Chapter 9: The Children Who Were Switched

Victoria read the letter again.

*Your children were never the two babies you took home.*

The words refused to make sense.

She looked at Adrian.

Then Emma.

Then Ethan.

Three faces.

Three lives built on secrets.

And somewhere beneath all of them was a truth so carefully buried that even Charles Ashford had been terrified of it.

“Tell me everything,” Victoria said.

Ethan stood in the doorway of the carriage house.

“I don't know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

He looked at Adrian.

“For twenty-five years, I believed you were my brother.””

Adrian stared at him.

“You knew me?””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I knew there was another boy with my name.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

“It is the only answer I have.””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“We need to leave.””

Victoria turned.

“No one is leaving.””

Jonathan stared at her.

“The shooter is still out there.””

“I don't care.””

“You should.””

“I spent twenty-five years grieving.””

Her voice broke.

“I am done being afraid of the truth.””

Evelyn looked toward the door.

“She is right.””

Jonathan glared at her.

“You've caused enough damage.””

“I didn't create this.””

“You protected it.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“And I'm done doing that.””

She pulled a small black notebook from her handbag.

“This belonged to Charles.””

Adrian took it.

The pages were filled with dates, initials, and coded names.

Victoria recognized several.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Nurses.

Then one entry caught Adrian's eye.

*October 14 — Twin transfer complete.*

Beneath it:

*A delivered to V.*

*E delivered to C.*

Adrian frowned.

“Who are V and C?””

Evelyn answered.

“Victoria and Charles.””

“No.””

She pointed at another line.

“Look closer.””

Adrian read it again.

“V isn't Victoria.””

Victoria's stomach tightened.

“Who is V?””

Evelyn's answer was quiet.

“Veronica.””

Jonathan closed his eyes.

Victoria looked at him.

“Who is Veronica?””

Jonathan said nothing.

Ethan stepped forward.

“My mother.””

Victoria stared.

“Your mother?””

Ethan nodded.

“Veronica Whitmore.””

Jonathan's face tightened.

“She was my wife.””

“Your first wife,” Ethan said.

Emma looked between them.

“Then why is she connected to my birth?””

Jonathan didn't answer.

Ethan did.

“Because Veronica wasn't just Jonathan's wife.””

He turned a page.

“She was the woman who delivered the twins from the hospital.””

Victoria's blood turned cold.

“That isn't possible.””

“It is.””

Evelyn pointed to the entry.

“V received A.””

Victoria understood.

“Amelia.””

“Yes.””

“Then I never took Amelia home.””

“No.””

“Who did I take?””

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“Lucas.””

Adrian's expression changed.

The name struck him with strange force.

Not familiarity.

Something worse.

Recognition.

“I know that name.””

Victoria stared.

“How?””

Adrian pressed his fingers against his temple.

“A woman used to call me Lucas.””

He looked terrified.

“When I was little.””

Victoria felt her heart break.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Ethan went still.

“I do.””

Everyone turned.

“Who?””

Ethan looked at Jonathan.

“Your wife.””

Jonathan's face became pale.

“Veronica.””

Victoria sat down.

“Why would she call Adrian Lucas?””

Ethan opened the notebook again.

“There are more notes.””

He turned several pages.

A handwritten sentence appeared.

*Lucas must remain with the Ashfords. Ethan must remain hidden. Amelia must never know her real name.*

Emma whispered, “Why?””

Evelyn answered.

“Because the three children were connected to one inheritance.””

Adrian frowned.

“Three?””

“Yes.””

Victoria looked up.

“Three children?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Charles didn't just have two babies to deal with.””

She looked at Emma.

“He had three.””

Silence.

A fourth life.

A child no one had mentioned.

A child erased so completely that even Victoria had never known to mourn it.

“Who was the third?”” Adrian asked.

Evelyn looked at Jonathan.

Jonathan's eyes closed.

“Veronica's daughter.””

Emma froze.

“Your daughter?””

Jonathan nodded.

“She was born eight months before the twins.””

Victoria stared.

“So Charles knew.””

“He knew about her existence,” Jonathan said.

“He didn't know where she was.””

“Who was she?””

Jonathan didn't answer.

Evelyn did.

“Nora Vale's daughter.””

Emma stopped breathing.

“Nora had two children?””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“She had one.””

She looked at Victoria.

“Emma.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“The child Charles called Veronica's daughter was not Veronica's.””

Victoria felt dizzy.

“They switched another baby.””

“Yes.””

Emma's voice became desperate.

“Who was I switched with?””

Evelyn looked toward the rainy darkness.

“That is what Charles spent his life trying to discover.””

Adrian suddenly noticed something.

The notebook had a final page.

A single sentence was written there.

*The girl is not the heir. The boy is.*

He turned the page.

Nothing.

Then he noticed a faint mark beneath the paper.

He ran his thumb over it.

A hidden layer peeled away.

Underneath was another name.

*JONAH.*

Ethan stared.

“What's Jonah?””

Jonathan's face changed.

“It's a person.””

“Who?””

Jonathan didn't answer.

Ethan grabbed his coat.

“Who is Jonah?””

“My son.””

Adrian looked at Jonathan.

“I thought Ethan was your son.””

Jonathan's eyes filled with something like shame.

“I have two sons.””

Victoria whispered, “And one daughter.””

Jonathan nodded.

“Jonah was born before Veronica.””

Emma stared.

“Then where is he?””

Jonathan looked at Adrian.

“That's why Charles was afraid.””

A strange silence filled the room.

Adrian finally understood.

The Ashford bloodline had never depended solely on the twins.

There had been another heir.

A legitimate male child.

A boy whose existence could destroy every arrangement Charles had made.

“Jonah is alive,” Jonathan said.

“Where?””

Jonathan looked at the darkness outside.

“With the man who fired the gun.””

Everyone froze.

Ethan whispered, “Charles Jr.””

Jonathan nodded.

“He isn't Charles's son.””

Adrian's voice became cold.

“Then whose son is he?””

Jonathan looked directly at Victoria.

“Yours.””

The world seemed to stop.

Victoria stared at him.

“No.””

Jonathan's eyes filled with tears.

“You had a son before the twins.””

“No.””

“You don't remember because Charles erased the pregnancy from every record.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I would've known.””

“You were nineteen.””

Jonathan's voice cracked.

“Charles took the boy before you ever knew he existed.””

Adrian stepped backward.

“How many children did my mother have?””

Jonathan answered softly.

“Four.””

Victoria covered her face.

Four children.

Four lives.

Four stories.

And only one had ever been allowed to remain hers.

A vehicle engine roared outside.

Everyone turned.

A black sedan emerged from the rain.

The headlights stopped at the carriage-house doors.

A man stepped out.

He was younger than Charles.

Older than Adrian.

And he had Victoria's eyes.

He entered carrying a gun.

“Mom.””

Victoria's heart shattered.

She knew that voice.

Not from memory.

From instinct.

The man stared at her.

“I finally found you.””

Adrian stood frozen.

Emma whispered his name.

“Jonah.””

The man looked at her.

Then at Adrian.

Then Ethan.

“I've been searching for all of you.””

He lowered the gun.

“But Charles didn't want you together.””

Victoria could barely breathe.

“Who raised you?””

Jonah smiled bitterly.

“The woman who was supposed to be my mother.””

“Who?””

May you like

He looked toward Evelyn.

“Her.””
