Chapter 6: The Name Hidden Under the Floorboards
Glass exploded across the nursery.
Emma screamed.
Adrian grabbed her and pulled her behind the heavy wooden crib as another shot struck the wall.
“Down!””
Victoria dropped behind the desk.
Clara crawled toward Samuel.
Jonathan remained standing for one terrible second before Evelyn slammed him to the floor.
“Are you insane?”” she shouted.
“I wanted them to hear me.””
Another shot cracked through the room.
Everyone ducked.
Adrian looked toward the shattered window.
“Who is shooting?””
Evelyn's face had gone white.
“Someone who knows we're here.””
Samuel gripped the edge of the desk.
“We need to get out.””
“There is only one staircase,” Jonathan said.
“Then we use it.””
A bullet tore through the doorframe.
No one moved.
Then the shooting stopped.
The silence that followed was worse.
Adrian looked at Emma.
“Are you hurt?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
He touched her cheek briefly.
“I thought—”
“I know.””
For one second, they forgot everything else.
Then Victoria crawled toward the metal box.
“We need the documents.””
Adrian stared at her.
“Forget the documents.””
“No.””
“Mom—”
“I have spent twenty-five years believing my daughter died.””
She pulled the box close.
“I am not losing the truth again.””
Jonathan looked toward the hallway.
“The shooter won't wait.””
Evelyn pointed toward the floor.
“There is another way out.””
Victoria stared at her.
“Where?””
Evelyn moved the crib.
Underneath it was a wooden panel.
She pried it open with her fingers.
A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness.
Emma stared.
“You knew about this?””
“I lived in this house once.””
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
“Because Charles used it.””
Adrian climbed down first.
“Stay behind me.””
They descended into a damp underground passage.
The walls were brick.
Old pipes ran overhead.
Water dripped somewhere in the darkness.
Victoria followed with the metal box pressed against her chest.
Clara came behind her.
Samuel kept looking over his shoulder.
“What are we looking for?””
“The truth,” Victoria said.
“No.””
Evelyn's voice was quiet.
“We're looking for what Charles was afraid someone would find.””
The passage opened into a stone room beneath the mansion.
A desk stood against one wall.
A rusted filing cabinet occupied the corner.
And on the floor were dozens of old cardboard boxes.
Adrian stared.
“This was an archive.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Charles kept records here.””
Emma moved toward the desk.
A name was carved into the wood.
AMELIA.
She touched the letters.
“Why is my name here?””
Clara looked away.
“Because you were supposed to inherit this room.””
Victoria opened the metal box again.
Inside was a key.
Different from the brass nursery key.
Smaller.
Blackened.
Samuel recognized it.
“That opens the cabinet.””
They approached the filing cabinet.
The third drawer was locked.
Victoria inserted the key.
Click.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Birth records.
Bank transfers.
Medical reports.
And photographs.
Emma picked up a folder.
Her hands began shaking.
“Amelia Ashford.””
She opened it.
The first page was a birth certificate.
Real.
Not forged.
Mother: Victoria Ashford.
Father: Charles Ashford.
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
“I was his daughter.””
Victoria touched her shoulder.
“Yes.””
Emma looked down.
A second page slipped out.
It was a medical report.
“Twin one: female, healthy.””
Emma continued reading.
“Twin two: male, severe respiratory distress.””
Adrian's voice was quiet.
“Me.””
But the next line made everyone stop.
“Male infant deceased at 3:12 a.m.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
Adrian took the page.
“That says I died.””
Clara whispered, “The hospital believed you did.””
“But I didn't.””
“No.””
“Then who died?””
No one answered.
Emma found another folder.
Inside was a photograph of a tiny baby wrapped in a red blanket.
The same bracelet.
The same star-shaped charm.
She looked closer.
On the blanket was a handwritten number.
“Two.””
Victoria took the photograph.
“That means Amelia was twin two.””
Adrian found another image.
A baby boy.
Number one.
He stared.
“Then I'm twin one.””
A horrible realization passed between them.
The hospital records had been reversed.
The twins hadn't simply been separated.
Their identities had been deliberately switched before the death certificate was issued.
Samuel whispered, “Charles altered the entire medical record.””
“No,” Jonathan said.
“He didn't.””
Everyone turned.
Jonathan looked toward the door.
“Someone else did.””
Victoria's stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Jonathan pointed to the final folder.
It contained a single handwritten page.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
At the bottom was one sentence.
I DID NOT SWITCH THE TWINS. I SWITCHED THE NAMES.
Emma's face went pale.
“Why?””
A voice answered from behind them.
“Because one of them had to disappear.””
They turned.
A man stood in the passage.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Holding a gun.
Victoria recognized him immediately.
Dr. Martin Keller.
The physician who had delivered her twins.
The man who had signed the original death certificate.
“You.””
Dr. Keller smiled.
“I wondered how long it would take.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You told everyone I died.””
“I told them the boy named Ethan died.””
“But I wasn't Ethan.””
“No.””
Dr. Keller raised the gun slightly.
“Not originally.””
Emma whispered, “What did Charles pay you?””
“Nothing.””
“Then why?””
Dr. Keller's face changed.
“Because Charles threatened to kill my family.””
Victoria stared.
“Who was he trying to protect?””
“My daughter.””
“That still doesn't explain the switch.””
“It does.””
Dr. Keller took a slow breath.
“Charles believed Daniel was Amelia's father.””
“He wasn't,” Victoria said.
“I know.””
“Then why did Charles?””
“Because he received a paternity test.””
Victoria's heart stopped.
“Impossible.””
Dr. Keller nodded.
“A blood sample taken during your pregnancy.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What did it show?””
Dr. Keller's eyes moved to Emma.
“It showed Charles wasn't her father.””
Silence.
Victoria whispered, “But Daniel wasn't either.””
Dr. Keller said nothing.
Emma's voice shook.
“Then who was?””
The doctor looked at Adrian.
“That's why Charles ordered the second test.””
Adrian frowned.
“Second test?””
Dr. Keller nodded.
“The result was never entered into the records.””
“Why?””
“Because it proved something Charles could not survive.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“What did it prove?””
Dr. Keller looked at her.
“Both twins had the same biological father.””
Emma and Adrian looked at each other.
“Who?””
Dr. Keller's answer came softly.
“Jonathan Whitmore.””
Jonathan staggered.
“No.””
Victoria stared at him.
Jonathan shook his head.
“I never touched you.””
Dr. Keller nodded.
“I know.””
The doctor pulled one final envelope from his coat.
“You didn't.””
He looked at Victoria.
“But someone who looked exactly like you did.””
Jonathan's face went blank.
Evelyn whispered, “Charles had a twin.””
Dr. Keller nodded.
“Alexander Ashford.””
Victoria felt the floor disappear beneath her.
“He died twenty-six years ago.””
“No.””
Dr. Keller's eyes hardened.
“He didn't.””
A crash sounded above them.
Then footsteps thundered down the hidden staircase.
The doctor raised his gun.
“Everyone stay back.””
A man's voice echoed through the passage.
“Martin.””
Dr. Keller closed his eyes.
He knew that voice.
Victoria knew it too.
The voice of a dead man.
May you like
Charles Ashford.
And then someone stepped into the light who had Charles's face.
