Calm

Chapter 6: The Daughter He Claimed

The smoke swallowed him.

One second Daniel Cross stood in front of them, holding Lily's arm.

The next second he disappeared into the burning corridor.

Emily ran after him.

“Lily!””

Her voice echoed through the mansion.

Behind her, Mara screamed her daughter's name.

“LILY!””

Vanessa grabbed Emily's shoulder.

“Stop!””

Emily turned sharply.

“Let go of me.””

“You don't know where he is taking her.””

“She is a child!””

“And he knows this house better than anyone.””

Emily pulled away.

“So we just let him walk away?””

“No.””

Vanessa looked toward the smoke.

“We think.””

Emily stared at her.

“Thinking is what got that little girl trapped behind a wall.””

The words hit harder than Emily expected.

Vanessa went silent.

Mara stood frozen nearby.

Her face was broken.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Broken.

“My daughter…”

Emily looked at her.

“Mara.””

“He took her again.””

Emily stepped closer.

“We're getting her back.””

Mara looked at her.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

Mara looked toward the corridor where Daniel vanished.

“He doesn't want Lily.””

Emily frowned.

“He said she was worth all this.””

“He doesn't want her because she's his daughter.””

The mansion shook.

A section of the ceiling collapsed somewhere upstairs.

Dust filled the air.

Emily grabbed Mara's arm.

“Then why?””

Mara's voice dropped.

“Because Daniel has spent his entire life collecting things he believes belong to him.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He doesn't love people.””

“He owns them.””

Emily looked between them.

“And Lily?””

Mara wiped her tears.

“She is the one thing he couldn't control.””

A fire alarm screamed.

Emergency lights flashed.

Then suddenly, the mansion speakers came alive.

Daniel's voice filled every room.

“Ladies and gentlemen…”

The three women froze.

“Thank you for your patience.””

Emily looked around.

“He's talking to everyone.””

Vanessa's face turned pale.

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“I apologize for tonight's unfortunate events.””

A strange calmness filled his voice.

“As you can imagine, there has been a misunderstanding.””

Emily almost laughed.

“A misunderstanding?””

Daniel ignored her.

“Some individuals have attempted to damage my reputation.””

Mara whispered:

“He's going to blame us.””

Daniel continued.

“Fortunately, I have evidence.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“No.””

Emily looked at her.

“What?””

“He has the files.””

“What files?””

“The ones he wanted us to find.””

Mara looked confused.

“But we took them.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She opened the evidence case.

Inside, the documents were still there.

But something was missing.

The black drive.

Emily stared.

“He took the recording.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“That was his plan.””

Daniel's voice continued.

“The people responsible for tonight's chaos are currently inside the mansion.””

The speakers crackled.

“They are dangerous.””

Emily felt her stomach turn.

The guests.

The police.

Everyone outside was listening.

Daniel was rewriting everything.

“Who is going to believe us?”” Mara whispered.

Vanessa looked toward the entrance.

“The truth.””

Emily looked at her.

“The truth doesn't matter if nobody hears it.””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Because Emily was right.

Outside, sirens grew louder.

Police officers entered the mansion.

Flashlights moved through the smoke.

People shouted.

The guests were finally being evacuated.

But Daniel was already controlling the story.

A police officer appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Hands where we can see them!””

Emily raised her hands.

“Wait!””

The officer aimed his weapon.

“Step away from the child.””

Emily froze.

“What child?””

The officer looked confused.

Then another officer approached.

“Where is the girl?””

Emily stared.

“What?””

The officer looked at Vanessa.

“You reported a hostage situation.””

Vanessa said nothing.

The officer's expression hardened.

“Mrs. Vale?””

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“What did you tell them?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Nothing.””

The officer lowered his radio.

“Mr. Cross informed us that a woman matching your description kidnapped a child.””

Mara laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

Emily looked toward the speakers.

Daniel had planned everything.

The police believed they were the criminals.

The officer stepped closer.

“Where is Lily?””

Emily looked around.

She almost couldn't believe the answer.

They were asking her.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Her.

The waitress.

“I don't know.””

The officer's eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?””

Emily hesitated.

“Emily Carter.””

“Your occupation?””

“I work here.””

“As a waitress?””

“Yes.””

The officer exchanged a glance with his partner.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“You involved employees?””

Emily felt anger rising.

“She saved the girl.””

The officer ignored her.

“Mrs. Vale, where is Daniel Cross?””

Vanessa looked toward the burning corridor.

“Finding him is not your priority.””

The officer frowned.

“What?””

“Finding Lily is.””

A voice suddenly came from behind them.

“Actually…”

Everyone turned.

Daniel stood near the grand staircase.

The firelight moved behind him.

And beside him—

Lily.

Emily's heart jumped.

“Lily!””

The child looked at her.

She was crying.

But she was standing.

Daniel had one hand on her shoulder.

Not holding tightly.

Not appearing violent.

That was what made it terrifying.

He looked like a father.

The perfect image of a concerned parent.

The officers immediately lowered their weapons.

One approached him.

“Mr. Cross?””

Daniel nodded.

“She's safe.””

Emily stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She is not safe.””

Daniel sighed.

“Emily.””

The way he said her name made her skin crawl.

“You have been through a traumatic evening.””

“Don't do that.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend you're helping.””

Daniel looked genuinely hurt.

“I'm trying to protect my daughter.””

Lily looked at him.

“No.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked down.

“Sweetheart.””

Lily shook her head.

“You hurt Mommy.””

A few officers exchanged looks.

Daniel remained calm.

“That is not true.””

“Yes it is.””

“Lily.””

“You hurt everyone.””

Daniel's expression changed.

Only for a moment.

But Emily saw it.

The mask slipped.

Then he smiled.

“She's confused.””

Mara pushed forward.

“She knows exactly who you are.””

The officers moved between them.

“Stay back.””

Mara looked desperate.

“She is my daughter.””

Daniel looked at the officers.

“And that woman has been missing for fifteen years.””

The officer frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“It means she is unstable.””

Mara looked like she had been slapped.

Emily stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him.””

The officer looked at her.

“Ma'am, please step back.””

“He is manipulating you.””

Daniel calmly removed a small folder from his jacket.

“I expected this.””

Vanessa's face changed.

“No.””

Daniel handed it to the officer.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Reports.

Emily couldn't see everything.

But she saw enough.

Her own name.

Vanessa's name.

Mara's name.

Daniel had prepared a story.

The officer looked through the papers.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

Daniel sighed.

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

“That these women have been working together.””

Emily stared.

“That is insane.””

Daniel looked at her sadly.

“Is it?””

He turned to the officer.

“Tonight they broke into restricted areas of my home.””

He pointed toward the burned hallway.

“They caused the fire.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“They stole confidential documents.””

Then Mara.

“And they attempted to take my daughter.””

Emily felt sick.

The room seemed to spin.

He was turning everything around.

The truth sounded impossible.

The lie sounded organized.

The officer looked at Vanessa.

“Where are the documents?””

Vanessa held the evidence case.

“Here.””

The officer opened it.

“Files from my house.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

Emily almost shouted.

“He wanted us to take them!””

Nobody listened.

The officer looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Cross, are you pressing charges?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at Emily.

Then Vanessa.

“Yes.””

The word landed like a weapon.

“Against all three.””

Mara stepped forward.

“No.””

The officer raised his hand.

“Don't move.””

Emily looked at Lily.

The girl was staring at Daniel.

Not with fear.

With something else.

Anger.

And sadness.

Emily noticed something.

Lily was hiding her right hand.

She walked closer.

“Lily.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Stay away.””

Emily ignored him.

“Lily, show me your hand.””

The child hesitated.

Then slowly opened her fingers.

Inside her palm was a small piece of paper.

Emily's heart raced.

Daniel saw it.

His expression changed instantly.

“Give that to me.””

Lily closed her fist.

The officer noticed.

“What is it?””

Daniel moved.

Too quickly.

The officer stepped between them.

“Mr. Cross.””

Daniel stopped.

Emily carefully took the paper from Lily.

It was folded several times.

She opened it.

Three words were written in messy handwriting.

NOT HIS DAUGHTER.

Emily looked up.

Daniel was watching her.

The room became silent.

Vanessa whispered:

“Lily…”

The child looked at her.

“I found it.””

“What?””

“Mommy hid it.””

Mara covered her mouth.

“What did you find?””

Lily pointed at Daniel.

“He lied.””

Daniel smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“She doesn't understand.””

Emily unfolded the paper completely.

There was more.

A name.

A date.

A signature.

Her eyes widened.

Because the signature belonged to Daniel Cross.

And beneath it was a sentence:

PATERNITY RESULTS ALTERED.

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Mara took the paper.

She read it.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“You changed the test.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You changed the test to make everyone believe Lily was yours.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

Mara laughed through tears.

“After fifteen years, that's the best you have?””

The officer took the paper.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“That's stolen property.””

The officer looked at it.

Then at Daniel.

“Is this your signature?””

Silence.

Emily watched his face.

For the first time tonight…

Daniel Cross looked uncertain.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

The officer looked toward his partner.

“Run this.””

Daniel's voice became colder.

“This is a misunderstanding.””

The officer ignored him.

A second officer approached.

“Sir?””

The first officer handed him the paper.

They whispered.

Emily couldn't hear.

Daniel looked around.

Calculating.

Then his eyes found Lily.

The child immediately moved closer to Emily.

Daniel saw that.

And something dark appeared in his expression.

Not anger.

Possession.

He whispered:

“You have no idea what you've started.””

Emily stepped in front of Lily.

“You're finished.””

Daniel smiled.

“No.””

He looked toward the mansion.

Toward the hidden rooms.

Toward the evidence.

Toward the secrets buried beneath the walls.

“You still don't know the worst part.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked directly at her.

“You think Lily was the secret?””

Nobody moved.

Daniel's smile returned.

“She wasn't.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Then what was?””

Daniel looked toward the burning mansion.

And said:

“The girl you buried fifteen years ago.””

Mara went completely still.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Tell them.””

Vanessa's face turned white.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You owe them the truth.””

Mara grabbed Vanessa's arm.

“What girl?””

Vanessa looked at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

And then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“There was another child.””

The sirens outside continued.

The fire continued burning.

And Lily looked up at Emily with terrified eyes.

Because even she knew—

the story they uncovered tonight was only the beginning.
