Chapter 14: The Choice That Destroyed Everything

Ethan's words stayed in the room.

He chose.

Two simple words.

But they carried ten years of pain.

I looked at Marcus.

Waiting.

Begging silently for him to prove Ethan wrong.

But Marcus didn't.

He just stood there.

Broken.

"Tell me.""

My voice was quiet.

Marcus looked at me.

"I tried to help Daniel.""

Ethan laughed.

"At first.""

Marcus ignored him.

"I told Daniel to leave.""

"Leave?""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because I knew what my father and Ethan were capable of.""

"And you didn't go to the police?""

Marcus looked away.

"No.""

"Why?""

His voice cracked.

"Because I was afraid.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The answer beneath every answer.

Fear.

"I spent my entire childhood afraid of my father.""

Marcus continued.

"He controlled everything.""

"He controlled money.""

"He controlled my mother.""

"He controlled me.""

Ethan smiled.

"Poor Marcus.""

Marcus looked at him.

"You don't get to mock me.""

"Why not?""

Ethan stepped closer.

"Because you're the one who kept the secret.""

The words landed.

Because they were true.

Marcus turned back to me.

"That night, Daniel had proof.""

"Proof against your father.""

"Yes.""

"And Ethan attacked him.""

Marcus nodded.

"Daniel fought back.""

"What happened?""

Marcus looked down.

"Ethan pushed him.""

David closed his eyes.

Finally hearing the truth.

"He fell.""

Nobody spoke.

"And you?""

Marcus whispered:

"I was there.""

My heart sank.

"What did you do?""

Marcus looked at me.

"I called for help.""

Ethan laughed.

"No.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Shut up.""

"You called after you moved the evidence.""

The room froze.

I stared at Marcus.

"What evidence?""

Marcus couldn't answer.

Ethan did.

"The files.""

My hands went cold.

"You cared more about protecting documents than saving him.""

Marcus's face collapsed.

"No.""

"Yes.""

Ethan's voice became sharper.

"You made your choice.""

Marcus looked like he wanted to disappear.

And suddenly I understood.

Maybe that was the real reason he never told me.

Not because he killed Daniel.

Because he didn't.

Because he had done something almost as terrible.

He had watched.

He had hesitated.

He had protected himself.

And that choice followed him forever.

"Why did you marry me?""

The question came out before I could stop it.

Everyone looked at me.

Even Marcus.

"What?""

"Why me?""

His face changed.

"Claire...""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"I need to know.""

He swallowed.

"Because I loved you.""

"Is that the whole truth?""

Silence.

I knew.

"Marcus.""

He looked away.

And that was enough.

"Tell me.""

His voice broke.

"Because you reminded me of the life I wanted.""

I stared.

"What does that mean?""

"You were honest.""

"Kind.""

"You believed people could change.""

His eyes filled with tears.

"And I wanted to become the person you thought I was.""

The answer hurt.

Because there was love in it.

But there was also selfishness.

He didn't marry me because he was whole.

He married me because he wanted to escape who he was.

"You used me as a second chance.""

"No.""

"Yes.""

I wiped my tears.

"You loved what I represented.""

Marcus shook his head.

"I loved you.""

"Maybe.""

I looked away.

"But you never trusted me with the truth.""

The room was quiet.

Then Ethan spoke.

"You know what the funniest part is?""

Nobody answered.

"You all think Marcus is the biggest liar.""

He smiled.

"He's not.""

Everyone looked at him.

Ethan reached into his jacket.

And pulled out a phone.

"I have proof.""

Marcus's face changed.

"What did you do?""

Ethan smiled.

"I saved everything.""

He tapped the screen.

A recording began playing.

A man's voice filled the room.

Marcus's father.

My blood ran cold.

The recording was old.

But the words were clear.

"Daniel cannot leave with those files.""

A second voice.

Ethan.

"Then what do we do?""

The older man's voice:

"Make sure he never talks.""

I felt sick.

The recording continued.

Then came Marcus's voice.

You can't do this.

His father replied:

"You have two choices, son.""

A pause.

"Protect your family.""

Another pause.

"Or lose everything.""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan looked at Marcus.

"See?""

His smile disappeared.

"You were always part of this.""

Marcus looked destroyed.

Then David stepped forward.

"No.""

Everyone turned.

David looked at Ethan.

"You recorded that.""

Ethan froze.

David continued.

"And you edited it.""

The room changed.

"What?""

David looked at Marcus.

"Your brother is right about one thing.""

He pointed at Ethan.

"He saved everything.""

A pause.

"But not because he wanted justice.""

David's eyes hardened.

"He saved it because he wanted control.""

Ethan's expression changed.

Just slightly.

Enough.

Vanessa whispered:

"He's been blackmailing Marcus.""

Marcus looked down.

And I understood.

The truth was finally coming out.

Not one villain.

Not one victim.

A family destroyed by generations of fear and silence.

Then Ethan smiled again.

Because he still believed he had won.

"You're all missing the point.""

He looked at me.

"The files are gone.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

May you like

Ethan looked satisfied.

"Because I already found them.""
