Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden Inside the Envelope
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
It was strange how quickly a happy afternoon could become something completely different.
A few minutes earlier, my backyard had been filled with laughter.
Now it felt like a courtroom.
Everyone was waiting for evidence.
Waiting for someone to explain how the man they knew could become someone they didn't recognize.
Marcus stared at Natalie.
"What are you doing?""
His voice wasn't angry.
It was desperate.
Natalie looked at him with disappointment.
"I gave you a chance to tell her.""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
"No?"" I repeated.
I looked between them.
"That's all you have to say?""
He stepped toward me.
"Claire, please.""
I moved away.
That hurt him.
I saw it.
And for one horrible second, a part of me almost felt sorry for him.
Then I remembered the truth.
He had made choices.
Not one mistake.
Not one bad decision.
Choices.
Over and over again.
Natalie slowly handed me the envelope.
"I didn't want to give this to you in front of everyone.""
I stared at it.
"Then why did you?""
Her eyes moved around the backyard.
"Because Marcus has spent nine months deciding when you deserved the truth.""
She looked back at me.
"I decided you deserved it now.""
My fingers shook as I took the envelope.
It was heavier than it looked.
Maybe because I knew whatever was inside would change my life.
I opened it.
Inside were printed photographs.
At first, I didn't understand what I was seeing.
Then I did.
Marcus.
At a restaurant.
With Natalie.
Holding her hand.
Another photo.
Marcus standing outside a hotel.
Another.
Marcus kissing her forehead.
The kind of gentle gesture he used to do with me.
The kind that had once made me feel loved.
My stomach turned.
But then I saw the final photo.
And everything stopped.
It wasn't Natalie.
It was another woman.
A blonde woman sitting beside Marcus at a coffee shop.
The date printed in the corner was eighteen months earlier.
Before Natalie.
Before the baby.
Before everything I thought I knew collapsed.
I looked up slowly.
"Who is she?""
Marcus didn't answer.
I already knew.
"Who is she?""
My voice cracked.
Natalie answered quietly.
"I don't know.""
That was somehow worse.
"You don't know?""
She shook her head.
"I found those photos after I started looking into him.""
Marcus ran a hand through his hair.
"Claire, listen to me.""
"No.""
I held up the pictures.
"YOU listen.""
My voice shook.
"You didn't just betray me.""
I looked at Natalie.
"You betrayed her.""
Then back at Marcus.
"And whoever that woman is.""
I looked around at our family.
"You made all of us look stupid.""
My father-in-law had passed away years earlier, but Evelyn sat silently beneath the umbrella, staring at her son.
Finally, she spoke.
"Marcus.""
Just his name.
But everyone heard the disappointment.
He looked at his mother.
"Mom...""
"No.""
Evelyn's voice was cold.
"I raised you better than this.""
Marcus looked away.
That was when I noticed something.
Evelyn wasn't surprised.
Not completely.
My heart started racing.
"Wait.""
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at my mother-in-law.
"You knew?""
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"Claire...""
"You knew?""
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
"Don't blame my mother.""
I turned toward him.
"Why would I blame her?""
My voice became quiet.
"Unless she knew.""
Nobody spoke.
And silence was an answer.
I looked at Evelyn.
"How long have you known?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Not everything.""
"What does that mean?""
She looked down at her hands.
"I knew Marcus was unhappy.""
I stared at her.
"Unhappy?""
The word almost made me laugh.
"That's what you call it?""
Marcus looked ashamed.
But I wasn't finished.
"You knew your son was unhappy, and you never said anything?""
Evelyn looked at me.
"I thought it was a phase.""
"A phase?""
My voice broke.
"My marriage was a phase?""
"No.""
She reached for me.
I stepped back.
That hurt her.
But I couldn't let anyone touch me.
Not yet.
Not after everyone had spent months protecting me from the truth.
Natalie quietly spoke.
"There is more.""
I looked at her.
Of course there was.
There was always more.
She reached into the gift bag again.
This time, she pulled out a small notebook.
Marcus's face changed immediately.
"No.""
That reaction told me everything.
"What is that?""
Natalie held it out.
"I found it in his office.""
Marcus moved toward her.
I stepped between them.
"Don't.""
He stopped.
I had never seen him look at me like that.
Like he was afraid of me.
"Claire, you don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
He couldn't.
Again.
Always silence.
I opened the notebook.
The first page had dates.
Names.
Numbers.
At first, I thought they were business notes.
Then I realized.
They were women's names.
My hands started trembling.
There were several.
Not one.
Not two.
Several.
I looked at Marcus.
"How many?""
His eyes filled with tears.
"Claire...""
"How many women?""
The man I married stood in front of me.
A stranger wearing my husband's face.
"I don't know.""
The answer destroyed something inside me.
Because I expected a number.
A lie.
An excuse.
Anything.
But "I don't know" meant there had been so many moments he couldn't even count them.
The crowd began to disperse.
Some relatives quietly left.
Others whispered.
I didn't care.
I was somewhere else.
Somewhere outside my own body.
Then Caleb appeared at the door.
My ten-year-old son.
He had heard enough.
"Mom?""
I turned.
His face was confused.
"Dad did something bad?""
My heart shattered.
Because suddenly this wasn't just about me.
It wasn't about a marriage.
It was about two children who still believed their father was a hero.
I dropped the pictures.
And I knew one thing.
Whatever happened next...
May you like
I had to protect them.
Even if it meant destroying the man I once loved.
