Chapter 5: The Secret Beneath the Mansion
The first drop of gasoline hit the floor beside Emily's shoe.
She looked down.
A clear liquid spread across the steel surface.
The smell reached her seconds later.
Her stomach dropped.
“No…”
Mara grabbed Lily and pulled her away from the center of the room.
Vanessa stared at the ceiling.
“How did he do this?””
Emily looked at the timer.
03:58.
03:57.
03:56.
“He doesn't need to explain,” Emily said.
“We need to get out.””
Vanessa walked to the vault door and pressed her palm against it.
“It's electronically sealed.””
“Break it.””
“I can't.””
“You own this place.””
“Not anymore.””
Emily turned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at the walls.
“Daniel built the security system.””
Mara stepped closer.
“And you trusted him.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“I didn't know what he was.””
“You knew enough.””
“I knew he was dangerous.””
“You knew he hurt people.””
“I knew he could destroy my family.””
Mara's eyes filled with anger.
“You always make it about your family.””
Emily looked between them.
The argument sounded like it had been waiting years to happen.
But the timer kept counting down.
03:21.
03:20.
03:19.
Emily stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Both women looked at her.
“I don't care who betrayed who fifteen years ago.””
She pointed at the ceiling.
“That man is trying to burn everyone in this building alive.””
Silence.
Emily continued.
“So unless you two want to keep fighting while we become ashes, figure out how to open the door.””
Vanessa stared at her.
Then, slowly, she nodded.
“You're right.””
Mara looked away.
“She's right.””
Vanessa moved toward the shelves.
“There has to be a manual override.””
“You said he designed it.””
“He did.””
“Then he would know how to open it.””
Vanessa froze.
Emily noticed.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the timer.
03:04.
“He would.””
“Then?””
“Then he would also build a way for himself to enter.””
Mara's expression changed.
“Find it.””
They searched.
Emily moved along the walls, running her hands over the steel panels.
Nothing.
Mara checked the shelves.
Vanessa searched behind the documents.
The smell of gasoline grew stronger.
02:40.
02:39.
02:38.
Lily sat in the corner, covering her ears.
Emily noticed.
She walked over.
“Lily.””
The girl looked up.
“It's okay.””
“No, it isn't.””
Emily sat beside her.
“You're right.””
Lily looked surprised.
“Adults always say that.””
Emily gave a small sad smile.
“Adults say a lot of things when they're scared.””
“Are you scared?””
Emily looked around the vault.
At the timer.
At the gasoline.
At the locked door.
“Yes.””
Lily lowered her eyes.
“Me too.””
Emily took her hand.
“But we're going to get out.””
“How do you know?””
Emily looked toward Vanessa.
She didn't know.
She had no plan.
No weapon.
No idea.
But she couldn't let a child believe there was no hope.
“Because I promised you.””
Lily squeezed her hand.
Then suddenly, the girl looked toward the wall.
“Wait.””
Emily turned.
“What?””
Lily pointed.
“There's a sound.””
Everyone stopped.
At first, Emily heard nothing.
Then—
Click.
Click.
Click.
A faint rhythm came from behind the shelves.
Vanessa rushed over.
She moved a stack of files.
Behind them was a small metal panel.
A keypad.
But the screen wasn't on.
Vanessa touched it.
Nothing happened.
“Password.””
Mara stared at her.
“You don't know it?””
“No.””
“It's your vault.””
“Daniel changed everything.””
Emily looked at the keypad.
“Maybe not.””
“What?””
“He built this for himself.””
She looked at the room.
“The timer.””
The cameras.
The hidden doors.
“He wants us trapped.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“So he wants us to know we're trapped.””
Emily walked closer.
“Maybe the password isn't meant to keep people out.””
She touched the keypad.
“Maybe it's meant to make someone remember.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Emily stared at the numbers.
“How many digits?””
“Six.””
“Daniel's favorite number?””
Vanessa went still.
Mara noticed.
“You know something.””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Vanessa.””
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Sixteen.””
Emily entered 000016.
Nothing.
Timer:
01:49.
“Try again.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He wouldn't use that.””
“Why?””
“Because that's the date my sister disappeared.””
Emily looked at Mara.
“And Daniel knew.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Try the opposite.””
Emily entered 161000.
Nothing.
01:30.
Mara suddenly spoke.
“My birthday.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
“Daniel knew my birthday.””
Vanessa stared.
“Mara…”
“He always said birthdays were important.””
Her face became pale.
“He used it to scare me.””
Emily entered Mara's birthday.
Nothing.
01:12.
The gasoline began dripping faster.
A thin stream ran beneath the shelves.
Emily stepped back.
“Think.””
Vanessa looked around desperately.
Then her eyes landed on the black drive inside the case.
She picked it up.
“The recording.””
“What?””
“The recording started everything.””
Mara shook her head.
“No.””
“Daniel wanted this hidden.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it proves what he did.””
Vanessa looked at the keypad.
“Maybe the password is not a date.””
Emily stared.
“Then what?””
Vanessa held the drive.
“The first words he said.””
Mara's face changed.
“No.””
“What did he say?””
Mara looked away.
“I don't remember.””
“Yes, you do.””
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
Vanessa whispered:
“You never forgot.””
For a moment, Mara looked like she was fifteen years younger.
Like she was back in the moment that destroyed her life.
Then she whispered:
“He said…”
Her voice cracked.
“He said, 'Nobody leaves.''”
Emily entered:
NOBODY
Nothing happened.
The keypad flashed red.
“Wrong.””
Timer:
00:47.
Emily looked at Vanessa.
“More ideas.””
Nobody answered.
The vault shook.
A mechanical sound came from beneath them.
Fire.
The mansion's foundation was heating.
Mara suddenly stepped forward.
“Wait.””
She looked at the keypad.
“The password isn't what he said.””
“What is it?””
“What he meant.””
Emily frowned.
Mara whispered:
“Leave.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“He never wanted people to leave.””
Vanessa understood.
“He wanted control.””
Mara nodded.
“The password is the thing he took from everyone.””
Emily looked at the keypad.
“What did he take?””
Mara answered:
“Freedom.””
Emily entered:
FREEDOM
The screen went black.
Everyone froze.
Then a green light appeared.
ACCESS GRANTED.
The vault door unlocked.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then the door opened.
Cold air rushed in.
They ran.
The corridor outside was filled with smoke.
Emily grabbed Lily.
Vanessa grabbed the evidence case.
Mara followed.
Behind them, the vault door slammed shut.
A second later—
BOOM.
The vault shook.
Fire erupted behind the steel door.
Emily looked back.
“The evidence?””
Vanessa held up the case.
“Safe.””
“How?””
“Because Daniel wanted us to open the vault.””
Emily stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa looked grim.
“He wanted us to take it.””
Mara's face changed.
“Why?””
Vanessa stared down the corridor.
“Because he wants us to bring it to him.””
A voice echoed from the darkness.
“You finally understand.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel.
Emily slowly turned.
He stood at the end of the hallway.
No smoke.
No panic.
Just that same calm expression.
Vanessa raised her gun.
Daniel smiled.
“Still carrying that?””
“You're not leaving.””
“I never planned to.””
Mara stepped forward.
“You killed my mother.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I saved her from becoming like you.””
Mara's face twisted.
“You don't get to talk about my mother.””
Daniel ignored her.
His eyes moved to Lily.
“Come here.””
Lily immediately hid behind Emily.
Daniel looked disappointed.
“She doesn't know the truth.””
Emily stared.
“What truth?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Tell her.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Tell Emily what happened the night Mara disappeared.””
Mara whispered:
“Don't.””
Daniel smiled.
“Go ahead.””
Emily looked at Vanessa.
“What happened?””
The mansion shook again.
Pieces of the ceiling fell.
Vanessa lowered her gun.
Her voice was barely audible.
“I didn't save Mara.””
Emily waited.
“I helped Daniel take her.””
Silence.
Mara looked at Vanessa.
The pain on her face was worse than anger.
“You…”
Emily stared.
“What?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
Mara stepped backward.
“You betrayed me.””
“I was trying to save you.””
“You gave me to him.””
“I didn't know what he would do.””
Daniel laughed.
“And there it is.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The truth.””
He stepped closer.
“Vanessa Vale spent fifteen years pretending she was the victim.””
Vanessa raised the gun again.
“Shut up.””
Daniel smiled.
“But she was there.””
Emily felt sick.
Mara looked at Vanessa.
“Were you?””
Vanessa couldn't answer.
That was enough.
Mara closed her eyes.
Lily began crying.
Emily felt the ground beneath her shift.
Everything she believed had changed.
Vanessa wasn't just a woman hiding a child.
She was part of the reason the child was hunted.
Daniel watched the realization spread across Emily's face.
“Now you understand.””
Emily looked at him.
“What?””
“Everyone in this house is guilty.””
He pointed at Vanessa.
“Her.””
Then Mara.
“Her.””
Then himself.
“Me.””
Finally Lily.
Emily stepped protectively in front of the girl.
“Not her.””
Daniel smiled.
“Especially her.””
Emily froze.
“What?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small photograph.
He held it up.
It was old.
A picture of Mara.
A baby.
And another woman.
Emily looked at Lily.
Then at the photograph.
Daniel said:
“Because Lily isn't just Mara's daughter.””
Mara's face went pale.
“Daniel…”
He smiled.
“She is mine.””
The hallway went silent.
Emily looked at Lily.
The child looked confused.
“Mommy?””
Mara stepped forward.
“Don't listen to him.””
Daniel continued.
“Ask Vanessa.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Her silence was devastating.
Emily whispered:
“Is it true?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed the last piece of trust in the room.
Lily stepped backward.
“No.””
Mara dropped to her knees.
“Lily, listen to me.””
“No!””
The child ran.
Emily chased her.
But before she reached her—
Daniel moved.
Fast.
He grabbed Lily's arm.
Emily screamed.
“Let her go!””
Daniel looked at her calmly.
“Now you understand why she was worth all this.””
Emily lunged forward.
Vanessa raised her gun.
Mara cried out.
And somewhere inside the burning mansion, every remaining door unlocked at once.
Daniel pulled Lily closer.
“The game is over.””
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“No more hiding.””
A deep alarm sounded.
The front gates opened.
Police rushed into the mansion.
Daniel smiled.
“Perfect timing.””
Emily frowned.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
“Because now everyone will see who the real monster is.””
May you like
And before anyone could stop him, Daniel stepped into the smoke—
taking Lily with him.
