Chapter 7: The Child Everyone Forgot

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The mansion burned around them.

Firefighters shouted outside.

Police officers moved through the smoke.

Guests whispered among themselves, trying to understand the impossible scene unfolding in front of them.

But inside the grand entrance hall, everything stopped.

Because Vanessa Vale had just admitted there was another child.

Emily stared at her.

“Another child?””

Vanessa looked away.

Mara's face had gone completely pale.

“What child?””

Daniel watched them carefully.

He looked almost satisfied.

Like someone who had finally opened a locked door.

“The one you never found.””

Mara turned toward him.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel smiled.

“Ask Vanessa.””

Everyone looked at the mansion owner.

Vanessa stood motionless.

For years, she had carried herself like someone who controlled every room she entered.

But now she looked small.

Afraid.

The police officer noticed.

“Mrs. Vale?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Who is this child?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Her name was Clara.””

Mara stepped backward.

“No.””

Emily looked at her.

“You know that name?””

Mara didn't respond.

Her eyes stayed fixed on Vanessa.

“No…”

Daniel's smile disappeared slightly.

“You remember.””

Mara shook her head.

“No.””

“You do.””

“I don't.””

“You were there.””

Mara covered her mouth.

Emily felt the tension between them.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked toward the burning staircase.

Her voice was quiet.

“Fifteen years ago, before Lily was born…”

She stopped.

“Before Daniel became what he is now…”

Daniel laughed.

“Don't pretend I changed overnight.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“There was a girl.””

Emily looked at Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.

“How old?””

“Six.””

Mara whispered:

“Clara.””

Emily looked at her.

“Mara?””

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

“She was my sister.””

The room became silent.

Emily felt like the air had disappeared.

“You had another sister?””

Mara nodded slowly.

“My little sister.””

Daniel watched her.

“She was the first one.””

Emily looked at him.

“The first one?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Vanessa did.

“The first child Daniel took.””

The officers immediately became more alert.

One stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“Fifteen years ago, Daniel was already powerful.””

She glanced at him.

“He had money. Influence. People who protected him.””

Daniel said nothing.

“He knew how to make problems disappear.””

Mara whispered:

“And Clara was a problem.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“No.””

Mara's voice broke.

“She saw something.””

Everyone looked at her.

Emily asked softly:

“What did she see?””

Mara looked down.

“She saw Daniel hurt someone.””

Daniel shook his head.

“A child's memory.””

Mara ignored him.

“She told me.””

“When?””

“The night she disappeared.””

Emily looked toward Vanessa.

“And you?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I found Clara.””

Mara stared.

“You found her?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

That was the answer.

Mara's expression changed.

“You knew.””

Emily felt the anger building.

“You knew where she was?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

Mara stepped closer.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because Daniel threatened you.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“He said if I told anyone, you would disappear too.””

Mara laughed bitterly.

“And you believed him?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I saw what he was capable of.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Careful, Vanessa.””

Everyone looked at him.

He smiled.

“You're making yourself sound innocent.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“I am not innocent.””

The confession surprised everyone.

“I made mistakes.””

She looked at Mara.

“Terrible mistakes.””

Mara's voice was barely audible.

“You let him take her.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than an excuse.

Emily watched Mara's face collapse.

“She was alive?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then:

“Yes.””

Mara's breathing stopped.

“For how long?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“For how long?””

“Three years.””

Mara covered her mouth.

Emily felt sick.

Three years.

A child had been alive somewhere.

And everyone thought she was gone.

“What happened after?””

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

“He moved her.””

“Where?””

Daniel smiled.

“You still don't know.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“I searched.””

“You lied.””

“I searched.””

“You hid.””

“I searched!””

The entire room went quiet.

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“I searched every place I knew Daniel used.””

Mara stared.

“And?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I found the room.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Another hidden room?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Not here.””

“Where?””

Daniel answered.

“My old house.””

Everyone looked at him.

Emily frowned.

“Old house?””

Daniel smiled.

“You think this mansion is the only place I built?””

The police officer stepped forward.

“Mr. Cross.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes?””

“How many properties do you own?””

Daniel smiled.

“Enough.””

The officer's expression changed.

Emily realized something.

This wasn't just one house.

This wasn't one crime scene.

This was a network.

Vanessa continued.

“When I found Clara…”

Her voice broke.

“She wasn't the same.””

Mara closed her eyes.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“He trained her.””

The word made everyone uncomfortable.

“Trained?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He convinced her that nobody was coming.””

Daniel's expression remained calm.

“She was confused.””

“She was six.””

“She was weak.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You're disgusting.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You still don't understand.””

“No.””

Emily pointed toward Lily.

“I understand enough.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

Something cold passed through his eyes.

“You think saving one child makes you a hero?””

“No.””

Emily's voice was steady.

“It makes me someone who chose to help when everyone else chose silence.””

The words hit Vanessa.

She looked away.

Daniel smiled.

“You're very brave.””

Emily didn't answer.

“Brave people are usually the easiest to break.””

Before Emily could respond, one of the officers' radios suddenly crackled.

“Officer down on the east side.””

Everyone turned.

“What happened?””

The radio repeated:

“Officer down. Possible suspect movement.””

The officer touched his radio.

“Unit three, report.””

Static.

Then a voice.

Not the officer.

Daniel's voice.

“Can everyone hear me?””

The room froze.

The radio was in the officer's hand.

Daniel looked amused.

Emily stared.

“How?””

Daniel shrugged.

“You'd be surprised what money buys.””

The officer immediately removed the radio.

But the voice continued.

“Don't worry.””

A pause.

“I don't plan to leave.””

Vanessa looked around.

“He has another way out.””

Daniel smiled.

“I have many.””

The police officer turned to his team.

“Secure all exits.””

Daniel laughed.

“Too late.””

The mansion lights suddenly changed.

The emergency red glow disappeared.

A normal warm light returned.

Everyone looked around.

The fire was still burning.

But the alarms stopped.

Emily felt uneasy.

Something was wrong.

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

“The house is stable now.””

The officer frowned.

“How?””

Daniel smiled.

“Because it was never meant to burn.””

Vanessa's face changed.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You thought the fire was an attack.””

He stepped closer.

“It was a message.””

“To who?””

Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.

“You.””

Silence.

Vanessa stared.

“What message?””

Daniel's expression became colder.

“You were supposed to remember.””

A terrible realization crossed Vanessa's face.

“No…”

Emily looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The fire.””

Mara looked confused.

“What about it?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

“It happened before.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Where?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Fifteen years ago.””

The room went silent.

“The night Clara disappeared.””

Mara stepped backward.

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“Now you remember.””

Mara shook her head.

“No.””

“You forgot the details.””

“I didn't.””

“You did.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Everyone forgets what hurts too much.””

Lily covered her ears.

“Stop.””

Daniel ignored her.

“The fire tonight was exactly like the first one.””

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The house burned.””

“Whose house?””

Daniel answered.

“My family's.””

Emily looked at him.

“And Clara was there.””

Daniel nodded.

“She disappeared during the fire.””

Mara's voice broke.

“Because of you.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

“Because you took her.””

“No.””

“Because you killed her.””

Daniel smiled.

Then he said something that made everyone freeze.

“She isn't dead.””

Nobody moved.

Mara stared.

“What?””

Daniel looked toward the burning upper floors.

“She survived.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Impossible.””

Daniel smiled.

“You looked for a dead girl.””

Emily felt cold.

“Then where is she?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward Lily.

And Lily suddenly began shaking.

Emily noticed.

“Lily?””

The child stared at the staircase.

Her face had lost all color.

“Lily, what is it?””

She whispered:

“I know that sound.””

Everyone looked confused.

“What sound?””

The child pointed upward.

A faint noise came from the second floor.

A tapping.

Slow.

Repeated.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Emily's blood turned cold.

It was the same sound that had started everything.

The sound behind the painting.

Mara whispered:

“No…”

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

“Daniel.””

He smiled.

“Yes.””

Emily stared.

“What is happening?””

Daniel looked at the ceiling.

“The first girl is awake.””

A police officer raised his weapon.

“Everybody stay where you are.””

But nobody listened.

Because from above them came a child's voice.

Weak.

Terrified.

Calling one name.

“Vanessa…”

Vanessa froze.

She knew that voice.

She had spent fifteen years trying to forget it.

The voice came again.

“Vanessa…”

Mara began crying.

“Clara.””

The mansion went silent.

May you like

Then the voice whispered:

“Why did you leave me?””
