Chapter 10: The Brother Who Came for Justice
The man walking toward us looked nothing like someone seeking revenge.
That was the first thing I noticed.
I expected anger.
I expected rage.
I expected someone who carried ten years of pain on his shoulders.
Instead, Daniel Carter's brother looked exhausted.
Like a man who had spent too long fighting a battle nobody believed existed.
He stopped a few feet away from us.
His eyes moved to Marcus.
Then to me.
Then back to Marcus.
"So this is her.""
Marcus stiffened.
"Robert.""
The man's jaw tightened.
"Don't call me that like we're old friends.""
The silence between them was heavy.
I looked at Natalie.
She avoided my eyes.
"You knew he was coming?""
She nodded.
"I thought you deserved to hear everything from him.""
I looked at Marcus.
"And you?""
He said nothing.
Of course.
Another moment where silence told me more than words.
The man extended his hand.
"David Carter.""
I shook it slowly.
"Claire Johnson.""
"I know.""
That sentence made my stomach tighten.
"You know me?""
David looked at Marcus.
"I know everything about you.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"David, this isn't the place.""
David laughed quietly.
"That's your favorite sentence, isn't it?""
He looked around.
"This isn't the place.""
His eyes moved toward my house.
"This isn't the time.""
He looked back at Marcus.
"Nobody can know.""
The anger finally appeared.
"That's how you've lived your entire life.""
Marcus's face hardened.
"Be careful.""
David smiled sadly.
"There he is.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
David looked at me.
"That is the Marcus nobody sees.""
I wanted to deny it.
I wanted to say he was wrong.
But I couldn't.
Because I had seen that side too.
The coldness.
The control.
The ability to make everyone else feel guilty.
"Why are you here?"" I asked.
David looked at me.
"Because I found what my brother died for.""
The air changed.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
"No.""
That one word carried fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
David noticed.
"So you do remember.""
"Give me the folder.""
I looked at the folder in David's hand.
My heart started racing.
"What's inside?""
David didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Marcus.
"Tell her.""
Marcus looked away.
"Tell me what?""
David opened the folder.
Inside were copies of documents.
Old documents.
Contracts.
Bank records.
Photographs.
And one picture.
A picture of Marcus.
Daniel.
And another man.
I recognized him immediately.
Marcus's father.
"What is this?""
David answered.
"Proof.""
"Proof of what?""
"That Marcus knew about his father's crimes.""
I looked at Marcus.
He didn't deny it.
That hurt more than anything.
"You knew?""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Claire...""
"No.""
My voice shook.
"You knew?""
He looked at me.
"Yes.""
I felt sick.
All these years.
All these conversations.
All those nights when I asked him about his past.
He always told me his childhood was complicated.
He never said why.
"You let me believe you were just a man with a difficult family.""
"I was.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You were a man hiding a family secret.""
David stepped closer.
"Your husband wasn't the innocent victim he told everyone he was.""
Marcus looked angry now.
"Don't.""
"Why?""
David's voice rose.
"Because she might finally see you?""
Marcus moved toward him.
I stepped between them.
"Stop.""
Both men froze.
I looked at Marcus.
"I need the truth.""
He looked broken.
"I was twenty-eight.""
"I don't care.""
"My father controlled everything.""
"I don't care.""
"He threatened me.""
That made me pause.
Marcus continued.
"I wanted out.""
"Then why didn't you leave?""
His eyes filled with shame.
"Because I was scared.""
For the first time, I believed him.
Not because it erased anything.
Not because it fixed anything.
But because I saw something real.
Fear.
"Daniel tried to expose him," Marcus said.
"Yes," David answered.
Marcus looked at the ground.
"Daniel was going to the police.""
"And?""
Marcus swallowed.
"And my father found out.""
Nobody spoke.
The wind moved through the trees.
"What happened that night?"" I asked.
Marcus looked at me.
"I went to the warehouse to stop Daniel.""
My heart sank.
"Stop him how?""
"I wanted him to wait.""
"Did you fight?""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
David's hands tightened around the folder.
"And Daniel fell.""
I waited.
Marcus whispered:
"Yes.""
The word destroyed something inside me.
Not because it answered everything.
Because it didn't.
"Did you push him?""
The question hung in the air.
Marcus looked at me.
And for several seconds...
he couldn't answer.
Then David spoke.
"He doesn't have to.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
David pointed toward the folder.
"Because the evidence does.""
He pulled out a final document.
"A confession.""
Marcus went completely still.
"What confession?""
David looked at him.
"Your father's.""
My blood ran cold.
"What does that mean?""
David looked at me.
"It means Marcus didn't kill Daniel.""
A strange feeling moved through me.
Relief.
Confusion.
Fear.
May you like
Then David finished:
"But he helped cover up who did.""
