Chapter 11: The Confession Hidden in the Past

Nobody spoke after David's words.

Not Marcus.

Not me.

Not Natalie.

The entire world seemed frozen around us.

Because somehow, after everything I had learned, there was still another layer.

Another secret.

Another person responsible.

"Who?""

My voice barely came out.

David looked at Marcus.

"Tell her.""

Marcus stared at the ground.

"I can't.""

I almost laughed.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was still protecting someone.

"Who are you protecting?""

His silence answered.

I stepped closer.

"Your father?""

Marcus looked up.

"No.""

That surprised me.

"Then who?""

His face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

All at once.

"My mother.""

I froze.

"Your mother?""

David nodded.

"She was there that night.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Don't.""

"She deserves to know.""

I looked between them.

"Know what?""

David took a deep breath.

"Daniel didn't die because of a fight.""

My heart pounded.

"Then why?""

"Because Marcus's father confronted him first.""

The pieces started moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

"What happened?""

David opened the folder.

"Daniel recorded conversations.""

He handed me a small device.

A flash drive.

"He knew he was in danger.""

I looked at Marcus.

"You knew about this?""

He nodded.

"I found it after.""

"And you hid it.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

His voice broke.

"Because I was afraid.""

I stared at him.

"Of your father?""

"No.""

A pause.

"Of what would happen if the truth came out.""

David looked angry.

"My brother spent his final days trying to expose corruption, and Marcus protected the people responsible.""

Marcus flinched.

"I was trying to protect my mother.""

David laughed bitterly.

"That's always your excuse.""

"Because it's true.""

"No.""

David stepped closer.

"You were protecting yourself.""

The words hit Marcus.

And I realized something.

Maybe both things were true.

Maybe Marcus had been afraid.

Maybe he had also been selfish.

People were complicated.

But consequences weren't.

"Where is your mother now?"" I asked.

Marcus looked away.

"She died six years ago.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"So she took the truth with her.""

"No.""

David shook his head.

"She left it.""

Everyone looked at him.

"What?""

David pulled out another envelope.

"This was found after her death.""

Marcus looked terrified.

"What is that?""

David opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

"I was hoping I would never have to use this.""

He handed it to Marcus.

Marcus read the first few lines.

Then his face changed.

He looked devastated.

"What does it say?""

He didn't answer.

I took the letter.

The handwriting was shaky.

The words were simple.

But they destroyed everything.

Marcus,

I know you believe you protected me.

You didn't.

You protected the fear your father created.

Daniel deserved justice.

You deserved freedom.

But you chose silence.

I am sorry for what I allowed you to become.

My hands started shaking.

I looked at Marcus.

His mother knew.

She knew he had covered it up.

And she blamed herself.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Because I thought I could leave it behind.""

I stared.

"You thought you could build a life on top of a grave?""

The words hurt him.

Good.

Because they were true.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

The number was unknown.

Again.

But this time, I recognized the voice immediately.

Vanessa.

"Claire.""

She sounded terrified.

"What happened?""

"I found something.""

"What?""

A pause.

Then:

"Someone has been inside my apartment.""

My blood went cold.

"Are you safe?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at Marcus.

He was watching me.

"What did they take?""

Vanessa whispered:

"The photos.""

"What photos?""

"The ones proving Marcus wasn't alone that night.""

Everyone went silent.

David looked at Marcus.

"What does that mean?""

Marcus looked terrified.

May you like

And then he said something that changed everything.

"Because my father wasn't the only person there.""
