Chapter 4: The Wife I Never Knew Existed

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The front door was still open.

The morning air drifted inside.

A bird was singing somewhere outside, completely unaware that my entire world had just changed again.

Ex-wife.

The word kept repeating in my head.

Not girlfriend.

Not someone from his past.

Not an old relationship.

Wife.

Marcus Johnson had an ex-wife.

And I had been married to him for twelve years without knowing.

I stared at him.

Waiting for him to laugh.

Waiting for him to tell me this was some terrible misunderstanding.

But Marcus didn't laugh.

He didn't deny it.

He just stood there looking like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.

"Explain.""

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Marcus looked down.

"Claire...""

"No.""

I stepped away from the door.

"Don't start with my name.""

He closed his eyes.

I could tell he was trying to figure out what to say.

That bothered me more than anything.

Because even now, even after everything, he was still choosing his words carefully.

Still controlling the story.

Still deciding what pieces of my life I was allowed to know.

"How long were you married?""

He swallowed.

"Three years.""

I stared at him.

"Before me?""

"Yes.""

"And you never thought to mention it?""

"It was complicated.""

I laughed.

"Complicated?""

I walked into the kitchen.

"Marcus, we talked about everything.""

"No, we didn't.""

His words stopped me.

I turned slowly.

"What did you say?""

He looked ashamed.

"We talked about what I wanted you to know.""

That sentence hurt more than any confession.

Because it was true.

I had mistaken silence for trust.

I had believed privacy meant respect.

I never considered that privacy could be a hiding place.

"Who was she?""

Marcus sat down at the kitchen table.

The same table where we had eaten breakfast every morning.

The same table where Caleb had learned multiplication.

The same table where Maya had spilled chocolate milk and laughed until she cried.

Now Marcus sat there like a stranger.

"Her name was Vanessa.""

I waited.

"Tell me about her.""

He rubbed his hands together.

"I met Vanessa when I was twenty-six.""

"And?""

"And I was stupid.""

I almost smiled.

"That doesn't explain anything.""

He looked at me.

"Vanessa and I rushed into marriage. It was toxic.""

"Toxic how?""

He hesitated.

"She was controlling.""

I crossed my arms.

"That's convenient.""

His face tightened.

"I know how it sounds.""

"No, you don't.""

I shook my head.

"Because from where I'm standing, you're telling me that every woman in your life is the problem.""

Silence.

That hit him.

Good.

Because I needed him to understand.

For twelve years, I had defended him.

Now he needed to defend himself.

"Where is Vanessa?""

Marcus looked toward the window.

"I don't know.""

"What do you mean you don't know?""

"She disappeared.""

I stared.

"People don't just disappear.""

"She did.""

"When?""

"Two days ago.""

My stomach tightened.

Two days.

The same week Natalie appeared.

The same week everything exploded.

"Why would Natalie know about her?""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"Because Vanessa contacted her.""

That made no sense.

"Why?""

He didn't answer immediately.

I waited.

Finally, he whispered:

"Because Natalie wasn't the only person Vanessa was watching.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Watching?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Vanessa knew about my life.""

"Your life?""

"Our life.""

The room felt smaller.

"What are you saying?""

He looked terrified.

"I'm saying Vanessa knew about you.""

I felt my heartbeat increase.

"How?""

"I don't know.""

"Marcus.""

He stood.

"I swear, Claire, I never told her about you.""

"Then how did she know?""

He had no answer.

Again.

Always no answer.

I turned away.

My hands were shaking.

This wasn't just betrayal anymore.

It was something darker.

Something I didn't understand.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

"Hello?""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

"Claire Johnson?""

My body went cold.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"You need to stop trusting your husband.""

My eyes moved to Marcus.

He saw my expression.

"Who is it?""

I turned away.

"How do you know my name?""

The woman on the phone breathed softly.

"Because I've been trying to warn you.""

"Warn me about what?""

The line crackled.

Then she said:

"About the man you married.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Marcus looked at me.

"Who was that?""

I didn't answer.

May you like

Because for the first time in twelve years...

I wondered if Marcus was the only person lying to me.
