Chapter 7: The Man Behind Charles's Face

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The man standing at the bottom of the hidden staircase had Charles Ashford's face.

Not similar.

Not close.

The same narrow jaw.

The same steel-gray eyes.

The same deep line beside the mouth.

The same expression Victoria had seen across dining tables, in boardrooms, beside hospital beds, and in their bedroom on the night she had begged him to save their daughter.

But Charles had been dead for six years.

Victoria knew because she had watched his coffin disappear beneath the ground.

“You're not him,” she whispered.

The man's mouth curved into a faint smile.

“No.””

His voice was different.

Lower.

Rougher.

But the resemblance was still enough to make Victoria's stomach twist.

Dr. Keller raised his gun.

“Alexander.””

The man looked at him.

“Doctor.””

Victoria's hand went numb.

Alexander.

The name everyone had just assumed belonged to a dead twin.

Charles's twin.

A man supposedly dead before the children were even born.

A ghost who had somehow walked into the basement.

“You're Alexander Ashford,” she said.

“Yes.””

“You died.””

“No.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I saw the death certificate.””

“You saw what Charles wanted you to see.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You look exactly like my father.””

Alexander's eyes settled on him.

“That was the point.””

Evelyn moved between them.

“Alexander, it's over.””

He looked at her.

“You've been saying that for twenty-five years.””

Jonathan raised his gun.

“Stay away from my family.””

Alexander laughed.

“Your family?””

His gaze shifted to Emma.

“You're still telling yourself that?””

Jonathan's expression hardened.

“She is my granddaughter.””

“She is Victoria's daughter.””

“She is both.””

Alexander's smile vanished.

“Biologically.””

The single word changed the room.

Emma stared at him.

“Then who are you?””

Alexander looked at her.

“The man who made Charles afraid.””

Victoria's breath caught.

“You're the father.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I am the reason Charles believed you were lying about the children.””

Victoria frowned.

“I don't understand.””

Alexander took another step into the light.

“Because twenty-six years ago, Charles thought I slept with you.””

Victoria stared.

“I barely knew you.””

“You knew me well enough to know I was his brother.””

“I never betrayed him.””

“I know.””

“Then why was there a paternity test?””

Alexander glanced toward Dr. Keller.

“Because Charles forced one.””

Keller nodded.

“Charles believed the pregnancy was connected to Alexander somehow. He didn't trust Victoria. He didn't trust anyone.””

“But the test said the twins weren't his,” Victoria said.

Alexander's expression changed.

“That wasn't the real result.””

Keller looked down.

“The first report was altered.””

“By whom?”” Adrian asked.

“Charles.””

Keller's voice was barely audible.

“He changed the names and the blood types.””

Emma stared at the doctor.

“Why?””

“Because the real result terrified him.””

Alexander answered.

“The twins weren't genetically related to me.””

He looked at Victoria.

“They were related to someone else.””

Victoria's stomach tightened.

“To Daniel?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Alexander's eyes moved toward Clara.

Clara looked away.

Victoria followed his gaze.

“Clara.””

Clara's lips trembled.

“Don't.””

“You know.””

“I know too much.””

Emma stepped toward her mother.

“Tell me.””

Clara closed her eyes.

“When Victoria gave birth, there was another woman in the hospital.””

“Who?””

Clara swallowed.

“Her name was Nora Vale.””

Emma froze.

“Vale?””

“My sister.””

Adrian's eyes widened.

“Daniel's sister.””

“Yes.””

Clara continued.

“Nora had been working as a nurse for Charles. She had access to the nursery. She also knew about the paternity dispute.””

Victoria stared.

“What does your sister have to do with my children?””

Clara looked at her.

“She was paid to switch the blood samples.””

Victoria's breath stopped.

“By Charles?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Clara's voice broke.

“By Alexander.””

The room erupted.

“You said Charles was afraid of Alexander,” Victoria said.

“I said Alexander made him afraid.””

Alexander didn't deny it.

“I needed Charles to believe the children were not his.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew what he planned.””

“What?””

“To sell them.””

Emma recoiled.

Alexander's expression remained hard.

“Charles had found buyers before they were born. Wealthy families who wanted an Ashford child because of the inheritance.””

Jonathan's jaw tightened.

“You were involved.””

“I stopped him.””

“You helped him.””

“No.””

Alexander looked directly at Jonathan.

“I destroyed his arrangement.””

Jonathan's face went cold.

“You destroyed my family.””

“You stole a child.””

“I saved him.””

“You stole him.””

Adrian's head snapped toward them.

“Stop.””

Both men went silent.

Adrian looked at Alexander.

“Did you know me?””

Alexander nodded.

“I saw you once.””

“When?””

“The night you disappeared.””

Adrian's voice cracked.

“You let it happen?””

“I tried to stop it.””

“But you failed.””

“Yes.””

The answer was so simple it hurt.

Adrian looked away.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Why did Charles make me sign that contract?””

Alexander's face darkened.

“Because the children were no longer safe.””

“So he used my signature.””

“He used your unconscious body.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“And the fire?””

Alexander looked at Dr. Keller.

Keller whispered, “Charles ordered it.””

Emma gasped.

“He burned the cottage.””

“He believed both children were there.””

Victoria felt sick.

“He was trying to kill them.””

“No.””

Alexander shook his head.

“He was trying to kill one of them.””

“Which one?””

“Amelia.””

Emma stopped breathing.

“Why?””

“Because the trust was only part of it.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Charles had discovered the truth about your blood.””

Emma whispered, “What truth?””

“You weren't his daughter.””

Victoria stared at Alexander.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“Not because of Daniel. Not because of me.””

“Then who?””

Alexander's eyes lowered.

“Your biological father was Jonathan Whitmore.””

Everyone froze.

Jonathan stepped backward.

“No.””

“Charles discovered it.””

“That's impossible.””

Alexander looked at Victoria.

“Your pregnancy was complicated. Blood testing became necessary. Jonathan's DNA was found in the hospital records.””

Victoria shook her head violently.

“I never slept with him.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Alexander's eyes shifted toward Clara.

Clara began to cry.

“Because I was pregnant before you.””

Emma turned.

“Mom?””

Clara looked at her.

“Nora and I were carrying secrets of our own.””

She took a trembling breath.

“Jonathan had been involved with Nora.””

Jonathan looked stunned.

“I didn't know.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

Clara pulled a folded letter from her coat.

“Nora gave birth to a daughter.””

Emma's heart seemed to stop.

“What happened to her?””

Clara looked at Jonathan.

“Charles took her.””

Jonathan went white.

“No.””

“He told you she died.””

Jonathan shook his head.

“I was told the baby was stillborn.””

“That was the lie.””

Emma stared between them.

Then she understood.

“Nora's daughter…”

Clara couldn't finish.

Alexander did.

“Is Emma.””

Jonathan's knees nearly buckled.

Emma stood frozen.

Victoria couldn't speak.

All the lies had led back to the same child.

The child she had spent twenty-five years searching for.

The child Clara had hidden.

The child Charles had tried to erase.

The child Jonathan had unknowingly been searching for all his life.

But Adrian was still standing there.

Still unanswered.

Victoria turned toward Alexander.

“And my son?””

Alexander's expression changed.

“That is where the story gets worse.””

“What happened to him?””

Alexander looked at Adrian.

“He was never taken by the Whitmores.””

Adrian frowned.

“You said I was.””

“I lied.””

“Why?””

“Because the real truth would have gotten you killed.””

Adrian stepped forward.

Alexander reached into his coat and removed a small photograph.

He placed it in Adrian's hand.

It showed a little boy standing beside a woman in a hospital corridor.

The woman was young.

Beautiful.

Alive.

Adrian stared at her face.

His voice disappeared.

Victoria looked over his shoulder.

The photograph slipped from his fingers.

The woman standing beside the little boy was her.

But she was wearing a hospital gown.

And she was holding the child.

A child Victoria had never remembered meeting.

On the back of the photograph were three words.

*Your first son.*

Adrian looked at Victoria.

“Mom?””

Victoria couldn't answer.

Because she remembered.

Not the whole memory.

Just one sound.

A newborn crying.

A nurse saying, “Mrs. Ashford, you have another baby.””

And Charles whispering:

“Don't look.””

Then the memory vanished.

May you like

A gunshot exploded.

Dr. Keller fell.
