Chapter 4: The Mother Who Came Back From the Dead

No one spoke.

Clara Vale stood at the bottom of the staircase as though she had simply stepped out for a moment and returned to finish a conversation interrupted twenty-five years ago.

Emma's knees nearly buckled.

“Mom?””

The word came out broken.

Clara's expression changed.

For a heartbeat, she looked like a woman seeing her child for the first time.

Then the softness vanished.

“Don't call me that.””

Emma stared at her.

“But you're Clara.””

“Yes.””

“You died.””

“I was supposed to.””

Victoria descended the first step.

“That's impossible.””

Clara looked at her.

“So was your daughter surviving the fire.””

Victoria stopped.

Every nerve in her body screamed.

“You knew.””

Clara's eyes settled on Emma.

“I knew exactly what happened.””

Emma stepped toward her.

“You're my mother.””

Clara didn't deny it.

“Then why did you let me believe you were dead?””

“Because Charles wanted you dead.””

Emma flinched.

Adrian moved closer.

“What did my father do?””

Clara's expression hardened.

“He took your children.””

Victoria's throat tightened.

“Our children.””

“Yes.””

Clara looked directly at her.

“You gave birth to twins.””

Victoria's eyes filled.

“Tell me their names.””

Clara hesitated.

“Amelia and Ethan.””

Adrian whispered, “Then why did Evelyn say I wasn't Ethan?””

Clara's gaze shifted to him.

“Because she lied.””

Evelyn's face went pale.

“You know nothing.””

Clara laughed.

“I know more than you ever wanted me to.””

Samuel stepped forward.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

Clara turned on him.

“You especially.””

Samuel stopped.

“You signed the papers.””

His face fell.

“What papers?””

Adrian asked.

Clara didn't answer him.

She stared at Samuel.

“The papers declaring my daughter dead.””

Samuel's voice broke.

“I was ordered.””

“So was I.””

Victoria looked at Clara.

“By whom?””

Clara's eyes became hollow.

“Charles.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid of what Amelia would inherit.””

“What would she inherit?””

“Control.””

Victoria frowned.

Clara took a slow breath.

“When the twins were born, your father had already rewritten the family trust. He intended to leave everything to his firstborn son.””

Adrian frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“But why hide Amelia?””

“Because the trust contained a condition.””

Clara looked at Emma.

“Only a legitimate male heir could control the Ashford empire after Charles's death.””

Emma's jaw tightened.

“So he erased me.””

“No.””

Clara shook her head.

“He erased both of you.””

Everyone froze.

Adrian stared.

“What?””

Clara stepped closer.

“Charles discovered that your grandfather's lawyers had found evidence of financial crimes. If the twins were publicly acknowledged, the estate would be frozen during the investigation.””

Victoria whispered, “So he hid us.””

“He did worse.””

Clara reached into her handbag and removed a small cassette tape.

“This is the recording.””

Samuel's face turned white.

“You still have it?””

“I kept it all these years.””

Adrian looked at the tape.

“A recording of what?””

“Your father ordering the switch.””

Victoria felt sick.

“The switch?””

Clara nodded.

“The night of the fire, Charles arranged for one newborn boy to be brought into the Ashford nursery.””

Adrian's face tightened.

“Me.””

“No.””

Clara looked at him carefully.

“Not you.””

Again, the answer came.

Adrian's voice rose.

“Then stop saying that! Who was I?””

Clara's eyes softened.

“You were the child Charles had chosen.””

“Chosen for what?””

“To replace the heir he believed had died.””

The room spun.

Victoria grabbed the banister.

“I don't understand.””

Clara looked at her.

“Because the child in your nursery wasn't either of the twins.””

Silence.

Emma covered her mouth.

Adrian stared at Clara.

“Then where were we?””

“Together.””

“Where?””

“The old servants' cottage.””

Victoria's eyes widened.

“Daniel.””

Clara nodded.

“He took the twins.””

“He saved them?””

“He tried.””

Victoria looked down.

“Then how did we lose them?””

Clara's face broke for the first time.

“Because Charles found us.””

She continued quietly.

“He arrived before dawn. The cottage was burning.””

Emma stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Clara's voice trembled.

“I gave Amelia to Daniel.””

She looked toward Emma.

“And I gave Ethan to another woman.””

Adrian's heart pounded.

“Who?””

Clara stared directly at him.

“Evelyn.””

Evelyn recoiled.

“You said you didn't know where he went.””

“I lied.””

“You gave him to me.””

“I had no choice.””

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“You raised me?””

“No.””

Evelyn's voice was barely audible.

“I was ordered to deliver you.””

“To whom?””

She couldn't answer.

Clara did.

“To the family that paid Charles.””

Adrian's face hardened.

“What family?””

Clara looked at Victoria.

“They weren't the Ashfords.””

Victoria's stomach dropped.

“Who?””

Clara whispered the name.

“The Whitmores.””

Adrian froze.

The Whitmores were one of the most powerful families in the state.

And their patriarch, Jonathan Whitmore, had been Charles Ashford's closest business rival.

Emma shook her head.

“Why would they want a baby?””

Clara looked at Adrian.

“Because their son had died.””

Victoria understood first.

“They needed an heir.””

Clara nodded.

“They took Ethan.””

Adrian stared into nothing.

“I was raised as their son.””

“No.””

Clara shook her head.

“You were raised as Jonathan Whitmore's grandson.””

A terrible silence followed.

Adrian pressed a hand against his forehead.

“My parents…”

“Were never your parents.””

“My birth certificate?””

“Forged.””

“My childhood records?””

“Forged.””

“My entire name?””

“Constructed.””

Emma looked horrified.

“Then who is Adrian Ashford?””

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“You are Ethan.””

Adrian's breath stopped.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“No.””

Clara turned.

“You knew.””

“I knew Charles had lost control of the boy.””

“You knew he was alive.””

“I didn't know where.””

Clara's expression hardened.

“You did.””

Evelyn's silence was enough.

Victoria stepped toward her.

“You found him.””

“Yes.””

“Years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Chicago.””

Adrian looked at her.

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

His face went blank.

“You knew who I was six months ago?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Evelyn looked toward Emma.

“From the person who was coming for you.””

The front doors of the mansion suddenly opened.

A man's voice echoed through the entrance hall.

“Evelyn.””

Everyone turned.

A tall man entered.

Silver-haired.

Expensive black coat.

His eyes fixed immediately on Adrian.

Clara's face drained of color.

Victoria whispered, “Jonathan Whitmore.””

The man smiled.

Then he looked at Emma.

“Amelia.””

Emma stepped backward.

Jonathan took another step.

“My granddaughter.””

Adrian's blood ran cold.

“You called her your granddaughter.””

Jonathan's smile disappeared.

“Yes.””

“Then you know who I am.””

Jonathan looked at him.

“I've known from the beginning.””

Victoria felt the world falling apart.

“How?””

Jonathan's answer was quiet.

“Because I was there the night you were born.””

He reached inside his coat.

Evelyn screamed.

“Don't!””

Jonathan pulled out a folded document.

Not a gun.

A contract.

He dropped it onto the table beside the nursery door.

“The agreement your husband signed.””

Victoria approached it.

The first page carried Charles Ashford's signature.

The second carried Daniel Vale's.

The third carried Evelyn Cross's.

And the fourth—

Victoria's blood turned cold.

It carried her own signature.

“No,” she whispered.

She had never seen that document.

She had never signed it.

Yet there it was.

Her name.

Her handwriting.

Her signature.

Jonathan watched her carefully.

“You don't remember signing it, do you?””

Victoria looked up.

“No.””

He smiled.

“That is because you were unconscious.””

Everyone froze.

Jonathan's voice became colder.

May you like

“You weren't the victim of the fire, Victoria.””

“You were the reason it happened.””
