Chapter 8: The Girl in the Burning Room
Nobody moved.
Not the police officers.
Not the guests.
Not even Daniel.
For the first time all night, his expression changed.
Just slightly.
But Emily saw it.
Fear.
A tiny crack in the confidence of a man who had controlled everyone around him for years.
The voice from upstairs came again.
“Vanessa…”
A small voice.
A child's voice.
A voice filled with pain.
Mara covered her mouth.
“Clara.””
The name escaped like a prayer.
Vanessa stood frozen at the bottom of the staircase.
She looked older suddenly.
Not like the powerful woman who owned the mansion.
Not like the person everyone feared.
Just a woman standing in front of the biggest regret of her life.
Daniel watched her.
“Go ahead.””
Vanessa didn't look at him.
“What?””
“Go see her.””
His smile returned.
“She has waited a long time.””
Mara turned toward him.
“You knew.””
Daniel said nothing.
“You knew she was alive.””
Still nothing.
“You knew this whole time.””
Daniel calmly adjusted his jacket.
“Yes.””
Mara's eyes filled with rage.
“You let me believe my sister was dead.””
“She was safer that way.””
“Safer?””
Mara stepped forward.
“You locked a child away!””
Daniel's expression remained cold.
“You don't understand what she became.””
Emily looked at him.
“What she became?””
Daniel glanced upstairs.
“She learned.””
“Learned what?””
“That people leave.””
The words sounded almost sincere.
Almost like he believed himself.
Emily hated that more than anything.
“You did that to her.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Careful.””
“No.””
Emily stepped forward.
“You don't get to pretend you're protecting anyone.””
The police officers watched silently.
They were beginning to understand.
The documents.
The hidden rooms.
The children.
The lies.
But Daniel still had control.
Because men like him survived by making people doubt what they saw.
Vanessa finally moved.
One step toward the staircase.
Then another.
Mara followed.
Emily grabbed Lily's hand.
“We stay together.””
Lily nodded.
Daniel watched them.
“You really think going upstairs will fix everything?””
Vanessa stopped.
“What do you want?””
Daniel smiled.
“I want you to remember.””
“Remember what?””
“The night you chose.””
Vanessa looked back at him.
“I didn't choose.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“You always say that.””
The lights flickered.
A deep mechanical sound came from above.
The mansion groaned.
Emily looked toward the ceiling.
“Is the building safe?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel smiled.
“No.””
The officers immediately reacted.
“What did you do?””
Daniel looked at them.
“I didn't do anything.””
“Then why say that?””
“Because the house was designed to remember.””
Emily frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“The old wing.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
“No.””
Mara looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“The west wing.””
Emily looked confused.
“What about it?””
Vanessa stared upward.
“That was where Clara disappeared.””
A silence followed.
Then the tapping came again.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Emily felt every hair on her arms rise.
The sound was coming from the west side of the mansion.
Not the hidden room behind the painting.
Another place.
Another secret.
A police officer raised his radio.
“Units, search the upper west wing.””
Static answered.
Then:
“No access.””
The officer frowned.
“What?””
“West wing doors are sealed.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Of course.””
Emily looked at her.
“What?””
“Daniel rebuilt it.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“To recreate that night.””
Mara's voice shook.
“You knew this would happen.””
Daniel didn't deny it.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Because she needed to see it.””
Mara stepped between them.
“Who?””
Daniel smiled.
“Vanessa.””
The mansion lights suddenly went out.
Everyone shouted.
A second later, old emergency lights turned on.
But these were different.
They were yellow.
Flickering.
Like the lights of an abandoned building.
A recording began playing through the speakers.
A child's laughter.
Emily froze.
Then another sound.
A woman crying.
A door slamming.
A little girl screaming.
Mara covered her ears.
“No.””
Vanessa looked like she couldn't breathe.
“Turn it off.””
Daniel remained still.
The recording continued.
A young Vanessa's voice echoed through the mansion.
“Clara, stay here.””
Emily looked at her.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
The recording continued.
“You'll be safe.””
Then Clara's voice.
“Don't leave me.””
The sound of footsteps.
Then Vanessa's voice.
“I'll come back.””
The recording stopped.
Silence.
Mara looked at Vanessa.
“You left her.””
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Mara's face broke.
“You promised.””
“I know.””
“You promised.””
“I know!””
Vanessa's voice finally broke.
“I know!””
Everyone stared.
Vanessa covered her face.
“I was twenty-six.””
Nobody spoke.
“I thought I was helping.””
Mara shook her head.
“You left a six-year-old girl in a burning house.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“No.””
“What?””
“I left her in a room.””
The words came out slowly.
“Before the fire started.””
Emily felt cold.
“What room?””
Vanessa looked toward the west wing.
“The room behind the wall.””
Mara stared.
“The painting.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Emily's heart dropped.
The same kind of hidden room.
The same nightmare.
Only fifteen years earlier.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Because he told me to.””
Mara turned toward Daniel.
“You made her do it.””
Daniel shrugged.
“She was scared.””
Vanessa looked disgusted.
“You threatened her.””
“Yes.””
“You threatened to kill my family.””
“Yes.””
“You threatened Mara.””
“Yes.””
Daniel didn't even try to hide it.
Emily stared.
“You admit everything?””
Daniel smiled.
“Admitting something doesn't matter if nobody can prove it.””
The police officer stepped forward.
“We can prove enough.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Can you?””
The officer hesitated.
Emily noticed.
Daniel noticed too.
His confidence returned.
“Exactly.””
The officer's radio crackled.
This time a voice came through.
“Officer, we found something.””
Everyone looked.
“What?””
The radio operator sounded disturbed.
“Multiple rooms.””
“Explain.””
“Hidden rooms.””
Silence.
“Evidence everywhere.””
Daniel's expression changed.
Only briefly.
But Emily saw it.
The police officer looked at him.
“Mr. Cross…”
Daniel interrupted.
“Search carefully.””
The officer frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel smiled.
“Because you may not like what you find.””
A terrible feeling entered Emily's chest.
“What did you do?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I prepared.””
“For what?””
“For this moment.””
The officer received another radio message.
He listened.
Then looked toward Vanessa.
“Mrs. Vale.””
Vanessa turned.
“What?””
“We found a room with your name on it.””
Vanessa went pale.
Mara stared.
“What room?””
The officer swallowed.
“A room containing photographs.””
“Of what?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Of Clara.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Daniel smiled.
Emily felt the trap closing.
He had planned this.
Every piece.
Every discovery.
Every accusation.
He had arranged everything so that Vanessa looked guilty.
The officer continued.
“And we found recordings.””
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
“Recordings of you speaking to her.””
Mara looked at Vanessa.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Emily stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
The mansion owner looked at her.
Her eyes were full of guilt.
“I begged her to forgive me.””
Mara froze.
“You talked to her?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After Daniel moved her.””
Mara's voice cracked.
“You knew where she was.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I found her.””
“Then why didn't you bring her home?””
Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.
“Because she didn't want to come.””
Mara stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“She was afraid.””
“Of Daniel?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“Of me.””
The words hurt everyone.
Emily looked upstairs.
The tapping had stopped.
The voice was gone.
Then suddenly—
The west wing doors opened.
By themselves.
A cold wind swept through the entrance hall.
The officers raised their weapons.
Daniel smiled.
“She's ready.””
Nobody wanted to ask.
But Emily did.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the dark hallway.
“Clara.””
A figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
Small.
Thin.
Standing barefoot.
A girl.
Older now.
Maybe twenty-one.
Her hair hung over her face.
Her clothes were old.
Her skin pale.
Everyone froze.
Mara whispered:
“No…”
The girl stepped into the light.
She looked at Vanessa.
Not Daniel.
Vanessa.
And said:
“You came back.””
Vanessa started crying.
“Clara.””
The young woman tilted her head.
“You promised.””
Vanessa couldn't speak.
“You promised you'd return.””
“I tried.””
“No.””
Clara's voice remained calm.
“You forgot me.””
Mara stepped forward.
“Clara.””
The young woman looked at her.
For the first time, emotion appeared.
Confusion.
Then recognition.
“Mara?””
Mara broke down.
“My baby sister…”
Clara stared.
“You got old.””
Mara cried.
“You were supposed to grow with me.””
Clara looked away.
Daniel watched silently.
Emily noticed something.
He wasn't smiling anymore.
He was studying Clara.
Like he was afraid of what she might say.
Clara looked at Daniel.
And spoke quietly.
“You told me everyone abandoned me.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“You know it's true.””
Clara shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“Because I remember everything.””
Daniel went still.
Emily felt the room change.
Clara continued.
“I remember what you did.””
Daniel's voice became sharper.
“Clara.””
“I remember the rooms.””
The police officers exchanged looks.
“I remember the girls.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Clara looked directly at him.
“I remember their names.””
Silence.
Emily looked at Daniel.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Clara took another step.
“And I remember where you hid them.””
The entire mansion went silent.
Mara stared.
“Clara…”
Clara looked at the police officers.
Then said:
“There are more.””
The officer raised his weapon slightly.
“More what?””
Clara answered:
“More children.””
Daniel's face finally changed.
The mask disappeared.
And for the first time that night…
everyone saw the real Daniel Cross.
Not a businessman.
Not a respected man.
Not a father.
A predator who had just realized his biggest secret was no longer buried.
Clara pointed toward the basement.
“Under this house.””
Emily felt a chill.
“What?””
Clara whispered:
“He didn't build rooms to hide people.””
Everyone listened.
“He built rooms to collect them.””
Daniel suddenly moved.
Fast.
He grabbed the nearest officer's weapon.
Chaos exploded.
The gunshot echoed.
People screamed.
Emily grabbed Lily.
Vanessa pulled Mara down.
And Clara stood in the middle of the chaos, watching Daniel run toward the basement stairs.
Emily looked at her.
“Why did he run?””
Clara answered softly.
“Because he knows.””
“What?””
Clara looked toward the basement.
“He knows the last girl he took…”
May you like
She paused.
“…is still alive.””
