Chapter 5: The Signature in the Dark
Victoria stared at the document until the letters blurred.
Her signature.
Her name.
Her handwriting.
And yet she knew with absolute certainty that she had never signed the paper.
“You forged this,” she whispered.
Jonathan Whitmore didn't blink.
“No.””
“Then Charles did.””
“No.””
Victoria looked up.
“Who?””
Jonathan's silence was answer enough.
She turned toward Clara.
Clara's face had gone gray.
“You knew.””
“I knew something was wrong,” Clara said.
“That isn't enough.””
“I didn't know how far Charles had gone.””
Victoria held the contract in both hands.
“Why does it say I agreed to surrender my children?””
“Because you did.””
The words came from Jonathan.
Victoria's head snapped toward him.
“I would never do that.””
“You didn't.””
Jonathan stepped closer.
“You were drugged.””
Adrian moved between them.
“Who drugged my mother?””
Jonathan looked past him.
“Charles.””
Victoria's breath caught.
The memories came back in fragments.
A glass of champagne before dinner.
A headache.
The nursery.
Charles arguing with someone.
A pressure behind her eyes.
Then darkness.
She had always believed she passed out from exhaustion after giving birth.
Now she wondered whether she had ever been conscious enough to know what happened.
Jonathan picked up the contract.
“Charles needed your signature.””
“For what?””
“To transfer legal guardianship.””
“Of the twins?””
“Yes.””
Victoria's voice trembled.
“Why would he need that?””
“Because he planned to make one child disappear permanently.””
Emma stepped closer.
“Which one?””
Jonathan looked at her.
“You.””
Emma flinched.
“Why me?””
“Because you were the female heir.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It does if you've read the trust.””
Jonathan opened another folder.
Inside was an older document.
Victoria recognized the seal.
Her father-in-law's private trust.
Jonathan placed it on the table.
“The Ashford fortune was divided among Charles's children. But the controlling shares were protected by a special clause.””
Adrian leaned over the paper.
“What clause?””
Jonathan pointed.
“Here.””
Adrian read.
His eyes widened.
“Any child born outside the approved bloodline loses control of the trust.””
Emma frowned.
“I was born to Victoria.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“That wasn't the issue.””
“Then what was?””
“The Ashford family believed one of the twins was not Charles's biological child.””
Everyone froze.
Victoria's heart stopped.
“What?””
Jonathan looked directly at her.
“Charles suspected you had been with another man.””
Victoria recoiled.
“No.””
“He was obsessed with the possibility.””
“That is a lie.””
Jonathan's expression remained cold.
“He hired someone to investigate your pregnancy.””
Victoria felt humiliation mix with rage.
“I was faithful to him.””
“I believe you.””
Jonathan looked toward Adrian.
“But Charles didn't.””
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“So he destroyed his own children because he thought one wasn't his?””
“Not destroyed.””
Jonathan's voice softened.
“Replaced.””
Victoria stared.
“Who was he trying to replace?””
Jonathan looked at Emma.
“Amelia.””
Emma's fingers curled.
“Why me?””
“Because Charles believed you had a different father.””
“Did I?””
Jonathan said nothing.
That silence cut deeper than any accusation.
Victoria stepped toward Clara.
“You know.””
Clara looked down.
“Tell me.””
Clara squeezed her eyes shut.
“Daniel wasn't your lover.””
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
“I know.””
“But Charles believed he was.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel was the one who helped you after the first miscarriage.””
Victoria suddenly remembered.
Daniel had driven her to the hospital.
He had stayed outside the room.
He had carried groceries to the house afterward.
Nothing more.
Nothing improper.
But Charles had been jealous.
Possessive.
Suspicious.
And cruel.
“He thought Amelia was Daniel's child.””
“Yes.””
“And Ethan?””
“Charles believed Ethan was his.””
Victoria whispered, “So he kept the boy.””
Jonathan nodded.
“He wanted Ethan raised as the Ashford heir.””
“And Amelia?””
“He ordered her removed.””
Emma looked at Clara.
“How did you stop him?””
Clara's voice became quieter.
“I didn't.””
Emma stared.
“What?””
“I failed you.””
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to take you away before Charles could erase you. Daniel helped me. We arranged for you to disappear.””
“But you died.””
“I let people believe I died.””
Emma took another step.
“You left me.””
“I saved your life.””
“You left me.””
Clara broke down.
“I thought if you hated me, you'd stay away from the Ashfords.””
Emma's expression hardened.
“And it worked.””
A terrible silence settled over the room.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Where was I?””
Jonathan turned toward him.
“You were here.””
“In this house?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
“Three weeks.””
Adrian stared.
“No.””
Jonathan reached into the folder and removed another photograph.
A baby boy lying in a white crib.
A silver bracelet around his wrist.
On the wall behind him was a clock.
The Ashford nursery.
Adrian's face went blank.
“That's not possible.””
“It is.””
“Why don't I remember?””
“You were an infant.””
“I mean later.””
Jonathan lowered his eyes.
“Because your memories were rewritten.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
“You were moved to another family when you were four.””
“Why?””
“To make the identity permanent.””
Victoria felt sick.
“Charles gave away his own son?””
Jonathan nodded.
“He gave him to the Whitmores.””
Adrian's eyes sharpened.
“Your family.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Charles owed us money.””
Victoria whispered, “A child for debt.””
Jonathan looked at her.
“Charles called it an investment.””
Emma stepped closer.
“And then what?””
Jonathan hesitated.
“Then everything went wrong.””
“What went wrong?””
“Ethan disappeared.””
Adrian's face hardened.
“You just said I was raised by the Whitmores.””
“You were.””
“Then I didn't disappear.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“You did before that.””
He opened another file.
Inside were police reports.
Photographs.
A missing-child poster.
Adrian took one look and staggered backward.
The photograph showed a little boy with dark hair and serious eyes.
His own face.
Underneath it was another name.
Ethan Ashford.
Missing.
Age four.
Adrian whispered, “That's me.””
“No,” Jonathan said.
Adrian looked at him.
Jonathan's voice dropped.
“That was the boy who disappeared before you became Adrian.””
Victoria stared.
The room seemed to tilt.
“So who became Adrian?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
Evelyn did.
“Me.””
Everyone turned.
Evelyn walked slowly toward them.
“I chose the replacement.””
Victoria's blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
“You were never the Whitmores' lost son.””
She reached into her handbag.
“And you were never Charles's chosen heir.””
She placed a small photograph on the table.
A teenage boy stood beside Jonathan.
He looked almost identical to Adrian.
But not quite.
Victoria stared.
“Who is that?””
Jonathan's face tightened.
“My son.””
Adrian looked from the photograph to Jonathan.
“Then who am I?””
Evelyn whispered the answer.
“Ashford blood runs through you.””
She paused.
“But you're not Victoria's son.””
Victoria froze.
Emma's eyes widened.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at Victoria.
“Your real child died before he was born.””
Victoria's hand flew to her mouth.
“You're lying.””
“I wish I were.””
Adrian took a step back.
“So I'm not Ethan.””
“No.””
“I'm not Charles's son.””
“No.””
“Then whose child am I?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel Vale.””
Emma went completely still.
“That's impossible.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Daniel had a child before he met Clara.””
Victoria stared.
“A child?””
“A son.””
Adrian's voice became hollow.
“Me.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Daniel never knew.””
May you like
The room fell silent.
Then a gunshot shattered the window.
