“He doesn't care about the proof.””
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa stared toward the basement.
“He cares about what is down there.””
Emily tightened her grip on Lily.
“The last girl.””
Clara nodded.
“She was never in the rooms upstairs.””
A police officer approached.
“Everyone stay here.””
Emily turned.
“With respect, that's not happening.””
The officer looked at her.
“Ma'am, this is an active crime scene.””
“And there is a child down there.””
The officer hesitated.
Emily pointed toward Daniel's direction.
“The man you are looking for just ran into a hidden basement after trying to take a child.””
The officer looked toward the stairs.
Then at Clara.
“Who are you?””
Clara answered:
“The first person who survived him.””
The officer's expression changed.
He looked at his partner.
Then back at the basement.
“How many people are down there?””
Clara whispered:
“More than you think.””
A cold silence followed.
The officer grabbed his radio.
“All units, prepare to enter lower levels.””
Static.
Then:
“Basement access blocked.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Of course.””
Emily looked at her.
“What?””
“He built it that way.””
“Can you open it?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then do it.””
Vanessa walked toward the staircase.
Mara followed.
Clara remained still.
Emily noticed.
“You're not coming?””
Clara looked at the basement.
Her face showed something Emily had not seen before.
Fear.
“I know what's down there.””
Mara reached for her hand.
“You don't have to go alone.””
Clara looked at her.
For a moment, she looked like the little girl she once was.
Then she nodded.
Together, they followed Vanessa.
Emily stayed close.
Because she knew something now.
The basement was not just a place.
It was where Daniel kept his secrets.
And secrets always fought hardest before they died.
The basement entrance was hidden behind the library wall.
The same place where Emily had discovered the vault.
But now the door was different.
A thick steel barrier.
A fingerprint scanner.
A small camera.
Daniel's voice suddenly came through the speaker.
“Vanessa.””
Everyone stopped.
Emily felt Lily grab her hand.
Daniel sounded calm again.
Almost relaxed.
“Still trying to save people?””
Vanessa stepped toward the camera.
“You're finished.””
A soft laugh came from the speaker.
“You said that fifteen years ago.””
Vanessa froze.
Clara looked down.
Daniel continued.
“You should have listened to me.””
Mara shouted:
“You destroyed our lives!””
Daniel ignored her.
His attention remained on Vanessa.
“You were always weak.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“You used my fear.””
“No.””
Daniel's voice became colder.
“I showed you who you really were.””
Emily hated how easily he spoke.
Like he was not responsible.
Like everything was someone else's choice.
Vanessa placed her hand on the scanner.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Daniel laughed.
“I removed your access.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“Then how do we get inside?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered:
“You don't.””
The speaker clicked off.
Emily looked around.
“There has to be another way.””
Clara walked toward the wall.
She placed her hand against the steel.
“He didn't remove everything.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“What?””
Clara closed her eyes.
“He always needed someone to know.””
A memory passed across her face.
“He wanted his secrets discovered.””
Mara frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he believed people would never believe them.””
Clara looked at the camera.
“He liked watching people fail.””
She pointed.
“Behind the panel.””
Emily moved closer.
There was a small section of the wall that looked slightly different.
Vanessa pulled it open.
Inside was an old mechanical switch.
Not electronic.
Not modern.
A simple lever.
Emily stared.
“Why would he leave this?””
Clara answered:
“Because he wanted me to remember.””
Vanessa pulled the lever.
The steel door unlocked.
Slowly.
Heavy.
Like the house itself was resisting.
When it opened, a wave of cold air moved through the hallway.
The smell was old.
Dust.
Metal.
Fear.
The basement stairs descended into darkness.
A police officer turned on his flashlight.
“Everyone stay behind us.””
They moved downward.
Step by step.
The deeper they went, the quieter the mansion became.
The fire above disappeared.
The voices disappeared.
Only footsteps remained.
Then Emily saw the walls.
Photographs.
Hundreds.
Children.
Families.
Names.
Dates.
Her stomach turned.
Mara stopped.
“No…”
Emily looked at her.
“What?””
Mara touched one photograph.
A little girl.
Maybe eight years old.
“She's from the news.””
Vanessa looked.
“She disappeared.””
Another photograph.
Another child.
Another missing person.
The police officers began taking pictures.
“This is evidence.””
Clara walked forward.
“He kept records.””
Emily looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because he thought he owned every story.””
They reached a large room.
The center of the basement.
There were desks.
Computers.
Files.
Monitors.
A control center.
Vanessa whispered:
“The security room.””
Emily looked at the screens.
Most were black.
Then one flickered.
A camera feed appeared.
The basement.
Their location.
Daniel was watching them.
His voice came through.
“You finally found it.””
The officer raised his weapon.
“Daniel Cross! Show yourself!””
Daniel laughed.
“You still think this ends with an arrest.””
Emily looked at the screens.
“Where are you?””
No answer.
Instead, another screen turned on.
A room.
A small room.
A child sitting inside.
Emily's breath stopped.
The girl looked young.
Maybe ten.
Maybe eleven.
She sat on the floor.
Holding a stuffed animal.
Alive.
The last girl.
Mara whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Clara stepped closer.
“She was here.””
Emily looked at her.
“You knew?””
Clara nodded.
“I heard her.””
“Why didn't you save her?””
Clara's eyes filled.
“Because I couldn't escape.””
The screen changed.
Daniel appeared.
Not in person.
On camera.
“You see?””
Everyone watched him.
“This is what happens when people interfere.””
The officer shouted:
“Where are you?””
Daniel smiled.
“Close.””
The lights in the basement went off.
Everyone raised their weapons.
Emergency lights turned on.
But this time, only one hallway was illuminated.
A path.
Leading deeper.
Emily looked at Vanessa.
“He wants us to follow.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he always wants to be in control.””
Clara walked toward the hallway.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“He wants me.””
Mara grabbed her arm.
“No.””
“He always wanted me.””
Daniel's voice came through again.
“Clara.””
The girl froze.
“Come home.””
Emily felt sick.
The way he said it.
Like he owned her.
Clara whispered:
“I never belonged to him.””
Then she walked forward.
Mara followed.
Vanessa followed.
Emily looked at Lily.
Then followed too.
They entered the final corridor.
At the end was a large metal door.
Unlike the others.
This one looked old.
Damaged.
Covered in scratches.
Hundreds of scratches.
Emily stopped.
“What happened here?””
Clara stared.
“I tried to get out.””
Mara looked at the marks.
Her face broke.
“Clara…”
“I was six.””
Nobody spoke.
The door opened.
Inside was a room.
A bed.
A table.
A camera.
A small window.
And on the wall—
drawings.
Children's drawings.
Emily walked closer.
They showed families.
Houses.
Sunlight.
Freedom.
But one drawing was different.
A picture of Daniel.
With dozens of children around him.
Above it, written in shaky handwriting:
HE THINKS WE ARE HIS.
The police officers photographed everything.
Then suddenly—
The lights flickered.
A door slammed behind them.
Daniel appeared on the screen inside the room.
“You always were curious, Emily.””
She turned.
“You.””
“You should have walked away.””
Emily stared at the camera.
“Not everyone is like you.””
Daniel smiled.
“You think saving people makes you different.””
“It does.””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“It makes you predictable.””
The room shook.
Vanessa looked around.
“What did you do?””
Daniel answered:
“Nothing.””
A pause.
“You did.””
Everyone froze.
Emily looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
Daniel smiled.
“You brought them all here.””
The floor beneath them clicked.
A mechanism activated.
The walls began moving.
Mara grabbed Lily.
“What is happening?””
Vanessa stared.
Then she understood.
Her face turned white.
“No.””
Emily looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“This room…”
She looked at the walls.
“It was never a prison.””
Daniel's voice echoed.
“It was a test.””
The door began closing.
The police officers rushed toward it.
Too late.
Steel slammed shut.
They were trapped.
Daniel spoke one final time.
“You wanted the truth.””
The lights dimmed.
“Now you get all of it.””
A projector turned on.
An old video appeared.
A young Daniel.
A young Vanessa.
A little Clara.
And another child.
A child nobody had ever seen before.
Emily watched.
Because she recognized the little girl.
The same eyes.
The same face.
The same terrified expression.
She turned slowly toward Lily.
And whispered:
“No…”
Mara looked at the screen.
Then at her daughter.
Daniel's voice came through.
“The last secret of this house…”
The video continued.
Showing a moment fifteen years ago.
A moment that changed everything.
And Emily finally understood.
May you like
Lily was never the first child Daniel wanted.
She was the reason he started.
